It knocked the stuffing out of them so they wrote this tune about their pain and gave all the money from the sale of the records to their Pub Landlord who was called Barry Tatlock.
i remember this coming out in the spring of 1983 , i'd just turned 20 . i went in to hmv and bought this , boxer beat by jo boxers and our lips are sealed fun boy 3., with some birthday money i had .

On top of that, the American side of their record company released all their albums as The English Beat. One thing we can probably agree on, they were great under any name.
a really BEAUTIFUL song, published in 1963; it' so difficult to find good remakes of this asinchronic rithm, but this group was so able to convert the sound into reggae, and it runs very nice! i found italian, german, spanish, english...versions of this hit; i choose John Foster's version and this one.
The trouble with England is: they never appreciate talent until later down the line ie 20 years later......I could think of a particular reggae band from Birmingham who are flying the flag for UK reggae all over the globe yet not one of the socalled radio stations would find time to play one of their classics..Peace

Lots of bands just go through the motions, not this one. The Beat really enjoy playing which makes their concerts really enjoyable events, even now. Catch one of their gigs if you can, you won't be sorry.

Anyways I still think this has gotta be one of my favorite songs, although when I saw them (along with ABC) they were gonna take requests and even though I screamed my loudest they didnt play this damn song...Sniff sniff...I was sooo bummed. Then when I realized that the whole place was full of jocks just there to hear ABC cause they heard it on the radio and NOT for the English Beat I was even more sadder.

I was one of the "BEATS" biggest fans back in 1981. I was a "skinhead" a "rude boy" etc. I loved the music and the fact that there was no racism. Unfortunately "SKINHEADS" have become synonimous with racism. It was a time in history when "unity" was rife and ruled. Such a sham eit cant be like that now.

Lots of bands just go through the motions, not this one. The Beat really enjoy playing which makes their concerts really enjoyable events, even now. Catch one of their gigs if you can, you won't be sorry.

I was so sad that the Beat didnt play longer, oh and before they came on (it was an outdoor show) I had to explin to some little 7-8 year olds what ska was and how they should like tehis band coming up just as much as I did...they looked at me crazy too.....I admit I was a bit drunk the whole time but it was my B-Day present to myself...

Later that night at this 80's club I was at the bar feeling sorry for myself when the stupid Shoot that poison arrow song came on and I drunkenly turned to a stranger next to me, with beer in hand said I saw these guys tonight...and they SUCKED She just looked at me like I was crazy.....

Anyways I still think this has gotta be one of my favorite songs, although when I saw them (along with ABC) they were gonna take requests and even though I screamed my loudest they didnt play this damn song...Sniff sniff...I was sooo bummed. Then when I realized that the whole place was full of jocks just there to hear ABC cause they heard it on the radio and NOT for the English Beat I was even more sadder.

heard this on holiday when i was about 13 at primrose valley,filey,also there was candy girl,buffollo soldier,just what i always wanted,and other songs played,takes me back,all good stuff always.good memories.fantastic song

If this song was a pile of candy I'd eat all till I got sick and weighed a 1,000 pounds. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE LOVE this song!!! I used to walk the streets of Chicago and listen to it and sing super loud and people would stare at me. This is such a perfect yummy song I wish I still had this album....meh!!

Oh can someone answer me this....For such a good band why on earth do they get stuck playing small gigs in odd places? I forget who they're touring with now but before they played Santa Fe at some bar? NO ONE comes to this town......

I was one of the "BEATS" biggest fans back in 1981. I was a "skinhead" a "rude boy" etc. I loved the music and the fact that there was no racism. Unfortunately "SKINHEADS" have become synonimous with racism. It was a time in history when "unity" was rife and ruled. Such a sham eit cant be like that now.
