  • great jam. fantastic!

  • THIS IS MUSIC

  • guitar strap slips off...robbie doesnt miss a beat- they just dont make music like this anymore

  • These guys were really "tight", at the time they were as good as any blues/rock group in the world! I watched them many times live, when they played the pubs in southern Ontario. I wish I could have somehow "canned it" so I would have it forever!

Does anybody notice what a great bass player Rick Danko was, he could really sing too!

Nothing lasts forever, but I really miss both Rick's, Danko & Manuel. At least we can still see Garth & Levon!

I'd like to go to one of Levon's midnight rambles!

  • @graylab2

Danko was so high on blow for this gig that they had to overdub his parts after

  • @ZeppelinRules I said he was a great bass player & good singer. I don't remember asking anyone if he did drugs. So shut your face and let him rest in peace!

Also how do you know he was high and what he was high on?

  • awesome!

  • three words come to mind,John Lee Hooker.

  • you guys should check out chest fever from this night Robbies strap broke in the beginning of the song and his tech man had to come on stage

  • ha and clapton wanted to take robbies spot in the band two of the worlds greatest guitarist doing what they do best making the crowd go crazy!

  • Classic! This is what musicianship is all about! The BEST!!!!

  • i could watch this film ten times in a row

  • Unbelievable! Robbie was on fire and Clapton comes in at the end and still blows him away! amazing stuff

  • @pergatron Eric smiles when Robbie is giving it loads. I bet he's thinking "you think thats good, watch this young padwan"...

  • @Paolo264 That is so true. You watch his face and though he is polite, you know he is the teacher.

  • @Paolo264

Musicians of this caliber don't see music as a contest so I doubt he was trying to show him up in any way.

  • @ZeppelinRules With all due respect, how the fuck can you answer for all musicians of this "caliber"... You have no idea what was going through Clapton's mind considering he was most likely pissed out of his tree.

  • is the tone of this Gb?

  • I love Robbie Robertson's guitar playing.

  • Great in this and still great on Robbie's recent "Clairvoyant" album.

  • 0:54 Robbie - "... It's k dood, i've got your back :) *inserts tasty solo* "

  • 4:20

  • It's a lot harder than it looks soloing to this kind of blues shuffle beat. Your phrasing has to be dead on. It's not a like a slow blues, where you can just dance all over the guitar neck.

  • First time I heard this I said Damn Robbie's solo kills claptons here, but the more I hear it the more claptons flows through. Very impressed by how smoothly the guitar strap incident went, I dont think that musicians today have enough respect for eachother to trade spots so seemlessly

  • Eric flows ... Robbie labors .... still, a great bluesy guitar duel ... love it.

  • Clapton can play AND sing, R.R can't sing for crap

  • Unreal, Just Amazing...

  • @LBDarnocCZ

cocaine is a hell of a drug.

  • Proof that Clapton doesn't need a Gibson to blow minds.

  • I like how the whole Band is jumpy and gay

  • @brewjake tool.

  • @jampoetry AGREED!!!

  • the gods demanded this performace exactly how it went, it was like a melt my face off back and forth between two of the greatest. Claptons strap coming off, robertson pickin it up no problem, back to clapton, robbie brings it up a notch and clapton rebutles then shreds... and as far as the concerts condiments, personally i think robbie was playing on nose candy and clapton on some china white...Clapton is god and the The Band is....magic

  • What's really fun is to watch Clapton with Joe Bonamassa (on YT) doing this song at the Royal Albert Hall in 05. It's really fun to put both this and the version with Bonasmassa up and Restore Down on both and watch them together...get out, it's good!!!!

  • Clapton is the head off the cocaine guy in die hard!

  • Clapton at his best

  • Well I certainly stand correctedon Robbies guitar playing....... He's much much better than I thought he was.

  • This is unbelievably incredible! Levon's crisp drumming, Eric and Robbie's dueling blues solos, Eric's tone of voice......a true blues gem! I think I have a new favorite blues song!

  • what say? well, If paradise exists, it must be exactly like this...........!!!

  • I love how he is so drunk that the other dude has to pick up where he left off when his guitar strap falls.

  • @vvBothHandsVV - What? Not a guitar player are you? Not exactly easy to keep playing when your guitar UNEXPECTEDLY starts to fall off your body ...Not saying he wasn't drunk or on coke or whatever but your statement is ridiculous as Clapton proceeds to kill it....Good day.

  • @vvBothHandsVV its all staged and on purpose clapton talks about it in one of his biographies its an old guitar player's trick. watch right before the song plays clapton INTENTIONALLY reverses his strap so he could pull it off whenever he wanted to just by lifting up on the strap. just some good ol fun and games

  • ...maybe you should get hooked on fonix 2...?

  • Un genio...CLAPTON

  • just love it.. the way they gel together.. superb!

  • This is my FAV part in the last waltz. Robbie is so cool how he just makes it up. :)

  • cristo , godo

  • I love blackie sound

  • rick just dancing in the back ground...

  • The greatest live guitar solo in history!

  • remember my guitar teacher showing me this years ago and saying- 'im not a big clpton fan these days but watch him wipe the floor with robbie robertson, and im a big robbie robertson fan'.. what a great piece of blues mastery from clapton and the band!

  • Yeah they just don't make em' like this these days!

  • @CandusAnn you clearly don't get the point of all of this

  • i see just one slow hand and is on the left of the stage (and slowhand is a compliment!!!)

  • 1:19 Robbie says Levon: I just nailed it!

  • I just don't understand how I was never a Clapton fan in years past..... now, I can't get enough of his work..... fantastic

  • at 1:50, Epic coked out nose rub by Robbie

  • @MrWherewhowhen lol it like he spent the whole time waiting for a break :P

  • I go to listen to this once and I'm here for hours!

  • Clapton needs to start doing coke again

  • @MrWherewhowhen Robbie kicks Erics ass

  • @MrWherewhowhen Ya, sorry to say. But seriously...this on coke versus Tears In Heaven sober? Ummm, easy choice.

  • @MrWherewhowhen WTF IS RONG WITH YOU ?????? NOO

  • @MrWherewhowhen

naah... sober, he is still god. liste i shot the sheriff from the last crossroads.... question... the drummer is ginger baker?

  • Great when Claptons strap comes off and Robbie just takes over without even thinking about it and then allows Eric to come right back in without missing a beat. Spot on pros man spot on and we think we invented music these days lol this old footage is from days now well gone by but any young musicians up and coming out there should watch this video on here and before there heads start to swell with arogance they should take it all on board of what a musician really is

Gives me a hard on this!

  • @WIGANDRUMMER2010: If you look closely at Eric's strap before it falls off, you can see he put it on wrong to begin with. What happened to him is literally every guitarist's worst nightmare. I'm not kidding when I say I have recurring nightmares of me dropping my guitar on stage and the neck breaks. I wake up sweaty and panicked. Thankfully, guitarists have a thing today called "straplock". God bless the guy who invented it

  • @tomthefunky I 100% agree with this statement lol. It almost happened to me once, but I had enough warning about it to catch it.

  • @dafishguru: It's happened to me two or three times that I can remember. Thankfully, I caught it each time. Are you aware of the device "straplock"? Go out and buy one. Trust me, it will happen again to you.

  • @tomthefunky Haha, I made my own leather strap. I measured my old strap, cut the leather, did some ornamental stitching, and cut the whole for the strap knob. I dunked the ends of the straps in hot water and put them on my guitar, and as the strap cooled, it shrunk to fit my knobs. You would almost have to cut them off now, but why? It looks soooo good

  • @dafishguru: HAHA! That's cool, man. Very inventive of you.

  • @tomthefunky I`m looking for a place where I can buy a whole snakeskin, so I can stitch that on my next one... Its gonna be badass

  • @dafishguru: You should go to South America into the Amazon and find one of those giant pythons and wrestle it, then kill it and skin it. Or you could go to India, blindfold yourself and fight a cobra. Then if your ever in a guitar dual with a guy, you can tell them how you risked your life to make your guitar strap. They'll feel like a total fag. They'll be so intimidated by your awesomeness, they'll choke.

  • @WIGANDRUMMER2010 lol eric solos with such ease and robbie looks like hes struggling on it. then you see clapton laughing hahaha he's thinking "im fixing to fuck your shit up" lol

  • @WIGANDRUMMER2010 they're such pros but that was clearly a staged antic Clapton flips his strap upside down so he can push the neck down and have it come off whenever he wants. He even talk about it in his biography. Nonetheless its class class class on this stage

  • @scrumbulent you are ruining our mythology sir. please stop now.

  • @noffgrout how about you learn your mythology and stop being ignorant

  • @WIGANDRUMMER2010 Right on!

  • @WIGANDRUMMER2010 fuckin aye right people should watch this video and i think the exact same thing when claptons strap comes off everytime

  • @jaredwins89

I wrote a coment on here over six months ago now and had forgot all about it. However having got a notification of your reply to me on here I have just clicked on and watched this video again and am just as much if not more blown away than the last time I watched this. This ladies and gents is what true musicians should be all about as in my humble opinion if a band cant cut it live then they are shite!. All up and coming musicians should watch this!. RESPECT

  • one of my favorite movies right here.

  • I have 4 or 5 friends that are better guitar players than EC. I'm totally serious.

  • @StashRiders Most university level guitar players are probably around Clapton's skill level. Clapton is very gifted though, so I wouldn't completely disparage him. If you look at Clapton's best work, you can see a tremendous amount of talent.

  • @yanis3 yeah right haha read my above coment dude and loose your arrogance please ITS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO NOT SEXY!!!

  • Clapton looks like he should be in the woods choppin down trees or something.

    Great performance.

  • I thought Robbie had a chance in this duel.

  • i loce this song

  • Holy Schnikes

  • @morimori335 Robbie just shreds in this

  • Comment removed

  • ...does anyone out there want to quit the comparative jabber and tab these solos for me...? how about a you-tube lesson even...? go on - it's a much better use of your energy...

  • Robbie did his best but you just can'y outduel Slowhand on guitar.

  • semplicemente grandiosi !!!!!!!!!

  • I find it strange that clapton's strap falls off just as the solo ends. quite a coincidence.

  • i love how robbie fills in when claptons strap fd up

    the band is great

  • 76

  • sorry 78

  • this was 1968 or 1969 who would do this now. no one

  • @beboploo It was actually around 1978

  • @Eduardo10390 This performance was in 1976.. The film was released in 1978. :-)

  • I don't like this! It's not Duran Duran or even close

  • 4 people have musical taste that I respectfully disagree with.

  • Four douchebags DIDN'T like this video! Fucking Republicans.

  • Clapton was drunk as fuck at this show, But this man can play that drunk the blues better than 99.9% of the guitar players....

  • The duel only took place cos of that strap slip

  • The duel that was not meant to be turns out to be a Sweet Sweet piece of musical history & PRICELESS!

  • Shit I wish I played as good as Clapton when Im sober.hahaha

  • Clapton always idolized these guys, hearing Music From Big Pink is one of the reasons he decided to call Cream quits... He loved their music so much, he wanted to do something like it himself and saw no way of getting there with Cream.

Too bad he's so wasted in this performance... it would have been nice to see him play with them when he was in tip top form, not a raging alcoholic lol

  • THIS IS WHY I LOVE CLAPTON, YOU COULD LISTEN FOR HOURRRRSSSS AND HOOOURRSS AND HOUUURRSSSS......YEAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! XXXXXXX

  • @MichaelPalinFan2008 but they called slowhand!

  • robbie robertson looks like a joke near clapton but still, love him anyway

  • @krakauerdav5 Not particularly, Robertson holds his own and in general seams to be a far better guitarist then Clapton

  • @BackRockDelta Robbie is good but he's no Clapton

  • THE MAN!!!!!

  • top notch Clapton, ty Eric !

  • top notch Clapton, ty Eric !

  • sorry men

  • six good man on stage say no more. priceless music

  • Did you noticed the genius on drums?

  • @maxxxx1972 Levon helm

  • @SMDforTacos i know the name, i'm a great fan of The Band.

It was just a rhetorical question

  • Eric needs to get some strap locks, ha!

  • Goose bumps, simple!!!

  • please check out my son...named after Eric Clapton...primussux (channel) and theDIMENSIONchannel (channel) originals and covers...guitar player, singer, songwriter...very talented and I say that cause it's true not cause I'm his mom:) thanks:)))

  • Winner: Robbie!

  • Orgasm at 2:44 *_*

  • god it's just so fucking awesome how he just improvs that solo while clapton's strap takes a pooper

  • even if not compared to Eric, Robbie is the worse and the worste!!!!

  • his strap fell off

  • Too funny.... @2:39 Eric has a huge smile after Robbie's solo as if to say, "Dude, don't even go there. I'll wipe your ass with my hand."

  • Good ole Rick Danko let me hang out w him backstage @ My Father's Place. He opened 4 Aztec Gaystep!!! Smoked a bone w him and he invited us to Manhattan but my pal chickened out.I think anybody could jam with them-salt of the earth the Band.

  • we used to smoke bongs to this album up in Oneonta. This was the climax of that whole awesome side w The night thay drove old dixie down , Paul Butterfield on Mystery Train& Muddy's Mannish Boy. I always thought Eric's string broke and Robby took over. After this we were at the top of the world-how could u not b?

  • holy fuck robbie down strokes so fucking fast

  • they still call him "slowhand"?????????

  • If that's what cocaine will do to you then sign me up!!!

  • I would of rather seen this Concert than been at Woodstock

  • 4:16 onwards, he's reached his zenith...it's an example of (even though I prefer many other bands over bands Clapton has been in) I think he's the best guitarits England has ever produced. He's absolutely FLYING at 4:16, you can it. Magic is happening right there, before our eyes. Robertson is stunning too...as are all The Band.

  • had a thousand orgasm during the song

  • @brattis9525 amen to that.

  • Clappers was so much better back then...lost his oomph these days. Plays perfect now but it's so sterile. Back then it came from his heart rather than his head.

  • @justinwiggy you said it!

  • It's so amazing how clapton drops his guitar and then the other guitarist just picks up from where he left off. That's just amazing.

  • @uhh06 Robbie Robertson's improve here is one of my favorite guitar moments of all time.

  • @drivebytruckerz it's nearly seemless

  • seras siempre el mejor

  • Robbie plays a guitar with 3 single coil pickups he just had the middle one moved down beside the bridge because he didnt like playing and getting his pick stuck in the coils

  • and how is robbie robertson not included as one of the best guitarists ever?

  • Clapton has amazing touch, Robbie might as well be playing with his toes

  • Clapton shouts "Rob!" when the strap looses?

  • @narnode He shouts "Hold On"

  • @rockstar2192

On the album, and in the movie it is G, you're right on. In this particular youtube video, the Key is G#.

  • what clapton playes here is incredible! Wish I could play this. I tried this, but i never would've guessed he played so fast... he makes it sound so easy...

  • one of fave clapton performances of all time and robbie rips it too!!!

  • The best version of this song I ever heard!!!! kept me smiling the whole song:)

  • that beat is fcking amazing!!! the guitar as is just an orgasm of sound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • when I first watched this, when Robbie came in with the solo, I thought that they had practiced it. I later realized that Robbie started up because Eric's guitar strap got undone and he said "Hold on"

  • @EmFayg yeah i thought robbies part seemed practiced (possibly, unsure) but where does Claptons strap come undone?

  • @Wearer0fPleats right at :52

  • Best further ever? YES SIR! Robbie is definitely like .... SHIT>..it's Eric. i am gonna bring it and Clapton is mr. cool and is like oh, ok Robbie, let's get this done. Clapton is so good.

  • I love the Band! Let the strap break!!!!!!!!!!!

  • that'd be sick if they put this song on rockband 3

  • @marshmack91 That is by far one of the most disrespectful comments I have ever read. How dare you limit the talent of the great Robbie Robertson and Eric Clapton to something so generic and mindless as Rockband. Atleast you weere able to listen to such an amazing video, for that I thank you.

  • @bassist448 I didn't think raising awareness about great artists and having fun in the process was offensive. MY BAD

  • @bassist448 Putting an influential such as this on Rock Band would bring the music that we all know and love to the masses, you wouldnt believe how many people dont even know who The Band is. It would let more people enjoy the music, thats mostly what Rock Band is founded off of. So I dont think it was disrespect. Unless you have some sort of problem with music being shown to the masses of new generations.

  • Id never have to go to a concert again in my life

  • Cocaine and guitar duels it doesnt get any better

  • @arsenal8127 Drugs were present in large quantities during the concert. Backstage, a room was painted white and decorated with noses from plastic masks while an audio tape of sniffing noises played in the background.[10] A large blob of cocaine hanging from Neil Young's nose was edited out in post-production through rotoscoping

  • @arsenal8127 it wasn't a deliberate duel. Clapton's guitar strap broke and Robbie jumped in.

  • @Nicolita1972

If you look closely you can see why it fell off, he had it on wrong, you can see that he has it folded over, no wonder it fell off.

  • @arsenal8127 so true dude. everyone from marty scorsese to the lowliest roadie was prolly enjoying coca cola to the fullest extent at this show. and as you said, much to our benefit. thumbs up indeed/

  • love the words of this song, and the way eric sings them!

  • Thank God for the Band, Clapton and the rockin Blues!!!
