I have seven dogs and we have a similar relationship. This is not training folks. It is a "relationship" between human and dog. Respect your dogs as dogs and they will respect you back as their leader. It is a skill we can all learn...
I'm very curious to know who the 163 people who dislike this are. He has total control of his pack, he never shouts at them, never hits them. They quite obviously adore the man! It makes me even more determined to be as good with my pack as he is with his!
Brilliant. My late wife and I used to be able do that when five dogs when we lived n England. Now I have a refuge in Argentina with fifty dogs and going out with any of them means facing aggressive street dogs so it isn't possible. Great fun to watch though
It is amazing how well trained all of these dogs are, 16 dogs and all of them follow him like he is their mother. Watching as a bystander on a side-walk if you saw so many dogs one would probably be scared, but all of these dogs just move over to the other side. Well done!
This is an amazing bit of training, but I have three caveats: 1) no matter how well-trained, please don't take off-leash dogs near traffic. All it takes is one squirrel and one lapse in attention, and you'll have a dead dog, 2) I'm worried about other lose dogs. If one attacks and a fight breaks out, it'll be his 16 against 1--even if they're in the right. 3) I assume he's not pooper-scooping and that's just rude, if true. That said, I'm jealous and would love to have his lifestyle!
@k9shrink The traffic part, I'm not entirely in agreeance with you about. I trained my dog what the sidewalk (or safe part away from the road) was, and also did repetitive training with a tennis ball, throwing it off the sidewalk until it would get to the point where she would completely ignore the ball if it was in the road. She knows "other side" and will run to the other side of the road, even if I don't switch sides. I think there are exceptions.
When this video started, I was thinking that he was irresponsible to have them all off-leash. I thought there was no way to keep them and other safe. I was wrong. But, his sweet dogs ARE leaving their poopies all over the place. >.<
Reminds me a lot of my father and his three to five working border collies, never used any type of leash except for a pup in training, but they were always at his heel shoulder to shoulder unless they were out under voice or whistle command working the sheep.
I could not believe what I have just seen. That guy should be in teaching . ( I am talking about unruly kids and adults here)..It was such a pleasure to watch. So many dogs having so much fun, but only because they had been disciplined. Surely there are lessons to be learnt from this really great video
This proves once again that it's really a dog's life. These pooches have this man trained very well. Who else would do these things for them? He probably does the shopping and cleaning too. And his only reward is a healthy, long life full of love, loyalty and gratitude. Hey, that's not so bad!! LONG LIVE DOGS!!!
What a fantastic bond these dogs have with their leader! He did not do "alpha rolls" -- the dogs naturally rolled over, for which he petted them. Great life. I want to be a dog in his pack!
This is an amazing video!! I love the pack leader he has obviously mastered in this group of dogs!! He has the dog training that is neede by a lot of people here in the USA. I run a dog park, and I wish everyone had this common sense about owning a dog!! The only big concern I have (I also foster dogs) is that they don't have tags/collars/IDs. Another minor concern is the fact that he didn't pick up the poop =( I need people to learn responisibility here i USA..seeing this can cause problems!
@CountryAyr00 Well it is in Germany and there u only have to pick up the poop in cities and I think that this dogs are "chipped" that is usual for german sport dogs.
I have never seen something so amazing this awesome. A great pack with a awesome pack leader. I can only wish to one day experiences this. Its so great to see lol the dog barking at them wanted to join them so bad lol
What a magnificently well-trained group of hounds! I thought, 9 minutes! But when it was over that was the fastest 9 minutes ever! It is such a pleasure to watch. What a wonderful relationship the man has with his dogs. Great job! It was great to watch them gather into a tight group when needed and spread out when safe. Just WONDERFUL!!! @bloodywaterfishing yes it is in Germany, as u hear the woman frantically calling her dog Flori....and yes we don't have a law that says we have too pick up the poop, except in cities, streets and so on, also there is the possibilty to pass some test with your dogs so u can set them free of the leash in cleared areas
Nicely trained dogs (due to whip in hand, I would suspect, that's how foxhound folks keep their packs in control, in fact the trainer is called "the whipper in"... but people like this end up causing problems for dog owners in general for this reason: should some uncontrolled, untrained dog (owned by an idiot) grab one of his dogs, there is NO way he is going to be able to help his dog, he will be so busy trying to control all the others. If he pawns them off on a sled dog rescue group so he can be the leader of a new pack, I'm stepping off his band wagon. :)

@bonkon9 No matter what the dogs chase: crows, rabbits or deer. They hunt! My dog sits still when I feed crows a meter away and is absolutely quiet in the vicinity of horses or other animals. Without a leash!
@bonkon9 nope, anybody who can train like this is fine, these are not dogs that are going to hurt cows, its their daily run, cows probably used to them.
It's clear this man is putting his dogs at risk. By allowing his dogs to run free, he isn't doing them any favors. Communities have leash laws to protect humans and animals.

There's no such thing as an extention of an arm. A whip is a whip is a whip. What you are viewing on You Tube is a particular time and particular circumstances which aren't constants. The dogs could easily be spooked by cars or animals. Cars could plow into them. Someone on a bike could scare the dogs into running in all directions. Allowing dogs to run free is a horror waiting to happen. That's why there are leash laws!
@HelpSledDogs Its pretty clear you are overreacting. You should spend your time and effort on more pressing and urgent issues surrounding dog welfare. Don't attack one man who obviously has a fantastic relationship w/ his dogs. Sure, there is some risk involved in what he does, but I believe it is worth the risk, b/c these dogs are able to experience FREEDOM, and act out many of their natural urges and instincts. I don't see how its helpful to sled dogs to sit on youtube bitching and trolling.
@HelpSledDogs There are leash laws because the vast majority of owners do not have the masterful level of balance and control that this man clearly has on his animals. If everyone could control their pets like this there would be no need. They show no sign of abuse and all signs of obedience, carefully following all of the subtle cues displayed by their pack leader. I appreciate your stance, but these dogs look like the last ones on the planet that would ever need saving.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I see a man holding a whip when he's interacting with his dogs. Why would he have a whip if he didn't intend to use it. The man doesn't need a whip as "an extention of his arms," since the dogs can see his arms. The free-running sled dogs could easily be hit by cars or be spooked by them, especially if there's honking. If an animal darts out of the woods just when a car was passing, that would be a fiasco.
@HelpSledDogs It is not a whip, it is an extension of his arms.... these are some of the happiest, and best behaved dogs on the planet. And didn't you get the point over and over that there was no darting going on?!? Sheesh.... none so blind as those who WILL NOT SEE.
To you, do these dogs really look like beaten and abused? I see happy, relaxed dogs which have a great relationship with their owner who keeps them fit, works on a relationship with them and does things they enjoy. When you watch the video closely when he reaches the street, you can see that all the dogs look at him for guidance. He holds a long branch as an extention of his arm - the way you hold a lunging-whip when lunging a horse, which you do not use to touch or ever hit the horse.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If the dogs are amazingly well trained, why is the man holding a whip? Even if the dogs are well-trained, they could easily become "spooked" by cars. And, if there's honking, that's even worse. The dogs should be on leashes so they're not hit by cars.
Winter entered mid-distance races,- the Alpen-Trail, 300 kilometers (186 miles)- a huge difference than the 1,000 miles that the Iditarod dogs have to endure.
The Iditarod kills dogs (total known 142) and must stop. Deaths average nearly 4 a year. Half the dogs don’t make it to the finish, due to injury, illness, exhaustion, etc. The distance is too long, and the conditions and terrain too grueling for the dogs. The dogs are kept on a short chain, attached to their small enclosure.
What's the long thin thing he's holding while biking. Is it a whip? Heini puts his dogs in many dangerous situations. For example, the dogs cross a road without being leased. They could easily be hit by cars. (Most jurisdictions have laws requiring people to leash their dogs.)
@HelpSledDogs No, they won't get hit by a car, because they are amazingly well trained, as you can surely see: They watch him all the time, they don't even look at the horse or other dogs they are passing, because they solely concentrate on their "leader". So: Yes, if you have an untrained dog, you better keep it on the leash. That's the entire point of training dogs: The better they're trainied, the more freedom they get.
@HelpSledDogs Let me educate you. I am from Germany, I live in the US and have run my own dog rescue for 8 1/2 years. It is most common in Germany and most European countries, that dogs walk without a leash. None of my dogs have EVER been hit. The only country (and I have traveled) I see a dead dog or cat on a daily basis in the road is the US.

@bonkon9 No matter what the dogs chase: crows, rabbits or deer. They hunt! My dog sits still when I feed crows a meter away and is absolutely quiet in the vicinity of horses or other animals. Without a leash!
22ivj04 2 months ago

HelpSledDogs 3 months ago
@HelpSledDogs Its pretty clear you are overreacting. You should spend your time and effort on more pressing and urgent issues surrounding dog welfare. Don't attack one man who obviously has a fantastic relationship w/ his dogs. Sure, there is some risk involved in what he does, but I believe it is worth the risk, b/c these dogs are able to experience FREEDOM, and act out many of their natural urges and instincts. I don't see how its helpful to sled dogs to sit on youtube bitching and trolling.
MissAmyNicci 3 months ago 13
@HelpSledDogs There are leash laws because the vast majority of owners do not have the masterful level of balance and control that this man clearly has on his animals. If everyone could control their pets like this there would be no need. They show no sign of abuse and all signs of obedience, carefully following all of the subtle cues displayed by their pack leader. I appreciate your stance, but these dogs look like the last ones on the planet that would ever need saving.

HelpSledDogs 3 months ago

HelpSledDogs 4 months ago
@HelpSledDogs No, they won't get hit by a car, because they are amazingly well trained, as you can surely see: They watch him all the time, they don't even look at the horse or other dogs they are passing, because they solely concentrate on their "leader". So: Yes, if you have an untrained dog, you better keep it on the leash. That's the entire point of training dogs: The better they're trainied, the more freedom they get.
lumpi4de 3 months ago 29
@lumpi4de yup, my the more my dogs come as soon as they are called the sooner they get more freedom and they all have it figured out!
