Fortunately, it's just good faking. I hit the pause button repeatedly on my DVD during this part, and saw that Fry's fist never actually touched his face; nor did the phony bat do anything more than graze his hair. It's the sound effects and Laurie's reaction that make it seem so real.

I think that was intended to be part of the sketch; many of Fry and Laurie's sketches throughout their various BBC series involved Stephen hitting Hugh at some point. And this early sketch really is the dog bollocks! :)
