the music is great and i love the score, but when we see a musical it has to work as a whole .look at mack and mabel fantastic score but a bad book.i dont mind bare stages and limited props, but it has to compliment the show.and the sets and costumes for the broadway production was a mistake.but love the score
listening to the broadway cast its hard to believe this musical was a flop, until you look at the production photos, then you can only be glad that you didnt pay good money to this load of trash.Such a shame when the cast was so talented.
@mickmikado I go to see musicals to hear the music portrayed live... the music here is great. One of Sonheim's greatest works. I've seen it love a number of times and even the versions with your casts have worked or not because of the belief in the songs and the singing. There is a reason that putting on a Sondheim is often referred to as "Into the Words".
Father is right. DUMB, Mr. Prince. Audiences can't help but be annoyed when teens play adults. Are you listening, all you high schools trying to stage 'Follies'?
Part of what sunk this musical was the decision to cast teenagers. It takes experience and knowing regrets to be able to express the heartbreaking change from dreams to "practical".
im going to see this at city center feb 11th Saw the oringinal in previews- kudos to gary

If I could ever travel back in time for a day, it would be to see this original production.

Did Jason Alexander really have that much hair, or was he already wearing a toupee?

@ITCJon: Yeah, that was his real hair - he was about 22 then.
And even with its problems, MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG was the most interesting musical of that season (one that included DREAMGIRLS and NINE).

Thx for these clear, wonderful pics! I'm wondering is there any video exists (even clips) for the 1994 York Theatre production of Merrily?
