I don't agree. Magnetic Fields were VERY indie throughout the first few albums. In
fact, quintessential dreampop. Even 4AD tried to sign them. As Stephin's sound became more sophisticated, maybe after the Sixths, maybe it became more of an "art" band than an indie band, whatever that means. I mean that they are on the same label than Laurie Anderson, that's what I mean.
It's odd how limited the appeal of The Magnetic Fields are. It seems like those who are in to pop don't like them because they are idiosyncratic whereas many rock people can't get in to them because they follow a more traditional pop song structure. They need more fans!!!
Stephin Merrit was only ever vaguely associated with the indie scene. I guess the indie scene only really ever took him in because of the musical diversity in it. But Merrit has always really been different. He proudly embraces unoriginality and formalism, but he does so in a very beautiful, ironically original way. I don't fault him for using protools; I wish the rest of the music industry could learn from his beautiful use of it.
I think it's something to do with the intervals he's using, though I could be wrong about that. Like the 1 is the first degree of the scale and 9 is a ninth of some kind above it. Either that or it's something a bit simpler like just the number of semitones between the notes in that little bit, if I'm wrong someone please correct me!
when npr asked him to write a song they showed him some pics and phrases. he picked a photo of a man covered in baby dolls (hence the name 'man of a million faces') and he picked the phrase 1974
The last genius of pop music. GET LOST is perfect, one my all-times favourite, with THE QUEEN IS DEAD (The Smiths), DISINTEGRATION (The Cure), TECHNIQUE (New Order), SIXTEEN LOVER´S LANE (The Go-Betweens), etc...
Hell yes he is. And you have great taste! 16 Lover's Lane, The Queen Is Dead and Disintegration are all works of genius. I still haven't got Technique and Get Lost though :(
The loop of synth-strings and piano-chords as well as the vocal melody is extraordinary, everything else is rather dull. Yet a great song since it was made in very short time...
YES ... The Magnetic Fields are coming with a new album, titled "Distortion" on the 15th of january ... and will also perform a small US-Tour. Please Merritt come to europe to!!!
Very attractive song

He was the artist. He wasn't using Pro Tools, the engineer was. It's a great song considering the time restraint.

frymaster925 3 years ago
You're right, he's referring to scale degrees or intervals. The first, ninth (which is the same as a 2nd), seventh, and fourth notes of a scale.
