The wireless card that you will need will have to be compatible to enable packet injecting. Along with the wireless card and the wordlist and BackTrack 5, you should be able to follow these steps easily...

@etx0 it sounds like you don't have the right chipset. Airmon and aireplay usually use an Atheros chipset.

But first, make sure you've enabled your card to monitor by doing the airmon -ng command.

If that doesn't work it could also indicate your RF is off, try this command "rfkill unblock all" without quotes.

If THAT doesn't work, then you probably don't have a Wireless Card that is supported.

Someone has to be online and you need to have very good signal to capture the handshake. If you can't get it, just leave it sniffing for a whole day.

Thanks for the tutorial. I was able to get a handshake after spending a good amount of time waiting for the people to actually get on...but i'm having my doubts about ever finding the password. i have used maybe 3-4 dictionary lists already with no success...The handshake was easier to obtain. being able to find the exact password letter by letter and number by number seems impossible to me right now

If you download a virtual software example virtual box (free) or VMware etc. Load the BackTrack 5 image. I use the live CD and it works great for me.
