I will defend the right of any UK Overseas Territory to remain a part of the UK as long as a majority of the inhabitants of that Territory desire it. What the Chagos Islanders have had to endure is criminal and the lack of commitment on behalf of the UK Government to stop this criminal act is reprehensible.

@flosssock The official OK policy regarding overseas territories is that "they are British as long as they wish to remain British". So, in principle, if the Chagossians said they no longer wish to be British, the UK would be obliged to grant them independence. That won't happen, because America wants the archipelago for itself, and so the UK abuses the Chagossians on their behalf. Ideally, I would like to see the islands as a devolved region of the UK, like Scotland, with full UK and EU rights.

Sad to say but these people have little to no chance of ever getting their home back.

The Irish have been trying for 800 years and we still have the English aristocracy ruling 1/5th of our island.

What does it say of a society when militarism trumps human rights, justice & decency? If the chagossians are let back to the islands they will fish the surrounding area untill there is nothing left destroying the ecosystems and choral reef. They will tear down the trees to build houses and once there is nothing left they will demand another place to live. The chagos islands are a rear habitat in which nature can flourish not being destroyed by humans and I believe it should be left that way.

The UK government is undermining it's own respectability, and it's suposed respect of human rights. The bottom line is that the UK, without a constitution and with the parliamentary supremecy, combined with British public ignorance and apathy, is in danger of reaffirming its place as just another selfish, racist, western bully. The final ruling in this case smacks of government interference, and brings into question the independance of the judiciary.

if there from a british teritory then they should have british rights, that means not being kept out of thier homes to aplese some foriniers from north america and not having to live in some slum.The UK should keep the island but develop it in the same way as a english village, ginging the locals the ability to live at home,well off but still keep military baces there.
