I've read the novel. It is a distortion, but mostly in setting: plot is largely the same. In the novel, Lolita is about 13 and it's about 1900. When they get 'married' they don't have sex, just kiss. Girish is in the novel but Gayatri Tantiya isn't :) And Koel has more of a part.

Yup, it's very short but still technically a novel! I have the english translation from penguin india (happily decorated with saif and vidya) - I got it on the internet, I think from amazon. Hope that helps!
