hey thanks for the vid. but im still a little frustrated, ive been searching for a kick sound that i want for a very long time. and with some fundamentals i feel i can get that sound. Im full aware that Every Kick is different, but if u cud cud u give me a basic EQ method or flat out with to cut boost whatever. Im bein pretty straight forward cus i do need help, Drums are difficult for Me.
Sounds great!!! i love how Ubuntu is leading the way for music production. I am soooo glad I have never used ProFools. I only use Linux/Ardour. I friggin LOVE it!
just a little thing i've learned when working with kick drums. Compression is a good factor to help you get that thumping pushy kick feel(Depending what you're going for though) you can always add thump in an EQ, however make sure the frequency doesn't get in the way of anything else in your mix or that something else is masking your kick because it's most dominant in that frequency, Lastly when most try going for anything above 1.5k for that punchy beater sound. EQing after compression is key:D
Before this I was increasing the low shelf on EQ to add meat to kicks and its was clipping and still not sounding great. Gotta try different ways I guess! Never even thought about enhancing the mid-high area!
Best way is to CUT the Low mid area around 300 to 400hz! with a nice countour cut. Removing that chaotic area reviels a nice tone on your Kick drum.. to help it cut thru a bunch of guitars and so on, a nice hi-mid boost helps.. your choise from 2.5k - 4k - 6k.. I've done 3k.. what ever works for you.
@girotube Thanks for helping me out there! It can be so frustrating trying to get your kick sounding nice. I'll definitely try this out next time I'm in the studio!!
Cool, I'm realizing wide Q for high mids is the way to go for a kick to be heard though the mix..not just felt. The wide Q will give it presence on the crappy-est of speakers.
great video, I just got cubase and have no idea where to start recording my drums.. Wish you did more of these on the rest of the kit.. (Maybe something to think about?)
Like most people I record pretty hot. I think a lot of people are inclined to do compression first to control dynamics and then eq, then maybe compress again but i prefer (especially for a kick drum or bass) to do my negative eq first and maybe a little positive, then compress. That way I won't be triggering my compressor with all that 200-1k gunk (for kick) that tends to get in the way and pushing down the more useful lows and top end detail. Afterwards I can push the highs and lows.
@girotube How do you split your drums into separate parts like that? Did you convert the drum track to midi? If so how do I convert my audio drum track to midi?
Hey man loving that sound!! I have a question when processing the kick drum what do you start with a compressor or an EQ? Haven`t heard drums like that in a while.
Hmm, im not sure about using 2 eq's. i would try and get the raw sound better, maybe by changing positioning or microphone or both.. It sounds as if your mic cant handle the sound pressure and is distorting, either that or your input signal is too 'hot'. The kick drum is also sounding rather dynamic, in this case i would use compression. But in saying all that, it all comes down to what YOU like. peace and happy recording.
@cavabanana Look at the meter.. how can it be clipping? hehe!
The mic is a Beta 52a! signal is not clipping. Double EQ has been done to death, the natural sound of the kick and mic is better but for hard rock and other pop music you need to make it more drastic to cut in the mix.. Also the video has a terrible compression from YT and the kick ended with a bad transient..
Plus I don't use R-channel anymore nor have used it on any production.
@cavabanana Don't confuse clipping with video compression artifacts.. Which was the end result when I uploaded this video. That grk grk weird click sound on the transient is from the MP4 compression. Since youtube compresses the video too so its a double compression.. very bad.. Hate MP4. it goes out of sync too.
Thanx for watching .. but no audio clipping from my end nor mic, nor interface, etc. I record drums all the time my friend...
I need to learn where I should or could be using expanders to improve my mixes, but its confusing to me, even though I am good with compression. Expanders, now thats what we need a video about!
But the best part of this video is the conversation about Pro-Tools & Cubase in the comments, as a Cubase & nuendo user I feel totally vindicated LOL
Still, Im not happy with the warmth, space, and general quality Im getting out of Cubase, a bit, harsh, digital and small compared to things I hear.
Nuendo $2,000. The rest is history. Cubase 5? same audio engine.
Perhaps I can A/B something for you! ( "bit, harsh, digital and small compared to things I hear.") U just inspired me to upload a video with a hop demo produced mixed and mastered in Cubase.. :) See if its too small sounding for you!
@girotube Haha OK, Id like to hear that, but I wasnt blaming Cubase for the sound Im getting, more my mixing, but I ran out of characters so I coulden't elaborate. I have a realively low end home studio soundcard (i.e. crappy A-D converters) and same goes for the preamp and mic, so that account for the harsh small vocals I get. Now as for the synths, samples, etc I use, that is where I wish I was getting a calmer larger more spacious sound. Id like to find out how. Check one of my beats to see..
@girotube now come on, Protools is INDUSTRY Standard bro. cubase/or nuendo? are you serious....cubase5 is good, but still not as time consuming as protools......cubase has horrible audio conversion......a complex gui.....a .......it slows down your workflow due to technical editing revolutions........WHY do you think....PRoTooLS is Primarily the Industry standard and not cubase???? be realistic, If cubase was better than hollywood would be using it right?

LOL!! ive did hear comments from others about the syncing abilities of protools, man..... thanks for schooling me. i guest i should start using the cubase i have installed huh?
@Vortex4001 Let me tell U what a troll Pro tool is!
We were recording the concert into Nuendo and also Pro Tools HD and mixing live on a NEVE VR 48. PT was giving problems seen the timecode from the video trailer while Nuendo was set to go. Nuendo Syncs to what ever timecode you need. But PT didn't like 24fps timecode.. so we had to do 29.97 so that PT could work "happy" as we say. AND right when we are ready to record, PT HD lost the timecode sync. LOL
I call that a very "hyped" kick drum sound where much of the body is scooped and the beater is exagerated. It wouldn't make sense for many styles of music - but when I heard the full track at the end come on it made sense. New age and/or smooth jazz has that kind in kick...
@HiTopProd Indeed. And it's effective for metal, hard rock, etc., as well. Personally, I would tighten the Q, but generally scoop my live kicks between 200-300Hz for articulation. A 2-3db bump around 57-62Hz is a naughty trick that I like to play... ;)
Interfaces dont stop for no reason! something happened
thousands are using it and works fine!
Most likely you burned the firewire connection! ANy firewire device is fragile. Even DIGI interfaces. You can burn the firewire if you missconnect or do something drastic while at work.
MR816 CSX is not FW! it has a FW plug but the protocol is something else.. You can just disconect it while in use, nothing happens, plug it back and keeps running, no crash!
Hey, i'm actually going to buy the Firestudio Project to record my drum set, but my only concern is that my kit is rly big and i use 11 mics, is it possible to record 8 mics first, and then the other 3 with Cubase LE4, into the same "song" without having to buy 2 firestudio projects?
hey cool video im using sample un kik drum and i wanna have this kind of drum kik where we just here the sub bass where kik drum is not present how i do this with eq thanks love ur video
@girotube Agreed. UAD rocks. The BEST emulations out there. Period. I work on actual SSL and Neve desks regularly, and frequently track with hardware --LA 2A's, 1176's, Fairchilds, etc.
The plugs are almost EXACT in vibe/texture/nuance. Amazing!
hehe we are talking about creating a virtual console with the UAD II quad core DSP card. using emulated channels strips from SSL and NEVE.. And some other emulated goodies from the analog world. Check the site, "Universal Audio"
But i just can't replace the sounds of some of my gear with software. From samplers to drum machines, mixing desk and processors, synths etc.
You just can't reproduce it in software. But even though i've avoided it, i feel braver about incoporating software into the mix now the standards are really good. Its got to be the best though. And im finding usable gems outside of UAD too.
Drum machines are a thing of the past. I have a virtual MPC integraded in Cubase 5. Have about a gazilion samples, and tons of my drums-multi layer samples that no drum machine can dream off!!
(24 layers on the snare drum alone)
The only drum machine worthy of the hardware spot is the TR 808. but I do have tons of samples from that gem and some very nice vsti emulations..
I have my db 586 setup as a external vst in cubase.
But interesting. I think it all boils down to what your trying to accomplish. Software and samples will cater for most needs. And yes, 90% of music today incorporates software at some stage if not all stages, but its interesting that 90% of music today is also garbage lmao, but thats not the softwares fault !
But for example, i have a Triton Rack with a MOSS board and i just can't replace it, which is why you see it used almost everywhere still.
Also i can't replace the filters on my AKAI S950, Kontakt doesn't replace the sound from my AKAI S6000, can't find a replacement for what i can do with an Ensoniq DP/4+, just can't replace my TB303, i think i 'can' replace my Lexicon PCM unit, probably could replace my Virus TI, (then again), can't replace my Line 6 pod Rack for direct recording, probably could record my outboard console because even if i could afford an SSL i wouldn't have it here, the list goes on.
Im kind of stuck with a few racks that i can't replace yet. But its definitely down to the indiviudal.
The problem i see is in the past alot of the different overall sounds achieved by different studios was down to their equipment, ambience and configurations. Since we're all using the same software (near enough) this sound is saturating the market and fast.
I think alot of the experienced guys are wising up to this. Instead of smashing those waves in the loudness war,
I'm still using Cubase SX 3...I really like it...It's cool to know that I can do all this...Even though I use a lot of Vsti's I sometimes record live instruments....but also use Audition 3 for that
0:19 pause the video there. You will see on the top left corner of the mixer 2 squares with the -+ icons. this opens the bridge in the mixer .. But this only works with the higher versions of cubase.. like Cubase SX3, Cubase 4 and 5
Hi Taka! Well I'm not using a multi-compressor on this video..
But you can use it in a group channel and it will give more power to the drum mix...
On this video I used a demo Waves R-Channel. The compressor is off and I'm using the expander/gate to remove some mic bleed. Then I used the EQ to give a contour EQ to the kick! Removing almost all the low meds..
i use kick samples work with logic 8 what do u advise me ? i i dont know man i feel that this samples dont need compressor i just put multicompressor and use same setting u did 50-80 khz on the kik
thats a bit of an extreme setting on the eq...the high end seems a little too exagurated for my taste.. but way better than the the un-eqd kik drum which sounded really boxy. i think a lesson to be learned here is no amount of proccessing can ever be better than a good well tuned kit going through hi quality mics and preamps combined with hi quality outboard eq and compression...although if you dont have that luxury then the techniques shown here are spot on!
Irrelevant but its your opinion! Its ok, but don't pretend to know that I'm using cheap gear.
Infact Monoscopic! there are top Mics (BETA 52A) and Top jitter free sync.
So you're saying the kick drum is not well tune? hahah! WOW. I rest my case there too LOL. ALSO! the video has a very poor truncated audio yet when you hear the mix at the end of the video you can hear the drums very crystal.
Using Outboard EQs, comp, etc gear is also processesing. So you are a little off there too!
Do you use noise gate in the snares and kicks? I do... What is a good plug in for the overheads. I have serious problems with that. They sound too big, the sound comes messed up with everything. If I decrease their volume there is no sound of the brakes of the crashes. What is your advice?
No! the kick drums has no reverb.. you do hear the resonance of the shells when I bypass the channel strip plug-in..
All channels go to a room convolution reverb plug-in on a separate group track. this is off for the kick drum! This convolution reverb plug-in simulates the "Room Mics"
Hi... i'm a begginer in this matter... ok... i wanted to know... how do I get the Isolated sound of each drum or cymbal??? should I record them one by one? or filter the other sounds digitally??? HELP!!!
Cubase, not sure which version. I have cubase le, which for it's limited capability is pretty great. It came free with my Alesis I/O 26. I highly recommend both products. The Alesis is great, too because it's firewire so I can do discrete tracks and not just stereo. I think it's $399.00 US at Guitar Center.
you might be right about the miss used word "harsh" but overall i totally agree on your point
the kickdrum is really placing well without getting too loud.
i sometimes put the kick a little too loud into the mix which sounds good at times but really sticks out when i analyze it with a freq analyzer. i really like your (i assume) "raw edited" drum mix
HI MATE! That's CUBASE SX3.1. The mixer has the bridge showing! I'm also using a plug-in not included on CUBASE! I ALSO CUSTOMIZED the look of CUBASE and changed the meters color and I'm using the high contrast! (File-Preference)
Good vid... that's about where I'd put things if I was mixing a kick in that style of music. What's most impressive is the isolation on that track. Very good job. Have you heard of B-Band drum mics? almost 100% isolation and a sound that rivals high end condensers.
LMBO hahaha SO I will make a video with all my ORIGINAL installation DVD and CDs and my USB iLock, BLUE and RED Dongle keys just to shut your irrelevant none sense. How is that? If you can't buy them too bad for you keep using cracks
LOLOL where do you see Drumagog here? You just made a fool of yourself.
AND I use Cubase since 1993 registered user... MAN are you a dunce or what?
Maybe I torrent my $2k (just the shells) TAMA set and my $22K Recording Studio.
I'm sure you missed the FACT that I work closely with Steinberg and I sponsor CLUB CUBASE in NYC every first Tuesday of every month (nysug.com) and that I help people getting started with CUBASE. I would love to see you on the next meeting at Guitar Center 25W 14st NY, NY to help you.
just wait for my video if you dare like you did here trying to insult me! hahaha.
Maybe I also torrent my Canon HG10 HD camcorder! You know the one I'm gonna use to shut your mouth about your antagonistic post.
hey I just read your message. I'd like to go, actually, but I don't really need help 'starting' cubase as I've been using it for years now. that and I've moved from NJ to FL 8 months ago.
I would like to see whatever video comes from it, though.
The User group is for everyone.. from amateur to Pros. Well now you are very very far hehe! but I'm sure they have some in FL. I have my CUBASE 4 upgrade now along with SX3.1.1 and I'm moving little by little to Cubase 4 which is SUPERB!
About showing my dongles etc:
I had in mind to do so anyways since I always tell people here to buy their software.. Its gonna be a short clip. I'm planning to do a second channel about steinberg softwares. But I'm always working and have very little time.
its just like a gate! But the expander attenuates the volume after the signal passes a giving threshold. In this case the expander is set to -20 db. Its helping me to have a more focued kick without compressing.
A gate will shut the signal after a giving threshold.. If the kick signal drops below the -20db it gates the signal and you get no sound. These is not good for jazz or drummers with lots of dynamics while playing. The Expander works best..
I am new to this. I dont really know how to get a tight yet deep BD sound and make it fit nice with the Bass Guitar. I read about it and articles say roll off the low frequecies but that takes out all the bass pressure i'm looking for. any tips?
Westy196740: you can see on my video that I have a roll off on the kick drum @ 45hz on the EQ.... You ca roll off from 50hz down.. this is called < HPF:( high pass filter ) "Roll off"
Stay tuned to my channel for more about this and other topics...
This is a video and audio test for my new drum tutorial! haha An Other one! YEAP! But you'll see that there are limiteless ways to process your drums for the sound you want..
Too bad stereo can't be!! But my stage6 channel is! ;)

Most likely you burned the firewire connection! ANy firewire device is fragile. Even DIGI interfaces. You can burn the firewire if you missconnect or do something drastic while at work.
MR816 CSX is not FW! it has a FW plug but the protocol is something else.. You can just disconect it while in use, nothing happens, plug it back and keeps running, no crash!
check your MOBO for voltage too.

The kick sounds better without the processing. It feels very very very unnatural.

hehe thats the hole point buddy! Its a processed kick!! ;)
I'm sure you love it when all tracks are playing! it just cuts right thru! :)
Thanx for watching!

Excellent man, thank you for the tips and the fast reply aswell !
I never knew about FATSO, im using mostly hardware but i am slowly venturing into software now they have vsts like the SSL strip etc.

Get the UAD II dual core DSP card and you can have emulations of the best analog gear!!
girotube 2 years ago
I think its worth the small investment in comparion to the prices you pay for real hardware.
Until i have to make that platinum album (!!), i guess it will have to suffice !
Is the UAD the best out of the lot ?
I haven't really done my research but i know there is the TC Powercore, Creamware, Focusrite Liquid Mix etc.
Its always a matter of taste, but is the UAD recognized as possibly the best buy right now ? Again man, thank you.
DonJuanDeMarco2 2 years ago
TC, Liquid mix are nice too, very popular but I love the emulations of UA as many out there.. LA2A, and stuff like that..
I'm going for a quad core AUD II to create a virtual SSL or NEVE in Cubase 5 or Nuendo 4
girotube 2 years ago
Its a brilliant idea. An entire virtual Neve or SSL for a fraction of the price.
I think i may seriously consider selling some hardware and join you in going for a quad core UAD. It just might be a better option for me.
DonJuanDeMarco2 2 years ago
@girotube Agreed. UAD rocks. The BEST emulations out there. Period. I work on actual SSL and Neve desks regularly, and frequently track with hardware --LA 2A's, 1176's, Fairchilds, etc.
The plugs are almost EXACT in vibe/texture/nuance. Amazing!
siriusisastar 1 year ago
Mostly Hardware?! What are you making? Im a hardware fan too :)
mordsgaudimachen 2 years ago
hehe we are talking about creating a virtual console with the UAD II quad core DSP card. using emulated channels strips from SSL and NEVE.. And some other emulated goodies from the analog world. Check the site, "Universal Audio"
girotube 2 years ago
Mostly electronically produced music in the dance realm. I do record some bass and guitar but direct, not mic'd.
I've stuck with hardware because software failed to impress me so far, even though the music is electronically produced !
But i've managed to get my hands on a UAD card and it is good. You can safely use the plugins and not feel as though it is lacking something.
I could honestly sell my entire hardware set-up and go completely virtual with a high speed pc, good ad/da converters
DonJuanDeMarco2 2 years ago
and UAD plugs.
But no, hardware is the foundation for me !
Have you got any gear ?
DonJuanDeMarco2 2 years ago
I do have pre-amps
90% of the music done today is on Software.
I have my db 586 setup as a external vst in cubase.
girotube 2 years ago
Sorry it was aimed at 'mordsgaudimachen'.
But interesting. I think it all boils down to what your trying to accomplish. Software and samples will cater for most needs. And yes, 90% of music today incorporates software at some stage if not all stages, but its interesting that 90% of music today is also garbage lmao, but thats not the softwares fault !
But for example, i have a Triton Rack with a MOSS board and i just can't replace it, which is why you see it used almost everywhere still.
contd
DonJuanDeMarco2 2 years ago
Also i can't replace the filters on my AKAI S950, Kontakt doesn't replace the sound from my AKAI S6000, can't find a replacement for what i can do with an Ensoniq DP/4+, just can't replace my TB303, i think i 'can' replace my Lexicon PCM unit, probably could replace my Virus TI, (then again), can't replace my Line 6 pod Rack for direct recording, probably could record my outboard console because even if i could afford an SSL i wouldn't have it here, the list goes on.
contd.
DonJuanDeMarco2 2 years ago
Im kind of stuck with a few racks that i can't replace yet. But its definitely down to the indiviudal.
The problem i see is in the past alot of the different overall sounds achieved by different studios was down to their equipment, ambience and configurations. Since we're all using the same software (near enough) this sound is saturating the market and fast.
I think alot of the experienced guys are wising up to this. Instead of smashing those waves in the loudness war,
contd.
DonJuanDeMarco2 2 years ago
you can stand out by sounding different.
But honestly i don't have the funds to worry about that. Im more than happy to use software if it does the job !
But nevermind me, tell me about your 24 layered snare drum ! Must sound pretty dam good. What are you layering in there ?
And what is a db 586 ?
DonJuanDeMarco2 2 years ago
I'm still using Cubase SX 3...I really like it...It's cool to know that I can do all this...Even though I use a lot of Vsti's I sometimes record live instruments....but also use Audition 3 for that

and waht is ur favourit process plug u use one sample batrry drum?
takafinir 2 years ago
My fav. is the SSL4000 channel strip for mixing drums.
Most drum libraries are already processed...!!!!!
But you can alter it with EQ compression, etc...
girotube 2 years ago
thanks
waht is better remove low freq from bass or add low freq to drum kik?
takafinir 2 years ago
its always best to "cut" the low-med freq. ( 250 t- 400 hz) and roll off below 45hz
80Hz is ok to boost.. not too much..
Boost around 4k for more attack if needed..
girotube 2 years ago
@girotube Also fab plugs. Alge's presets do all the work for the less-inspired... ;)

hey, great job with cubase! just one small question, how do you get the upper graphic window in your mixer, as far as i know, its not default. ?
baboonhunters 2 years ago
Hi there
0:19 pause the video there. You will see on the top left corner of the mixer 2 squares with the -+ icons. this opens the bridge in the mixer .. But this only works with the higher versions of cubase.. like Cubase SX3, Cubase 4 and 5
girotube 2 years ago
are you using a BETA52A?

Its called Rchannel (Renaissance Channel) from Waves .
It emulates the 3 components of a high end analog console channel strip. EQ, Compressor and Gate.
I don't use it anymore...
girotube 2 years ago
hey there,
im new to cubase, and i own cubase Le4
i still dont know how to get each drum on its own track and eq it individually. when i record drums, theyre all on one track. can you help me out?
thankyou
Sakabilli 2 years ago
what interface do you have!??
Was your Cubase bundle with your interface?
You need an interface with 8 or more inputs..
If you have an interface with plenty inputs you need to set cubase to use these inputs>
Press F4 for routing your ins and outs and create all the ins you need, If you need 8 ins, do 8 buses and assign the device inputs to each new bus.
then create 8 audio tracks and assign to each track the inputs buses you created.
Enable all for rec. and press record.
girotube 2 years ago
im using the lexicon lambda interface, and the only bus it lets me create is the same lexicon lambda in/out
im guessing this isnt capable of multi record?
Sakabilli 2 years ago
Well there is your problem! That suck and the version of cubase bundle on that interface is too limited.
Give it to a friend and get the Presonus FireStudio Porject..
girotube 2 years ago
thanks for the advice!
Sakabilli 2 years ago
hi mani really learned this new technik u used i use it now in logic but i use multicompressor .why u used eq and multicompressor to do same job?
takafinir 3 years ago
Removing almost all the low meds..
girotube 3 years ago
i use kick samples work with logic 8 what do u advise me ? i i dont know man i feel that this samples dont need compressor i just put multicompressor and use same setting u did 50-80 khz on the kik
takafinir 3 years ago
thats a bit of an extreme setting on the eq...the high end seems a little too exagurated for my taste.. but way better than the the un-eqd kik drum which sounded really boxy. i think a lesson to be learned here is no amount of proccessing can ever be better than a good well tuned kit going through hi quality mics and preamps combined with hi quality outboard eq and compression...although if you dont have that luxury then the techniques shown here are spot on!
MonoscopicVisionary1 3 years ago
Irrelevant but its your opinion! Its ok, but don't pretend to know that I'm using cheap gear.
Infact Monoscopic! there are top Mics (BETA 52A) and Top jitter free sync.
So you're saying the kick drum is not well tune? hahah! WOW. I rest my case there too LOL. ALSO! the video has a very poor truncated audio yet when you hear the mix at the end of the video you can hear the drums very crystal.
Using Outboard EQs, comp, etc gear is also processesing. So you are a little off there too!
girotube 3 years ago
MonoscopicVisionary1:
About $25,000 on gear sounds good to you??
Hey you know! now that I see your channel I can see that I just wasted my time...

Do you use noise gate in the snares and kicks? I do... What is a good plug in for the overheads. I have serious problems with that. They sound too big, the sound comes messed up with everything. If I decrease their volume there is no sound of the brakes of the crashes. What is your advice?
pretieststar 3 years ago
I use the gate/expander when needed or if I want that effect..
What mics are you using for your overheads??
What are you pluging to? (pre-amp)
Overheads will always pick up the hole kit! You can't gate the overheads..
your mics should have a -10 or -15 db attenuator.
I set them at about 3 feet or more away from the cymbals.
Is your room big enough? you may have a lot of standing waves if the room is too small and not treated...
girotube 3 years ago
can u show as the setting of bass? eq compressor...

takafinir 3 years ago
you will have problems hearing it because we can only hear up to 20khz
Did you mean 50hz?? Its ok but you are better off @ 60hz or 80hz...
Always think of how low the speakers can go...
girotube 3 years ago
is there reverb on the kick?
DeefexNYC 3 years ago
No! the kick drums has no reverb.. you do hear the resonance of the shells when I bypass the channel strip plug-in..
All channels go to a room convolution reverb plug-in on a separate group track. this is off for the kick drum! This convolution reverb plug-in simulates the "Room Mics"
cheers!

Hi... i'm a begginer in this matter... ok... i wanted to know... how do I get the Isolated sound of each drum or cymbal??? should I record them one by one? or filter the other sounds digitally??? HELP!!!
otharennaur 3 years ago
you need about 8 mics.
An 8 channel audio interface.
A "DAW" digital audio workstation like Cubase, Logic, PT, Sonar, Reaper, Acid pro 7, etc to record all the channels at the same time..
Many audio interfaces com with Cubase LE 4
Your computer needs to be good.
girotube 3 years ago
Thnx i have Audition, Sonar and FLStudio.
I have enough mics, one for each drum and cymbal of my drum set, and a YAMAHA MG16, but no interface yet... i guess that's the problem...
otharennaur 3 years ago
Take a look at the new M-audio interfaces
""Fast Track Ultra 8R - High-speed 8 x 8 USB 2.0 Interface with 8 Preamps and MX Core DSP""
ProFire 2626 - High-Definition 26-in/26-out FireWire Audio Interface with Octane Preamp Technology
Or..
Presonus FireStudio, FS Project or FP 10.
You plug the mics into the interface.. They have preamps.. then do your mixing in Audition.

Cubase, not sure which version. I have cubase le, which for it's limited capability is pretty great. It came free with my Alesis I/O 26. I highly recommend both products. The Alesis is great, too because it's firewire so I can do discrete tracks and not just stereo. I think it's $399.00 US at Guitar Center.

man thats some nice groove im loving the backing track
at first i also thought the kick was a little harsh on the high end but it changed imediatly as soon as you fit it into the mix
thanks for the vid
kpstartrak 3 years ago
The track is by Bob Gatzen..
Hmm! Harsh is a word miss-used here! For the high end on this kick being EQd is not trashy nor distortiong... :)
By cutting the lo-mids you get a lot of the fundamental lows and highs...This helps to blend well and it cuts like a knife in the mix.
Cheers!
girotube 3 years ago
you might be right about the miss used word "harsh" but overall i totally agree on your point
the kickdrum is really placing well without getting too loud.
i sometimes put the kick a little too loud into the mix which sounds good at times but really sticks out when i analyze it with a freq analyzer. i really like your (i assume) "raw edited" drum mix
kpstartrak 3 years ago
and yeah i take back the harsh, because ive now heard your mix on my akg 271 :)

NUENDO 4.1 is $1,799.99 us

Good vid... that's about where I'd put things if I was mixing a kick in that style of music. What's most impressive is the isolation on that track. Very good job. Have you heard of B-Band drum mics? almost 100% isolation and a sound that rivals high end condensers.

r u gating ur drums as well?
hegnirst 3 years ago
the kick and the toms have expander
girotube 3 years ago
expander?
wot does that mean?
hegnirst 3 years ago
its just like a gate!
