  • somebody on a forum posted this video link. I love what he says in the beginning, It really answers a lot of questions about music for me.

  • great teach by baremboim, the second after Claudio Arrau

  • 3:00

"Do you think... do you think of that chord in..in..in..in..as one instrument..as..errr..."

Barenboim is an amazing pianist, no doubt about it. He is a bit crazy though.

  • @Udders666 C'mon He's not crazy, he just didn't know the right way to say what he was thinking. Don't judge.

  • I know from a pianist that studied with Arcadi Volodos that Volodos could play all the Beethoven sonatas by ear!!! He remebered them just by listening and he can play all of them without ever having seen the score. Now that's impressive!

  • There is something magical about the piano, wouldn't you agree? Out of all the instruments, it is the most inviting for a young person to play, because all you have to do is press buttons to get sound, and everyone knows how much kids loves pressing buttons... As a child I went to sunday school at chruch and there was the nicest concert grand steinway. I would always find myself sitting at it, mostly just looking and feeling, pressing random notes. I was fascinated, still am, and always will be

  • Thank you so much for this wonderfull video.

  • Barenboim is pretty much the best for Beethoven music everrrrrrrrr :D

  • Chillex with them arguments, why cant we all just learn from everyone. No matter how good u are, there's alot that u still can learn. Peace

  • why does baremboim's piano sound brighter

  • Barenboim is kind. LL 's approach here, as in all of his performances, is elementary.

I would like not to believe that LL is not the future of classical music; unfortunately, his backers put him in highly visible positions to which young artists aspire. Tasteless.

  • Weird seeing Lang being the pupil in a master class when I've watched videos of him giving them! Lang Lang is an exceptional pianist, haters gonna hate.

  • Lang Lang sucks. This is very basic stuff Barenboim is discussing with him. Barenboim is too polite to point out that LL plays the rhythm of the opening bars wrong. LL bangs away on the easier show pieces and plays as flashy as possible but I never find him ever playing any truly difficult pieces like Balakirev Islamey, Prokofiev g minor cto or some tricky double note pieces because he can't waffle and bullshit his audience. Any shit for brains can play Hungarian Rhapsodies fast and loud.

  • @jdbrown371 I think Barenboim is just a poseur.

  • @CaramelMarshmallow

    Позер, скорее всего, Ты!)

  • @MyEli84 Я не столь же претенциозен как он

  • @CaramelMarshmallow

Напевно,він має на це моральне право!)

  • @MyEli84 Come again?

  • @jdbrown371 I mean seriously, what sort of pseudo-philosophical bullshit is this?

"Music, absolute music, only expresses itself through sound."

    Well, no shit.

That's like saying you have to have eyes to look at paintings.

  • @CaramelMarshmallow So you have no objection to my pointing out how LL is one of the biggest assholes ever to play piano. He's not an asshole so long as he's not playing. Regarding Barenboim, he's a very intelligent musician, top notch but English is NOT his native language. The point he made in his book was that music is pure sound and for that reason one cannot expect the musical score to tell everything. Good point. Music is a foreign language to LL. He can't read between the notes.

  • @jdbrown371 I think Lang Lang is a showy, superficial musician, and he doesn't have the emotion depth of other pianists. However, I don't think he comes across as wanting you to think he does.

  • @CaramelMarshmallow In order to be a truly bad pianist, you need to have some talent or even a lot of talent to be bad. I can't rail against an inexperienced teenager taking lessons and you can't fault people for being beginners or of low skill. Some lower skilled pianists can be truly musical at times within their level of competence. In order to be horrible, truly horrible you need a high enough level of piano skills to make the absolute lack of musicianship apparent. LL fits the bill.

  • @jdbrown371 Good point.

  • 4:16 people don't seem to understand

  • Lang lang play 10 sec. Well wait a minute! stop! lol

  • I'm sure Barenboim would like to have Lang Lang's technique. I'm equally sure Lang Lang would like to have one percent of Barenboim's musicality.

  • @billbear99 I understand your point billbear... and I agree in principle. Barenboim has a natural instinct and an immaculate taste for how exactly to phrase but his technique is clearly less impressive than Lang Lang's. But since this video was made Lang Lang has matured and we can see in the video that he learns very fast. His superior technique enables him to focus more on understanding the works he's playing instead of mastering the technical difficulties. He seems to have enough sensibility.

  • To be honest, in my opinion Lang Lang is a greater pianist than Barenboim. I heard some Beethoven sonatas from Barenboim which were totally uninspired and without any individual style... Barenboim is good, but overestimated. Lang Lang on the other hand is very special and isn´t scared to show his expression. Lang Lang is already one of the great, great pianists, and still has lots to offer in the future.

  • @hessu3 I have beethoven sonatas played by Barenboim. He plays them too clinically, not enough passion. Lang Lang is more natural in his approach and more passionate but he doesn't have the same profound understanding of the works as Barenboim has. Also, when a pianist is playing a piece he should not put too much of himself into the performance, it's equally bad to get too much from the pianist as it is to get not enough from him. So, individual style is not the issue - musical synthesis is.

  • @dukeleopard: thanks for the answer! I prefer individual style, and to my point of view, the artist may not only, but should put his very own expression into the piece, even if it might be different from what the composer idea was. Thats what makes music living and every piece once again changing all over the years. But i agree to you, that a profound understanding of the work and a continuing struggle is necessary, and on that basic, an individual idea. Lang Lang has it :)

  • I am sorry I don't know much about piano...but I feel when they touch the keyboard, the sounds are different....why?

  • to watch a master get a masterclass from a master.. Barenboim seems all that more further away from me now... !

  • I have an impression that Beethoven didn't even thought about all that Barenboim said. A bit too dialectic, too much I. Kant...Lang Lang of course gets everything as usual

  • mishio nishihara toro? XD

  • Not Barenboim discusses the work with Lang Lang, but Barenboim TEACH Lang Lang!

  • Barenboim wishes he had Lang Langs technique.

  • @Theonedue i'm sorry to say this but....he doesn't need lol

  • How inspiring!

  • A Jew and an Asian talking about european music and making loads of money from playing european music... What happened to the white man?

  • @Solar Jake, um Mozart was playing Mozart at 3

  • @1ddbb1 Exactly; Mozart was inspired by a 3 year old.

  • @SolarJakee no doubt Communism did not screw you... you should be banned from earth!

  • @1ddbb1 woah there..

  • Tom an Yerry or how ever is written was his first influence, for the love of my big dick!! while the greatest pianists were influenced by observing other at least pianist, this lang lang is a JOKE!

  • @1ddbb1 He did start learning piano when he was about 4.

  • Two fifth raters.

  • fascinating!!! absolutely! ...and Lang Lang has but a fantastic voice too! Great Barenboim, what a musical and artistic sensitivity.

  • Barenboim is the biggest musical genius in the at the moment.

  • Barenboim still the best at this time. Master teaching the future master.

    Future Daniel or Arthur

  • is this before lang lang was famous?

  • hehe people in the audience looked confused

  • Comment removed

  • what I also see in this video is that there is a chinese pianoplayer and an israelian piano player both speaking ENGLISH, and it works very well

  • Which piece are they playing?

  • @Bassini007

I think the Appasionata by Beethoven

  • Lang Lang is much better than Barenboim.

  • @vkb1272

yes, Barenboim has clumsy fingers. But i love his huge knowledge.

    greetings from Barenboim City

  • @vkb1272 Lang Lang = Daniel Barenboim

  • 2.00 hahahaha "ththth that höhöh was höhö hehe realyfunny he " :D:D:D

  • Oh why did PBS have to stop broadcastings programs like this on television? :(

  • It may be of interest to some to know that Barenboim was a protege of Rubinstein. R gave B advice when B was still a child & later became a good friend. Rubinstein advised B's parents and warned them against too early a career. The value of Mentoring in music is a long tradition going back centuries. Rubinstein instructed Sol Hurok to take B to America. B says R "basically negotiated my contract "& started me off in my career. The music is the thing -not the antics - Listen to the music.

  • Jjaja Bareimboim , en la parte mas dificil no te queda mas tiempo para explicarsela jaja que grande!

  • wow for anyone practicing this piece, this is priceless

  • This video is a great source of inspiration.

  • This shows how humble Lang Lang is, he is more of a superstar than Barenboim, but he is willing to take direction and learn new things.

  • this program is so funny! these guys realize that they didn´t know how to play the pieces properly! ja ja ja! daniel is freaky genius

  • This is a heavily cut video form the originally recorded masterclass.

It omits a good 10 minues in the middle

  • Lang Lang is a great musician and getting better all the time. He has no ego - watch him here. He is also very modest and spends a lot of time helping young musicians.

  • i dislike lang lang.

  • @padsax1 then dont watch it. Pretty simple

  • lol, turn on the captions they ARE FUNNY!

Baremboim talks about clinton and the russians!!

  • I like lang Lang performance much better Barenboim.

He plays with allot of feeling not that much like barenboim with technique. Please, listen, you will see what I am saing.

  • @AKhajavi Oh please give me a break...I hate his feelings, he always has to show them (off) and that's what I can't stand. You have to hide something like nature that hides its roots, sorry for being so pathetically poetic, but Lang Lang really annoys me with his ever-smiling-overwhelmed-with-astonishment-face!!!!! And for my dearest beautiful Daniel....he's such a superior musical intelligence, of enormous freshness, eloquence, wit...what is he doing in the same room with this boring old man??!

  • Why is he playing this so stiff and dry?

  • Barenboim is the master of piano understandment! He understanding what he says to play on the piano! No one else know the piano more then how he says it is! He is the best at piano talking ever! And a good piano player to! He is the best ever ever and will always be forever ever! And anyone who doesn't agree i hope they die of that African disease that was the guest on Oprah show! You know the one that makes you barf out your ass and shit out your mouth at the same time! No offense!

  • This is very touching for me to watch. The old master has so much to share. The young master is so humble and receptive . . .

  • What piece are they playing? The book says Beethoven, but I have no idea which Beethoven piece it is.

  • @ctrainyu Its Beethovens Apassionata Movement No.1 . Check it out , its really beautiful.

  • Tom and Jerry FTW!!!

  • 172085

  • I love this video amazing...tnx for the post

  • Master classes of a Genius to a great disciple

  • Very insightful comments by Baremboim, and good playing by Lang Lang.

  • just wonderful

  • Anyone could probably learn to play the sheet music, but to reach further than the notes..to really make it sensual and warm and surprising you have to be as big as these masters..

  • that's why all these masters like to teach langlang so much..... And thanks for sharing

  • Comment removed

  • @3screamingkids:

haha xD yeah, it's right ^^

  • At 9:30: You know you're something when Daniel Barenboim is turning your page for you.

  • @3screamingkids :o) Really!

  • @3screamingkids Although I can't stand Lang Lang..I don't know why. MAybe just his humour.

  • @3screamingkids Dont get excited mate, all the teachers do that for you...

  • He's absolutely right. In my opinion, once science explains impossible secrets in a rational way, it becomes unnecessary.

  • thanks for sharing

  • Thanks a lot for sharing!

  • Music is fascinating!

  • Thank you so much for posting this masterclass! So much insight here. Barenboim really teaches how to think so broadly and sophisticatedly of music. Great job both Barenboim and Lang Lang.

  • at 2:48 if Barenboim looked at me like that before i started to play something i would shit myself!

  • lmao

  • @nojstradamus hhahaahh SO true...

  • If you hate Lang Lang so bad, why bother watching his videos and then writing comments? Go watch some other pianists. As simple as that!

  • @maxhansendk You are a disgrace. You should not be on YouTube caliing everyone idiots. Well, fuck you, and good bye.

  • Even, many technical opinions are only taste of each one in the background...

Be careful of hide your ego behind "technical" or "academic" opinions.

English is not my nature language.

  • The most of us dont have the ear trained enough to take opinion between those two.

I learnt from Glenn Gould, there are two criterias: Aesthetic and techical....aesthetical criteria is a waist of time and energy...we must respect all opinions and have mind open enough to understand what we believe is "bad" "mistaked" or "ugly"

  • Maybe they are deeply agree but they need to show a good class, and a counter opinions are important to understand.

Good job from Lang lang and Borenboim.

I would like see free tutorial videos from Herbie Hancock....Earl Hines did it.

  • The important thing is not who has the last word. The important thing to a student is see the class, the discussion between a good pianist and a good professor.

It must be enough, to learn from this class or academical chat. But If one wants to play like lang lang or Borenboim..then waist the time, cause music is inside every one.

  • Fun video. Barenboim is right -- lay off the over-use of rubato. :)

  • whats with all the hate for lang lang you people are ridiculous its like a few people say some bad things then all of you just ride the bandwagon i hate jealous non professionals who havent even been accepted to a conservatory(yes, i have) and they think they can judge people. i want to see lang lang perform this sonata i think he would bring alot of energy to it. it seem to be one of those that give you room for interpretation, you can release anger and pain in movt 1.

    go lang lang

  • Thanks, anonymous. People are very cutting and unkind on some of these forums. I don't think you have to be accepted for a conversatory to have an opinion. However, to my mind, anyone who thinks Lang Lang is not talented could have a suspect viewpoint. I also do not see the point of being negative about people. Lang Lang seems a nice guy and does not deserve this criticism.

  • barenboim is very articulate....

  • but not arrogant as ur commentery!!!

  • With 1.5 billions of chinese no wonder he got some job! But he is a true joke without the chinese sponsoring and money! Lang lang has no class and no soul to be a great pianist such as brendel. The touch of class you can't buy it with money and propaganda!

  • " You make your life unnecessarily difficult ..."

    So right :-)))

    at 5:04

  • Funny enough, Lang Lang's playing reflects quite well the fact that his inspiration for the piano derived from a Tom and Jerry cartoon. Lang Lang - in line with some others, of course - really intoxicates the classical music market. Looking back at giants such as Josef Hofmann or Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli one must realize that since those days every single generation has got some steps further away from the truly great art of the piano.

  • This is a very interesting and even inspiring document, indeed! By the way: Lang Lang is by far the worst prepared participant of this masterclass. Almost any other piano student with at least some talent and some work would have reached a higher level of interpretation before consulting Barenboim.

  • Thankyou wery much for sharing this.

  • Every milisecond of this video is valuable!!!

    Thanks for sharing!!!

  • Vaya lujo!! Lo pone a caldo, pero qué lujo de clase. Barenboim es un maestro de los grandes. Se nota la sabiduría de director de orquesta. QUé profundidad de comentarios. Espectacular!!

  • lokopiano is a loco sob

  • 08/07 from 18-30(CET) at Mezzo!!!

  • Barenboim is a genius. Like with most masterclasses, the master must get frustrated with the pupils. Sometimes they just don't get it.

  • lokopiano, WE WILL KILL YOU. childish agenteenager.

  • Ay fooo.........i will kill you...........

Shut up and go to your gay party.........with a dildo prepared with tabasco sauce

  • LOOOOOOOOLL------>l o k o...you are going to get somewhat special...hehe

  • but nonetheless i have to notice that mr.?? barenboim is getting more and more an ugly fat matrone!!

  • HAHAHahahaha.

  • @berlinzerberus Huh?

  • nice play, i like the maestro, he is cool also the other guy's pretty cool too, goooooo keep it up

  • hehe... LOLL----->right right!

  • does anyone know where I can get more knowledge of what mr. Barenboim is talking about in the beginning?

  • The truth is that he's just being a pretentious twat. That's what musical analysis is about, just coming out with cringeworthy and pretentious comments, like those. I'm doing a music degree, so i'm qualified to say this.

  • i think he overwhelmes lanlang with information, but what he says is good, just too much to understand. but maybe langlang is fast enough:-)

  • sorry but i don't understand what you are saying

  • you spelt effeminate worng

  • So in this case much better i say : GAY.

    lokopiano

  • Barenboim ftw!!! Take that Lang Lang!

  • I'm impressed with Barenboim the teacher in this video clip. He has some very insightful comments on the Beethoven (he recorded all of the sonatas). However, I never cared much for him as a performer or conductor.

  • Comment removed

  • Masterclasses are a little absurd things: a "professor", convincing you that HIS interpretation is the best and the right one, no matter if the "pupil" is Rubinstein or Arrau or Kissin or Lang Lang or Liszt himself, the "professor" always HAS TO CHANGE something of your playing. I have never attended a masterclass where the "pupil" played and the "professor" said "ok, that's perfect!", even if the "pupil" played that same piece 1000 times in every country for thousands people...

  • The problem with Baremboim is his tipically Bla bla bla. Sometimes some interesting things, but mostly subjetive.

And what is the meaning of this circus masterclass with the bla bla bla and the cheetta pisnist? Just pure publicity.

For the young to promote a litlle more his busiines , and for te old to have his circle of influences...........

    lokopiano

  • You are both so far off it isn't funny. If either of you even understood what it is to be a teacher or to be a virtuoso, then you would both cut your tounges off lest the ghost of Franz Liszt do it himself.

  • The virtuoso 108 year old from Argentina that writes like a child? Intresting.

  • nO...NO......my dear i am not 108 ....but 107 . Your mom have 108.

And i am not from Argentina ........so you are one more of the imbecils medium brained.

  • Is this your version of a debate? I told you, you're nothing but a frustrated bastard. FRUSTRATED POOR OLD BASTARD!

You're capable of criticize anybody if you may insult someone. I'm sure is just matter of time to find a bad comment about Arrau, Serkin, Rachmaninoff or Rubistein. You're a lost case. YOU'RE NOTHING, NOTHING, NOTHING!!!! You're a poor child who attacks someone's mother when someone tells you the truth. Poor guy.

  • Ayyy...foooooo Nothing , nothing....nothing.... you look very gay......

Arrau was a great musician more than a pianist. he has extremely wonderful recordings, but some of them are just no beautiful for me. Technically he was emphiric, despite he tought the contrary. Serkin was a very good from the technicakl side, but ugly sound, ugly body language...he used to "Eat" each note he stroke....a kind of "Tourette syndrome", and when he rised his arms as a monkey , he looks like cheetta.

    Next

  • wow, if u're a virtuoso, i want to see that .

don't juge by yourself, POST !

  • i don't care for the nickname i want the name of the video . What do you care, you gotta hide your face on the video .

There's a video of me walking on water, but sorry i can't post , i have to preserve my identity ..

    LOOOOOOOLL !!!!! dead loss xD

  • never a barenboim asskisser !! :(

    that's worse you think you're God !

No one believes you so stop the comedy

  • don't be so jealous child.

  • ahh get a life

who said that...i guess you think about alot of gay stuff which proves that you are gay

  • Im sorry dude

    hope you get some friend:)
