  • This is so awesome, and it sounds really good on the MegaDrive!

  • CONGRATULATIONS to Geckoyamori! Supreme and excellent work!

  • Oh jesus. Thank god this soundtrack was on the SNES. The Genesis was better at making its individual instruments sound distinct but the SNES had such a better orchestration-like quality and less farty sounding music.

  • The bass line on Brinstar 1 reminds me of Revenge of Shinobi :)

  • actually, so does Brinstar 2!

  • I must find a DeLorean and go back in time and buy the Metroid franchise off of Nintendo and sell it to SEGA.

  • Now somebody please port this game to the Genesis.

  • This is amazingly done. I can't really see this music being on a Genesis port of Super Metroid. I hope you do the entire soundtrack.

  • I wish this was a cd.....i would buy it and blast the music that starts on 1:58 as i walk down the street to my nearby dollar store.

  • Could this music be used in a fan-ported Super Metroid game for Sega Genesis or Sega-CD...? :D

  • any chance of having a download of all these songs?

  • Brinstar definitely sounds better on Genesis.

  • I've listened to this about a hundred times, and I still can't stop. You did an amazing job on this redux, kudos for taking one of the best game scores and converting it into my fav game system music style.

  • The SNES chip was definitely ahead of its time, but I love it when people say it had a "sound". It was a fucking glorified sample player which wasn't well endowed with memory. Great developers worked around it and did great things- most notably the best for SNES was stuff like Chrono Trigger, light, orchestral instrumentation sounded very professional on it if done correctly. But the Genesis, it had a real synthesizer on board, and while its limiting to the grand scheme- its capable for sure.

  • What does FM stand for?

  • @StarFoxAutobot Frequency Modulation.

  • @HoleHeadedLiar Is it a program by itself or a type of file?

  • @StarFoxAutobot Frequency Modulation is a type of synthesis, which the Sega Genesis used.

  • @HoleHeadedLiar Did other consoles or developers use FM?

  • @StarFoxAutobot I don't think that any other consoles used Frequency Modulation synthesis; you'd have to google that yourself, the SNES used Digital Signal Processing, and Pulse Code Modulation; both were used in tandem to produce analog sounds from Digital sources.

  • @StarFoxAutobot Only The Sega Saturn and addons for the Famicom also had FM. FM was the most common sound hardware in PCs back in '89 to '95 though.

  • @StarFoxAutobot The Japanese Sega Master System had an optional FM chip add on that was later built into it.

  • Is this VOPM??

  • this sir, is quite impressive. let no one tell you different.

  • You really smoothed out the solo of the synth flute sounds in Brinstar 2, I like it a lot I must say.

  • What are the odds of you releasing a full OST of these songs, Gecko? I'd love to listen to this in my car as individual tracks, not just one medley. Great job, BTW!

  • Ok, the Genesis chip could easily do this, but could it handle a full SM soundtrack of this quality, AND the actual game, all on one Genesis cartrudge? An SM Sega CD game would be more realistic

  • would you be able to e-mail me the samples? I'd love to use these in my chiptunes :D

  • This rules.

  • I was wondering if you could make separate tracks of Super Metroid Genesis instead of a medley?

  • @vicviper99 Yes yes, I'm sure you have much more insight than me on what the YM2612 can do.

  • @vicviper99 didnt the snes use sound samples?

  • @vicviper99 If this were being played back on a model 1 with anything but a VA7 motherboard, this level of sound quality would be totally feasible. If it were being played back on a model 2 with either a VA2, VA2.3, VA3 or VA4 motherboard, it'd be pretty darn close. If it were any other model 2, or was a model 1 with a VA7 motherboard, it'd sound much worse than this. Based on your comment, your experience with the Genesis must be limited to one of the "bad ones." They were not all bad.

  • @vicviper99 Don't know what you're talking about, but.. I think the Genesis/Megadrive could have done this sound easely.. Never played on a Genesis/Megadrive or something..? Some games have horrible music and sound effects, other games sounds awesome. Take Sonic 3 for example. Don't hate on the best 16 bit console ever.

  • @vicviper99 lol Farting synth sounds. I thought the same thing. XD

Well actually, it varies from game to game. Some games have much better sound clarity. Awesome Possum had better voice clarity than some SNES games. Yeah no joke. I even used them in some of my YTPMV's, although the game itself sucks.

  • @vicviper99

so tell me. if it emulates Genesis sound ok, how would it sound like crap on real hardware, despite real hardware would make this sound better, if was coded in .vgm format?

you've put yourself in a contradiction...

  • @vicviper99 Do your reasearch before commenting

  • Both the SNES version and the Genesis covers bring something different; these genesis versions give a robotic tone, which is reminiscent of Samus since her power suit makes her seemingly fearless and unfeeling. The SNES version is more atmospheric and dark, which reflects the dark and formidable Zebes which must be explored. You could argue that the Genesis version reflects how the space pirates have pretty much conquered the planet with their bases. You can't really say that one is better

  • man, red soil brinstar sound fuckin good !

  • I'm sorry but SEGA Genesis never had something as epic as Super Metroid

  • @bitchasshoeism and samus :D

  • Ha! I was gonna say ' this is right on par with that MMX3 remix GeckoYamori made way back.. then I look up and see just that.

Very fine work, I've always prized 16-bit tunes of 8-bit, something about 'em seems more.. fleshy sometimes

  • This is nothing short of incredible.

  • Good job. You're more epic than I ever was.

  • Comment removed

  • Yea but some people might wonder what will it sound like for fun.

  • i think you captured synth farting beautifully

  • jesus, this is well done

  • where can i get these as mp3s - sounds fucking great! nice work.

  • I really think this soundtrack works on the genesis soundchip.

It had a much more hard electronic edge to its sounds. It really goes great with the forboding science fiction atmosphere of the game. It almost makes it more spooky.

Excellent work, though hopefully you should be tired of hearing what a great job you did on this by now.

    Love hearing your re-edits.

  • Blasphemy!!! Metroid is a Nintendo product. NINTENDO!!!

  • Kinda reminds me of the soundtrack for Terminator on the Sega CD.

  • amazinggggggggg :0 :) great job can you do actraisers Fillmore? <3

  • whoa, this came out for genesis??

  • @jekblom123 please, please tell me your a troll...

  • @TheBoxOfAwesome buddy, I'm not a troll. did this really come out for genesis? I didn't think nintendo would give the right to sega to produce it.

  • @jekblom123 my hope for society has just gone down another notch.

  • @TheBoxOfAwesome ... you're sort of strange...

  • @jekblom123 No sir, this never came out on Genesis, Nintendo would've never given one of their major ip's to Sega which at the time was their competition. The music here was programmed in FM synth by the uploader.

  • @PeterSteelePowerINC Thats what I thought. sheesh.

  • The Genesis Brinstar 2 track sounds better than the one on the Super NES.

  • Yeah, you should definitely put these up for download! They sound great!! :D Some of these tracks sound better than the SNES!

  • Comment removed

  • holy shit thats some sexy music.

  • Whoa, I want this to be real! o.o

  • Doesnt have that Metroid feel. lol.

  • @ageshero your mom has that metroid feel,. Oh yeah.

  • you should put these up. i wanna download them soooo bad.

  • Where'd you get that awesome picture of Ridley?

  • @GregzillaGT I think it was on the cover of the original game box.

  • the last of the menicing metroids are in captivity.... the galaxy is saved! thank you samsu aran!

  • ~wow thats great very very good

  • Did you use the original soundtrack or is this your rendition?

  • Did you port the original soundtrack or completely re-make it. Or did you use the Genesis sound chip of something else.

  • what soundfont you use for make this?

  • @1300l I don't use soundfonts, I program the sounds myself.

  • @geckoyamori Amazing job you did/do. Congratlations!

  • @geckoyamori ...in what?

  • @geckoyamori How do you program the sound?

Are using a notepad then compilate the code with an emulator or anything else =o

  • @geckoyamori Somebody obviously doesn't know who you are and what you do. ^.^

  • @geckoyamori Good lord...

  • SNES vaersions are much better!

  • I favor the SNES' music because I like the way it sounds better.

  • wonderful

  • Comparing the sound hardware of the Genesis and the SNES is like comparing apples to oranges. One is a sampling chip, while the other combined an FM synth and a PSG. While the SNES allowed for a more realistic, orchestral sound; the Genesis allowed for a more dynamic one, plus it's better to consider it a musical instrument in it's own right.

  • @Desmaad

So what you're saying is that one produces midi sounds and the other is an actual sound chip. Cool story bro.

  • @Ortheos2006 No, the SNES didn't do MIDI sounds. I imagine most composers used a tracker-like program. The samples were probably 8-bit, for space and technical reasons.

  • I grew up listening to the SNES music, and the genesis music actually sounds pretty good. It sounds good on both consoles. I kinda like the Genesis' unique sound, the music reminds me of early 90's PC games.

  • U can tell how the Snes was abit more powerful than sega, even in the sound card, but still sounds cool on Genesis :)

  • @RaikenXion It isn't on the genesis. Also I'm disappointed to know that people still don't understand that the Genesis is more powerful than the SNES. ESPECIALLY the sound chip. Remember folks, Synthesis > Midi.

  • @XBladenoJutsu I guess "Laugh out Loud" didnt hint enough, and maybe I shud hav put in Genesis style or rephrased it better. The Genesis maybe more powerful but Its just the Snes always seemed more popular, lol. Y do I feel we're gonna start arguing lol.

  • @RaikenXion My bad dood. It's kinda one of those things that tick me off. People just assume the SNES is better because it uses more realistic sounding instruments instead of taking the time to observe both consoles carefully and listen to the sound each of them produce closely. It should be blatent to them that the Genesis is superior by now, instead of assume the SNES is better. They should be saying something like this instead. "I favor the SNES' music because I like the way it sounds better"

  • I never knew this was on Genesis!! lol

  • All AWESOME but I like the ending the best!

  • This actually sounds creepier than the original

  • The Genesis sound chip sounded pretty good, very arcade-like. SNES was a whole different thing, almost like a MIDI player.

  • That soundcard doesn't serve Super Metroid justice.

  • @Thunderchin I've said this before, and I'll say it again: FM in the right hands is amazing. The Genesis soundchip has a nasty reputation because it was obnoxiously difficult to program for, not because FM synthesis is a bad way to produce sounds. FM could produce clearer tones than sampling, because of memory limitations. Both were very imperfect ways of producing sound, it's just that it's infinitely easier to make something sound good on the SNES than it is on the Genesis/Mega Drive.

  • @Thunderchin @Thunderchin Holy hell, if you can seriously say that, then you mustn't have listened to the video... or juat have bad hearing. Sounds better than SNES because with FM synth you get really great ambiant sounds, which is what Super Metroid's music is in it's entirety.

  • @XBladenoJutsu That's something that this soundcard is good for, and I like this arrangement of the soundtrack. However, Super Metroid is a good game but the soundcard isn't. That was the intent of the original comment. I like the music that the card can generate but I HATE THE SOUNDCARD I AND WILL DIE BEFORE I HAVE ONE IN MY HOUSE. Who came up with the piece of shit called the FM synth anyway? (Call me a reverse fanboy if you will, but my opinion stays.)

  • @Thunderchin I'd hate to say this, but you pretty much contradicted yourself there. You like it, yet you hate it and would never want it in your home, and question the people who came up with Frequency Modulation? That, my friend, is called being a troll. What you said there, makes no sense at all.

  • The guy who made the music for the Sonic the Hedgehog titles on the Mega Drive must've been both a musical and technical genius; the Mega Drive sound card is among one of the worst 16-bit sound cards to work with.

  • @DanielL5583 It helps that one of the composers for Sonic 2 and (I think) 3 was Michael Jackson. Don't believe me? Google it.

  • @cernex No need to Google it; I know he was one of the composers, but he wasn't accredited in the credits roll.

  • @DanielL5583 *sigh* Do your research, dude.... It's not that the genesis is bad... The SNES is the one who is exceptionally good! Seriously, look up OPL3 chip (old soundblaster PC's)... Atari ST music... PC engine/Turbografx 16 music (without CD)

In the 90's everything was FM synth, up until SNES and Gravis ultrasound (and i believe amiga soundchips too, but i'm not sure) came along and brought in the wavetable...

  • @Terryracoon I didn't say the Mega Drive was a bad console; it's just that it's not got a great sound card.

  • @DanielL5583 And my response was simply explaining: The genesis soundchip was awesome for it's time (everything was FM synth back then, opl3, atari ST, and PC engine all had a similar sound to them) The SNES was the one to come and replace FM synth with samples and wavetables....

  • @Terryracoon ...which improved the quality of the sound and paved the way for improved sound cards, 16-bit and above, just like the NES made 8-bit sounds highly enjoyable.

  • The latht Metroid ith in captivity. The galkthy ith at peath <3

  • This sounds surprisingly badass.

  • @TheDevilbuster FM in the right hands is an amazing tool. I honestly could listen to Brinstar Jungle Floor in FM (the song that starts at 1:57) all day.

  • @MathUDX Listen to the remix of MegaMan X3's opening stage made by geckoyamori as well or any Streets of Rage 1/2 song. For the right kind of music the Genesis' sound card was kick ass.

  • @MathUDX

Only the best video game music composers can make great music with the megadrive sound card its not easy to do.

  • The original SNES version is and will always be the best soundtrack.

  • Any chance there might be an MP3 set of these in the future?

  • haha Brinstar 1 at 01:59 sounds like all the music I like now!

I still hum that song :)

  • How did you get that grainy filter over the box art?

  • Wow. Spore Spawn's theme is scary with this soundchip...

  • Someone should mod the original with Sega Genesis hardware, sound etc. Would be kick ass.

  • @CapricornGenesis Indeed! I would kill for a Sega Genesis version if this was the ost, heck had it existed- I would've bought both SNES and SEGA versions.

  • And that's exactly how you take advantages of that sound chip. Only a few developers in Genesis days knew that.

  • I LOVE the brinstar theme on this gj man

  • 4:15

And I always knew this song would sound just as creepy on the Sega Genesis. I swear, you play Brinstar 2 with Splatterhouse.

And this is an amazing job you've put together. Right on! ^w^

  • very cool to hear the music on a different palette. Some of it actually sounds almost better!

  • This vid is very interesting!

  • The ending theme sounds really good with this soundchip!

  • Epic YM2612 arrangements for Super Metroid :D

  • This is pretty impressive, it really does make one wonder what Super Metroid would have been like on the Genesis. It's nicely done too, retains some of the eerie value of the original composition, with some of the other unique touches of the hardware.

  • somehow I think a combination of DACs and several ym2612s would be the greatest thing ever for a metroid game

  • The Megadrive was a good all-rounder, and was released 2 years before the SNES. So yes, Nintendo was in a position to produce better hardware.

Shame Sega didn't hire Yuzo Koshiro and make a similar adventure game for their customers. If there is a Metroid-like game for the Megadrive - let me know!

  • @SamusDrake

    >>Metroid-like game for the Megadrive

Phantom 2040. Granted,it also came out on the SNES,but I grew up on the Genesis version.

  • @NucleaRaptor

That might just fit the bill! Cheers matey! ^_^

  • flats, flats and more flats

  • @TETTSUUO Aside from colors and transparencies there's nothing Super Metroid really does that's beyond the limits of the Genesis.

And this isn't really pretending it was on the Genesis, it's just a fan interpretation of how the music might be done on the Genesis.

  • @TETTSUUO you're gayfat

  • @TETTSUUO your a gay fat....or gay fish

  • @TETTSUUO

lol reality check the war between nintendo and sega is dead only fatass losers still whine about this topic.

there should be a new name for all fanboys who rage on other games or systems..... hmmm.... "NaziGeeks!" anyone like it or someone can do better than this..... I've got another one "Shitheads"

  • Two people don't know shit about video games!

  • Awesome! Can you remake Lower Norfair's music like this too?

  • great job! Its really amusing recognize the Genesis samples and the games where they were used!

And SUper Metroid is such a great game! Too bad its just could never been released to Genesis.

  • The bit at 1:10 is so fucking trippy with headphones.

  • Sigh, this video turned into an old console war from the early 90's, grow up!

Both consoles had their share of crappy music while having games that had the best music. Each system was made with a completely different sound chip so it's not like you can get the same result for both. Streets of Rage took advantage of the Sega sound chip where Metroid did the same with the SNES.

Both systems have their pro and cons and some games where made with the exclusive console chip in mind. Let it go, lol

  • Wow this is epic. Megadrive sounded so "electronic" at times.

  • genesis could never produce sounds like this, its just too complex for the system to produce.

  • You obviously have no idea what you're talking about. There are many games that have music that has the same coarse "bubbly" sound to it.

  • @rahnyc4

Untrue. Go listen to the music from Biohazard Battle or Phantasy Star IV. The complexity of the music is all in the composition.

  • THE LAST METROID IS IN CAPTIVITY.

    THE GALAXY IS AT PEACE.

  • Genesis has crappier sound than SNES although this does sound much creepier

  • @Willy24B What's the matter? Don't like FM sound chips?

  • @Willy24B You wouldn't be able to have anything as great as Streets of Rage music on the SNES. The Mega Drive had a better sound chip. The SNES just sounds like a brass band most of the time.

  • @jacksprat1990 Mega Drive/Genesis had a different sound chip, and was an entirely different console. You couldn't have the Chrono Trigger and FF III soundtracks on the Mega Drive, and you couldn't have the Sonic and Streets of Rage soundtracks on the SNES.

  • @sabombardonist quick the fanboyism and go get laid

  • I love how the orchestration sounds like a rusty trombone.

  • all i care about is if brinstar 2 doesn't sound like shit and you sir have accomplished this

  • Neat!

  • everything sounds better on a genesis :)

  • @muttstuffle not Spider Man & X Men - Arcade's revenge

  • Requesting Lower Norfair.

  • Holy Crap! The jungle Brinstar theme has never sounded so good on the Megadrive soundchip, hell, all of those themes sound fantastic on a YM2612.

  • The MD chip YM2612 is a deadly and perfect weapon in wise hands! Thats why, even loving lots of SNES music i still prefer the MD sound

  • Man, I was hoping to hear the lower Maridia theme. Still very good and very authentic sounding!

  • 0:00 - Title Theme

    1:09 - Intro Theme

    1:57 - Brinstar

    3:50 - Item Room

    4:15 - Brinstar 2

6:11 - Plant Boss (Spore Spawn)

    6:48 - Ending

  • Sounds better to me. Maybe I just like how the Genesis songs are very unabashedly retro sounding in the most badass ways.
