Until the Tang Dynasty, according to both the old and the new Records of the Tang Dynasty, there were both more than 20 names for the "Lao", such as "Nanping Lao, Jiannan Lao, Wuhu Lao, Bazhou Lao, Yizhou Lao, Guizhou Lao" and "Shanlao", etc.
I am not Laotian, so i have a question! I know that Laos and Thailand both have the same languge, same cultrue, same foods,.etc...why don't they unit as a nation even they are next to each other in the map!

I must say, I too, am offended by your question. But, since you don't know our country and people very much, the best way to answer you is because of the same reasons US - Britain, Indonesia - Malaysia, China - Taiwan, and other countries of SIMILAR language keep their own identity.
The problem really is only a political one. If you review the history of Lao and Thailand, you would know that both tried to unify the people at one time or another. Lan Xang almost unified all the kingdoms, Siam managed to take all in a ruthless way but in the end losing back when western colonial powers came in, in all fairness what war isn't ruthless. With each fail attempt comes hatred between the people.
However, some can see pass all that and recognize and love their kin.

โหผมคนอีสานครับ พูดอีสาน เคยมีคนมาว่าให้ว่าผมลาวผมยังโกรธเลย คำว่าลาวถ้าใครมาเรียกถือว่าหยาบคายมากครับ เพราะลาวที่ใช้ในไทย มีความหมายว่า คนชั้นต่ำ ขี้ข้าหรือว่าคนหน้าเหี้ยเท่านั้นครับ พูดง่ายๆคือ ยกตัวอย่างเช่น ไอ้หน้าลาว ก้แปลว่าไอ้หน้าโง่ หน้าเหี้ยก้จะเรียกว่าหน้าลาว อีขี้ข้า เราก้มักจะเรียกว่า ไอ้ลาว ครับ

Thank a million to the Thai government for allowing those opposition political groups to regrouped and organized in their sovereignties during the hard times of colonialism. That's why Laos is now a prosper Laos today and most of us just brush aside about this "particular critically interval event" when Tai's did what it is its own deontology. Going back in history, Han Chinese and Tai (Dai Sipsongpanna) established great relationship. They were a great team (ie warriors, cultivating land, raising crops, raising livestock and farming.)

If you want to go back in history by Royal Family members then Lanna, Kengtung (Shan State), Muang Swa aka Luang Prabang (Lanxang Kingdom) are from Tai Sipsongpanna Royal Family members. Do you know the differences in cities names when you visited those Tai countries?

The problem really is only a political one. If you review the history of Lao and Thailand, you would know that both tried to unify the people at one time or another. Lan Xang almost unified all the kingdoms, Siam managed to take all in a ruthless way but in the end losing back when western colonial powers came in, in all fairness what war isn't ruthless. With each fail attempt comes hatred between the people.
However, some can see pass all that and recognize and love their kin.

According to Dr. Hoang Luong and Wang Guoxiang in their 54 minutes audio they claims that all the Tai of southeast Asia came from the ancient Lao people of Nanping . Their presentation was about Old Lao People being the ancestor of the Kam_Tai language speaking peoples (viz. Zhuang People, Dai People, Lao People, Thai People and etc).

correct, tai meant people or khon in lao. we can call every people with tai: tai german, tai france or tai america. tai is not a name of race as argued by siam. and tai and thai are not the same. tai is meant khon and thai is nationality of present thai people.

This radio broadcast is a propaganda which the Communist regime in China and Vietnam used to divide Tai people. They all know that Tai does not mean people as claimed by some Chinese historian. Of course, this is a conflict since the Chinese HISTORIANS also claimed that Tibet is part of China as well. Go figure.

thai people will claim everything from other. they are not peaceful. i say that to avoid thai people to claim everything to be our lao race. thailand formerly siam used to be a very small country, but they are not peaceful and take land from others. southern from cambodia, and malaysia, nort eastern from lanexang, nortern from myanmar. they will pay for that. as the red shirt demo and southern unrest. this unrest shows that they are different from central thai that take land from other.
