According to the history, the original Transformers mini series eclipsed the Go-Bots original miniseries by a mere month.
The Transformers three-part mini-series was animated by Japan's famous Toei Animation studio and it first aired in the United States in September 1984, then in the United Kingdom in early 1985.
Go-Bots originally debuted in animated form as a five-part miniseries, which aired in syndication from October 29 - November 2, 1984.
You can find the information all over the net. If my searches are correct, Transformers have been in existence since the late 70's. I'll keep searching.
Cheaper transformers but darker origins.. Seriously, an entire civilization whiped out by war sparked by one asshole being folks into robots of their own will. No wonder the fighting was G-rated, they needed to get over their PTSD! rofl.
hahaha. People saying this is a transformers rip-off. It's OLDER than Transformers!!! Guess what that means..... that's right...... Transformers is actually a rip-off of this!
Actually, Transformers is a collection of older franchises piled in to one (such as Diaclone). The show came after Go-Bots did but the concept has been around for a lot longer. The show's just a commercial for the toys.
Gobots was an American cartoon. Transformers was a sort of Japanese anime (written in America, animated in Japan). both Gobots and Transformers were originally Japanese toy lines.
1980 - Diaclone (toy line of Transformers)
1982 - Machine Robo (toy line of Gobots)
1984 - Gobots (TV show), Transformers (TV show)
Takara produced Diaclone in 1980 and Hasbro imported it in 1984.
Popy produced Machine Robo in 1982 and Tonka imported it in 1983.
hahaha. I remember when i first saw the go bots toys in a 'muppets' magazine ad. I was blown away. I remember I got one of the large ones. it was so cool. But then transformers came , and the go bots couldn't compete
Too bad the Go-Bots Battle of the Rocklords kills the original Transformers animated movie, looking back I loved The Transformers more, but now jesus the quality sucks. Go-Bots was a way better cartoon, but Transformers just had cooler shit
transformers WERE out FIRST.........see in japan there was a toyline called Diaclone.....it was out BEFORE machine robo which became gobots.........go look up the history of both before typing...

While Transformers was the better line by far, I still think there were some fairly decent toys to be had with GoBots.
Found a mint condition Cy-Kill (The large version) at a flea market in opened box last year. Its pretty decent. Have it on display with my TF collection
Ive been trying to get Cobrastickers to make a custom label set that could turn the current GI Joe 30th Anniversary Skystriker jet into Leader-1 that Joes can fly. Jet mode only, of course. They've already got plans to make Starscream and the Seekers custom label sets.
Id like to ask any other Leader-1 fans to go to Cobrastickers and ask them for a Leader-1 conversion sticker set too, please.
funny thing was, gobots were actually manufactured better, using die cast metal as opposed to plastic. and they didnt come with a bunch of loose pieces that you can lose. in fact, only one figure had an accessory, and i believe that was Kop-Tur (yeah, they had stupid names, though).
@scottydu81 All the Transformers from the first series were just as diecast as the first Gobots. Such as Jazz, Starscream, Prowl etc The later Gobots just like later transformers were all plastic because I have some.
Only later did Transformers become more plasticy once the Diaclone source dried up.
The original Japanese toy line they used to make the first transformers.
It's sad that many Americans believe that Transformers and Gobots were their creations when they were both clearily made by Japan first! The transforming robot was a Japanese idea, not an American one. They just saw the toys and exported them to the U.S. with new backstories, factions etc. Gobots may have come on the market first, while Transformers had better promoting power, but the fact remains they were both created in Japan at the same time! Making the whole TF Vs. GB argument pointless.
@MartheTormentor884. Transformers Suck shit & so do Gobots. Neither one had a good enough explanation as to why giant robots changed into vehicles on a alien world that NO ONE DRIVES.
@haIoprime360 In Transformers, it was explained that the vehicle modes were for personal transportation and/or enhanced assault capabilities. Cybertron is the size of Saturn, you don't expect them to walk everywhere do you? In War For Cybertron it was shown that their vehicle modes typically did NOT have drivers seats.
For Go-bots I imagine it was the same. Personal transport.
The whole disguise element wasnt implemented untill they arrived on Earth
@ReverendSyn 4 million years later, the race of humans on the planet they crashed on just happened to evolve to be just the right size to fit into, coincidently. lol.
@haIoprime360 Where did you get a ridiculous notion like that? I just said that Cybertronian alt modes didnt have drivers.
The reason Humans can fit into them on Earth is because the Cybertronians scanned Earth vehicles and adapted their vehicle forms to emulate them, including space within for drivers because the vehicles they scanned had them.
In other words, the Transformers changed themselves to accomodate human passengers.
@ReverendSyn So by coincidence they just happen to crash on a planet inhabited by creatures that would someday invent vehicles that Transformers could disguise as. lol. & they coincidently speak English. & one of them is named after an Insect that doesn't exist on their home planet. Good thing he wasn't given a different vehicle disguise, or else it would make even less sense that his name is Bumblebee... like a Camaro. Oh wait... Michael Bay came along & made it make even less sense. LOL
Actually, one thing this show had over TF, was that all the robots here actually transformed the way the toys did, move for move... in TF they just did any old shit in the animation to get from form a to form b
@Kanvass1 Not all the time, the toys were made before the series, therefore you couldn't have them transform the same way all the time, look at the difference between the Megatron toy and Megatron in the cartoon, and the difference between Optimus toy and the Optimus in the cartoon.
I remember when I was a kid, the Gobots and The Transformers came out around the same time. I liked them both but The Transformers toys and the cartoon were of better quality. Transformers were more popular and the Gobots quickly faded away. Transformers = VHS
@ReverendSyn Yes, even as a Kid I thought that Scooter was a bit of a fairy, with that stupid blonde fringe and high pitched voice. He didn't fit. He was like a robot version of Slimer.
What's ironic is that both Frank Welker (a.k.a. Megatron) and Peter Cullen (Optimus Prime) both did voice work on various characters for this cartoon.
Takara produced Diaclone in 1980. Hasbro imported it in 1984.
Popy produced Machine Robo in 1982. Tonka imported it in 1983
btw the 1970s was the golden age of robot anime. my favorites are Getter Robo (1974), Daiaporon (1976), Voltes V (1977), Daimos (1978), Daltanious (1979) and Gundam (1979).
Am I the only one who liked Gobots better than the Transformers as a kid? I don't know why I did. I also ate mud around that time and pooped my pants on a regular basis.
If I'm going to look out for some Original Gobots from 1984 who are known as Machine Robo in Japan, I'm keeping my eyes and ears open for 2 Leader One and 2 Scooter via Ebay depending of the price.
i know people like to think that the transformers ripped off the go bots but really its the other way around the transformers comic was out years before the gobots aired on tv
@MikeD3691 I remember seeing the commercials for the Transformers comics, and I kept wishing that they'd make the toys depicted in the commercials available, since they looked so much better. I also wished for a cartoon.
At least, Transformers had a far fetched explanation for their appearance. They weren't forced to make the cartoon characters exactly like the toys. They didn't have F-15 Eagles with four wheels. Neither, did they have cars that popped up their heads, when being interrogated
Of course anybody who actually remembers this, should also remember that scooter only had blasters for one episode, otherwise he used his hologram generator
LOL... Seeing this intro, I suddenly remembered the College Humor video about Leader-1 being all washed up while Optimus Prime and Megatron brag about themselves on how they got oh-so-bad-ass cartoon and toy icons... XD But who cares? The 90's were so good to me... I love both Transformers and Gobots... ^_^
I laughed when I was at Walmart recently and saw that Hasbro has a line of motorized Transformers with the subtitle "Go-Bots". Tell me that's not their sticking their tongue out at Tonka.
The Gobots were doomed to fail. Honestly just look at their names. Cy-Kill became a motorcycle, Dozer - bulldozer, Dumper - dump truck, Scorp - scorpion, Dive-Dive - submarine and Scooter? Seriously?
The Guardians Vs the Renegades, and they had no discernible features to distinguish them unlike The Transformers. It wasn't a bad cartoon it just suffered from bad timing & lacklustre marketing.
So has Gobotron really been torn apart by the corrosion of war without end? Or is the tiny core the 'real' Gobotron and the rest is still under construction?
according to some conspriracy theorists the gobots came BEFORE the transformers which means the transformers are the ripoffs... i refuse to believe this...
I fucking love the Gobots, brings back great memories of when I was a kid back in the 80's. I used to watch it every Saturday morning and hire it from the video shop.
I think the very best episode was the pilot episode Battle for Gobotron.
I think they made this show to rival Transformers and show some american pride (Which I commend them for) even if it sucked, but you have to admit they have balls =/
@eprisencc To be honest this series was just Hanna - Babera's attempt to cash in on the great results Transformers was making at the time. It just don't stand up to the Transformers if you ask me.
Believe it or not, the Go-Bots came out first, before the Transformers. But like everything in the 80's everyone forgot to get patents on things, which is why Atari is not a household name, but Nintendo is.
btw the 1970s was the golden age of robot anime. my favorites are Getter Robo (1974), Daiaporon (1976), Voltes V (1977), Daimos (1978), Daltanious (1979) and Gundam (1979). if you have an interest in old robot anime, search "robot anime history" or "robot anime op collection".
@RX78 so in the united states the gobots were first. That fits my memories too. Everyone says how sucky this show was but I liked it better than transformers because it had far more awesome space battles.
why all the negativity? gobots were cool and they all transformed neither cartoon lasted very long and just because they made movies out of transformers all these negative nancys come out of nowhere its all good retro
Just goes to show you that just because you came out first does not mean you are the best. Gobots is living proof of that and will never be as popular as Transformers.
@BBmetalhead04 Sorry to burst your bubble, but transformers were technically first. Gobots came out 1 year before the transformers, but Takara's original line of Diaclone figures came out nearly 10 years ahead of Gobots! Diaclone didn't leave Japan so Tonka (i think) saw an oppurtunity to sell vehicle to robot toys here!
I still have all these toys from when I was a kid. I wonder if they are worth anything? They have been sitting in a box in the basement for 25-30 yrs along w/ all my Generation 1 Transformers, GI Joes and Star Wars action figures. Anyone know where I can sell this stuff??
@pfrias I will have to go dig them out of the basement and see what I got. They have been packaged up in a box, unopened for over 20 yrs. When I was a kid I took very good care of everything, even if I played w/ it I took good care of them so I expect them to be in very good shape. I have no idea what these would be worth either so i will have to look into it. If it's not worth enough to sell them, I might as well just pass them to my nephews to play w/. Let me see what I got first.
Can't understand people who rip this cartoon. If you know were a kid back in the days, you didn't care if the Gobots were of lower production value than the Transformers: because you watched them both.
i remember this show?
Crusher scared the crap out of me lolz

TF *DOES* have the distinct advantage as far as story quality and characterization and voice talent.
If GB has only one edge over TF, it's art consistency. TF was great but it was plagued by visual continuity errors.
One other merit to GB. It at least had the voice of Odo from Star Trek
Still, TF was better.

@gopconservative78
gobots is an american cartoon. transformers is a sort of japanese anime.
RX78 3 months ago
I always admired how much time they spent on the lyrics to this song. For that matter the names of the characters, and the intent for originality.

Always thought of this as a Transformers ripoff!

@RX78 ok? still seems like a ripoff of Transformers.

I laughed when I was at Walmart recently and saw that Hasbro has a line of motorized Transformers with the subtitle "Go-Bots". Tell me that's not their sticking their tongue out at Tonka.
kcsledge95 4 months ago
@kcsledge95 Hasbro OWNS Tonka now. So they're probably just having a bit of fun at their own expense.
joethehero2 4 months ago
@joethehero2 I guess that explains why they were able to take on the name without trademark violation.
kcsledge95 4 months ago
Shitastic. I forgot they actually made this crap.
batmanownsyourass 4 months ago
The Gobots were doomed to fail. Honestly just look at their names. Cy-Kill became a motorcycle, Dozer - bulldozer, Dumper - dump truck, Scorp - scorpion, Dive-Dive - submarine and Scooter? Seriously?
The Guardians Vs the Renegades, and they had no discernible features to distinguish them unlike The Transformers. It wasn't a bad cartoon it just suffered from bad timing & lacklustre marketing.
Skullview666 4 months ago
The Transformers existed as toys first, but the Gobots became a cartoon first, only by a matter of months though.
The Gobots were actually called "Machine Men" in Australia. I can remember in 84-85, schoolyard debates over who was better.
Transformers had a better range, better character names & better marketing.
Skullview666 4 months ago
does this show have any talking dogs in it like all other hanna barbera shows/
skysaber89 4 months ago
I suppose it's only natural. I mean... the Care Bears had their Cousins, so why not give the Cousins of the Transformers their own show?

So has Gobotron really been torn apart by the corrosion of war without end? Or is the tiny core the 'real' Gobotron and the rest is still under construction?

As a kid of the 80's and growing up with both gobots and transformers i can safely say the gobots are total robot pussies.
Michael Bay should make a movie about them so he can rape the gobots like he raped transformers.
Equint77 4 months ago
according to some conspriracy theorists the gobots came BEFORE the transformers which means the transformers are the ripoffs... i refuse to believe this...

I fucking love the Gobots, brings back great memories of when I was a kid back in the 80's. I used to watch it every Saturday morning and hire it from the video shop.
I think the very best episode was the pilot episode Battle for Gobotron.
When are they gonna release Gobots on dvd.

Wait a minute......the Gobots were created by the Empire! Nooooooooooo! Only now in the end do i understand.

I think they made this show to rival Transformers and show some american pride (Which I commend them for) even if it sucked, but you have to admit they have balls =/
IamVendetta95 5 months ago
I liked the song because it was so catchy. But the show is better stay in the shadows behind Transformers, the real tranforming robot show :)

The GOBOTS! The GOBOTS! Crappiest toys in the galaxy!
The GOBOTS! The GOBOTS! Designed by an awful company!
The GOBOTS! The GOBOTS! An inexpensive fantasy!
The GOBOTS! The GOBOTS! So poor kids can have toys just like me!

@eprisencc gobots came first transformers were the rip offs actually
711menace 5 months ago 2
@eprisencc To be honest this series was just Hanna - Babera's attempt to cash in on the great results Transformers was making at the time. It just don't stand up to the Transformers if you ask me.
melina001a 4 months ago
@eprisencc
Believe it or not, the Go-Bots came out first, before the Transformers. But like everything in the 80's everyone forgot to get patents on things, which is why Atari is not a household name, but Nintendo is.
Paigeshusband 3 months ago
@Paigeshusband
btw the 1970s was the golden age of robot anime. my favorites are Getter Robo (1974), Daiaporon (1976), Voltes V (1977), Daimos (1978), Daltanious (1979) and Gundam (1979). if you have an interest in old robot anime, search "robot anime history" or "robot anime op collection".
RX78 3 months ago
@Paigeshusband actually Transformers came first.
1980 - Diaclone (toys of Transformers)
1982 - Machine Robo (toys of Gobots)
1984 - Gobots (cartoon)
1984 - Transformers (cartoon)
Takara produced Diaclone in 1980. Hasbro imported it in 1984.
Popy produced Machine Robo in 1982. Tonka imported it in 1983.
RX78 3 months ago
@RX78 so in the united states the gobots were first. That fits my memories too. Everyone says how sucky this show was but I liked it better than transformers because it had far more awesome space battles.

The origin story was waaaaaaaaay better than Transformers.
gyrosplater 7 months ago
why all the negativity? gobots were cool and they all transformed neither cartoon lasted very long and just because they made movies out of transformers all these negative nancys come out of nowhere its all good retro
rudolphofatgrapes 7 months ago
Just goes to show you that just because you came out first does not mean you are the best. Gobots is living proof of that and will never be as popular as Transformers.
BBmetalhead04 7 months ago

Anyone know where I can sell this stuff??
xSOILBORNx 8 months ago
@xSOILBORNx Ebay. Hell if u have anything good I'll buy some.
Gilvader210 8 months ago
@xSOILBORNx If they're in good shape I'll take them off your hands.
pfrias 7 months ago
@pfrias I will have to go dig them out of the basement and see what I got. They have been packaged up in a box, unopened for over 20 yrs. When I was a kid I took very good care of everything, even if I played w/ it I took good care of them so I expect them to be in very good shape. I have no idea what these would be worth either so i will have to look into it. If it's not worth enough to sell them, I might as well just pass them to my nephews to play w/. Let me see what I got first.
xSOILBORNx 7 months ago
Can't understand people who rip this cartoon. If you know were a kid back in the days, you didn't care if the Gobots were of lower production value than the Transformers: because you watched them both.
Emaniac69 8 months ago 2
This is finally coming to DVD but you have to have Video On Demand service to get it. :P
