  • Very attractive song

  • random comment to get this video more attention

  • I only wish this song was an hour long.

  • Essa música me leva para longe de mim mesma. Simplesmente perfeita!

  • HELLO CAN YOU BUY THIS SONG AS A SINGLE??

  • shepard tone is amazing to listen to

  • have listened to nothing but this song for days

  • I HATE HOW ALL OF THESE SONGS HAVE SUCH OLD COMMENTS AND NO NEW ONES.

    WE MUST REVIVE THEM.

  • Wow this is amazing, seriously its my new favorite song!!!!

  • He was the artist. He wasn't using Pro Tools, the engineer was. It's a great song considering the time restraint.

  • @Watermark0n

I don't agree. Magnetic Fields were VERY indie throughout the first few albums. In

fact, quintessential dreampop. Even 4AD tried to sign them. As Stephin's sound became more sophisticated, maybe after the Sixths, maybe it became more of an "art" band than an indie band, whatever that means. I mean that they are on the same label than Laurie Anderson, that's what I mean.

  • Raw unimpeded lyrical brilliance.

  • this song is too impossible to download. please someone help towards making it available thankssss

  • @rayolacer try video2mp3 . net or something similar.

  • AWSOME SONG . I LOVE STEPHIN MERRITT . THANK YOU FOR THE UPLOAD . THANK YOU AGAIN !

  • It's odd how limited the appeal of The Magnetic Fields are. It seems like those who are in to pop don't like them because they are idiosyncratic whereas many rock people can't get in to them because they follow a more traditional pop song structure. They need more fans!!!

  • this one did funcking break through the veil...for me....dough boy shifts a big one...thx S.M.

  • This is amazing to see him doing something he does best. It's so catchy, does anyone have the MP3?

  • it is available on itunes! It was my first ever purchase. They also have a version of the nun's litany with merritt singing!

  • Having this video on loop in the background was the sole reason I finished my final history paper last year. Thx, Merritt; thx, NPR.

  • just did the same with a shakespeare final. ha

  • I come back to this...I hear it in my days now..thanx..I think...

  • coprophagous spelling not withstanding...

  • vaguely uinque....as in open endedly beatiful....

  • Amazing!

  • What's that software he's using?

  • Looks like ProTools... just like the rest of the music industry.

  • 'tis Pro Tools. But a lot of the industry's starting to use Logic Pro now it's... y'know, vaguely usable :D

  • @danielbrann

Stephin Merrit was only ever vaguely associated with the indie scene. I guess the indie scene only really ever took him in because of the musical diversity in it. But Merrit has always really been different. He proudly embraces unoriginality and formalism, but he does so in a very beautiful, ironically original way. I don't fault him for using protools; I wish the rest of the music industry could learn from his beautiful use of it.

  • i want to fuck this song

  • No one like Merritt. Absolute original. He stands alone.

  • If Merritt stands alone, then Terry Scott Taylor is all alone in his own dimension

  • Stephin Merritt is amazing.

  • Yes he is

  • What is meant by "1974" musically speaking?

  • I think it's something to do with the intervals he's using, though I could be wrong about that. Like the 1 is the first degree of the scale and 9 is a ninth of some kind above it. Either that or it's something a bit simpler like just the number of semitones between the notes in that little bit, if I'm wrong someone please correct me!

  • yes, something like that...

  • when npr asked him to write a song they showed him some pics and phrases. he picked a photo of a man covered in baby dolls (hence the name 'man of a million faces') and he picked the phrase 1974

  • You're right, he's referring to scale degrees or intervals. The first, ninth (which is the same as a 2nd), seventh, and fourth notes of a scale.

  • Make sure you watch the NPR link that Strangeaway put in the box up there. It's great!

    Good song :-)

  • wow, this is so so epic.

  • seeing magnetic fields in munich on july 4! what better way to celebrate the independence of my country?

  • I'm going to see Stephin and his Fields in just over two weeks!! I cannot wait!!!

  • where are they playing in two weeks?

  • In Chelsea.

  • one of his best songs ever! and a great video! does anybody know of an album with this song going on it, or already on it? Merritt's a Genius!!!!!

  • theres a version of i on itunes. sounds the same, but IS slightly different

  • Like he says in 69 love songs, i think song is ' a pretty girl' ,, doesnt matter how dumb the melody is, its the way it unfurls :)

  • so incredibly awesome

  • bravo!

  • The last genius of pop music. GET LOST is perfect, one my all-times favourite, with THE QUEEN IS DEAD (The Smiths), DISINTEGRATION (The Cure), TECHNIQUE (New Order), SIXTEEN LOVER´S LANE (The Go-Betweens), etc...

  • Hell yes he is. And you have great taste! 16 Lover's Lane, The Queen Is Dead and Disintegration are all works of genius. I still haven't got Technique and Get Lost though :(

  • ok so I am putting you at about my age, 38

  • no one can do it like he can, that's a fact!

    he's a genius!

thanks for posting this video :)

  • Is there nothing that Stephen Merritt can't do? He's Brilliant . . . no one can dispute this.

  • The loop of synth-strings and piano-chords as well as the vocal melody is extraordinary, everything else is rather dull. Yet a great song since it was made in very short time...

  • I heard this broadcast on NPR when it was brand new!

  • sweeeeeeeeet!

  • check out that studio!

  • hey, why don't you put on georgie james' "monument"? that's a really good one...

  • YES ... The Magnetic Fields are coming with a new album, titled "Distortion" on the 15th of january ... and will also perform a small US-Tour. Please Merritt come to europe to!!!

  • I like this. Does he have another album on the way?
