@sinsagoodmansbrother not really, it isn't that hard, its just lots of studying and practicing, toughest part is tones, the fastest I know you can learn it is the military language school, otherwise 2 to 3 years of college chinese classes, I'm in my second year, and i'm still considered basic, but it slowly gets easier if you keep studying it, but like I said, the tones and grammar are tough, but doable

As a child, I was a late learner and I had to go over both English and Chinese almost every day. I still say Chinese was easier to learn, but I respect that as a pictorial language, it may have be hard for a German to learn it... I lived in Shangahi and got around speaking pratically no Mandarin, usually I was able to find someone that spoke English to assist me. Point is you'll have a harder time finding someone that is non-Chinese speaking Mandarin than you will someone non American(British or Canadian) speaking English.
