After games hitted the mainstream developers realized there is no way the masses of gamers would sit and play through a game like dark souls. dark souls is a game for people that LIKE hard games and not hardcore gamers, personally i like my mass effect 2 the way it is, long, interesting, simple, easy OR hard, period.
This video was full of burn. It was brilliant, beautiful and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I laughed so hard because a-lot of it was very true. All I gotta say is, is true fans don't bash. They watch, they interact respectfully and watch the next part.

12:00~12:08 they did have you do a plunging attack in the tutorial, the message is right before the boss's area of which when you enter you should walk of the ledge and fuck his shit up with a plunging attack.
13:09~13:36 Knowing that it's a supposedly hard game you should be careful and wary of things while you play it; I got the hang of Demons Souls in the first few hours.
I find it weird that Dark Souls has such a horrible instructions booklet, the one that Demon Souls had was in full color and had 23 very helpful pages.

I love games that put in effort to actually suceed in the game ... it makes me feel like i learned something new and i am actually really good at the game. Games that make yu use strategy to flow quicker through a game is somethng i enjoy and some games deliver. Seeing DSP videos of Darksouls really got me interested into the game. Because i am a "Fan" of Dark Souls, i did find myself Facepalming a few times but thats the way Phil plays... he sees things differently yet hes as smart as all of us

I rented Dark Souls so I didn't even get a manual. What the tutorial level explained was enough to help me learn the basic controls and get me started playing the game.
@GohTakeshita What people like myself get frustrated with, is Phil's seeming inabliilty to grasp things that we feel the average common gamer would. For example, in part 2 of his Dark Souls playthrough, the game explains how to do a falling attack. The message is located right next to a door, that when you enter puts you directly above the level's boss. How could the average person not put 2 and 2 together and understand that the game intends for you to use this attack on the boss?
@GohTakeshita Granted, there are a lot of things the game doesn't tell you. But most of Phil's complaints were related to things that he could have learned in-game. I don't think the average gamer ignores most of the text on the menu screens. If Phil thinks that's what the common gamer would do, I have to disagree with him.

Oh, and I absolutely adored Demon's Souls and I kind of dig Dark Souls too (although it feels a bit easier and I don't like the open world), but I never played either for a "feeling of accomplishment". It's fun. I enjoy the world, the visuals, the gameplay. It's just a great game.
Phil, you missed the point, the reasonable people don't care if you suck and they don't care if you bitch to a certain degree, what they do care about is you calling the game developers or the people who enjoy the game fucking morons. If you really think that'll lead to positive things down the road you're wrong. I used to watch every video you put out, now I watch 1 or 2 and see the same, "The developers are morons" commentary. There's a difference between that and just going, "This is stupid".
Just to add Phil, I think a lot of people's frustration was caused by how you seemed to often blame the game for things you did wrong. I know it was just a knee-jerk reaction and all, but just sayin'. For instance, when you complained about being unable to hit an enemy and that it was the game's fault, when you just weren't using lock-on.
That said, I'm finding this entertaining so far and I don't mean to have a go. Keep 'em coming.
I never felt like I was working playing Demon's Souls (which I sank an impressive 200+ hours into) and Dark Souls. Really, once you get the hang of them they're not difficult at all. The basic concepts are to move slowly when you enter a new area, keep a lookout for traps, engage enemies 1-on-1 and be defensive. If you keep this in mind it will be a cakewalk. Most of the people complaining about difficulty seem to play these games like they're Devil May Cry.
one thing about the average gamer.... the average gamer does not play through dead rising 2 in a 16 hour marathon without sleeping and then playing through another game.... i mean my brain would be f%&$ed up living phils live ... so the average gamer buys 1 to 2 games a month wich he really loves or was waiting for a long time ...like fifa, cod etc all experts because they only play one or two games a year.... Every game you play you avoid every single alternative method of combat. You find a new weapon or item, use it for a second and just stick to the assault rifle. You always ignore tutorials and basic gameplay elements. Common gamers are more knowledgeble then you. Its like mvc3 without X-factor, or ryu without hadouken, you play games without thought and blame the game.

DSP, your skill levels at different games types are not equal. You say you are the representation of the average gamer, but you are clearly above/below average at different games. Would you put up with the complexities of fighting games if you didn't have 10+ years of experience with those types of games? Take a few minutes online to look up things you don't understand about Dark Souls so you can do better. When you die, think of why you died and how to fix it, don't just repeat what you did.
@bagelobo That's a really good point, but like he said (don't know if you watched the entire video), you don't HAVE to learn all of the complexity of a fighting game (SF) to "beat" the game.

An average gamer doesn't usually play games which are hard and complex and that you have do hours and hours of research to learn how to play the game. Like Phil and I said, a game is supossed to be fun, not work. Here are some examples of average games. Rage, Alice: Madness Returns, Dead Island, Driver: San Francissco, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and Red Dead Redemption.

... and whenever you die, you learn from whatever mistake you just made (because in these games it's almost always the player's fault when they die, not the games), be keep in mind to not do that again in similar situations in the future, and then you continue to be extra cautious in every action you take.
Now, I know that doesn't appeal to everyone, but for this particular game, the whole point is to be apprehensive of every step you take because death lurks around every corner.

For a PC game like Witcher 2, which also has a hardcore PC fanbase, I can understand everyone getting upset with him not learning and not WANTING to learn beforehand or during gameplay (looking stuff up). As a PC gamer you almost always have to look shit up for the more serious games you play, and the information is easily accessible (youre not playing on console then have to go over to computer etc..), people LIKE looking for information and that sort of stuff, that's why wikis are so popular.
Like you said DSP, it's your opinion, these types of games turning into "work."
A lot of people who like these kinds of games don't view it that way, at least not with a negative attitude (if you have to "work" to beat a game, or parts, that's not what a game is supposed to be like. For them they put in work and get rewarded for it, sometimes greatly). If you also put in at least a little bit of "work" to learn things at certain parts, the game will be MUCH more enjoyable.

I love games that put in effort to actually suceed in the game ... it makes me feel like i learned something new and i am actually really good at the game. Games that make yu use strategy to flow quicker through a game is somethng i enjoy and some games deliver. Seeing DSP videos of Darksouls really got me interested into the game. Because i am a "Fan" of Dark Souls, i did find myself Facepalming a few times but thats the way Phil plays... he sees things differently yet hes as smart as all of us

I rented Dark Souls so I didn't even get a manual. What the tutorial level explained was enough to help me learn the basic controls and get me started playing the game.

@GohTakeshita What people like myself get frustrated with, is Phil's seeming inabliilty to grasp things that we feel the average common gamer would. For example, in part 2 of his Dark Souls playthrough, the game explains how to do a falling attack. The message is located right next to a door, that when you enter puts you directly above the level's boss. How could the average person not put 2 and 2 together and understand that the game intends for you to use this attack on the boss?

Oh, and I absolutely adored Demon's Souls and I kind of dig Dark Souls too (although it feels a bit easier and I don't like the open world), but I never played either for a "feeling of accomplishment". It's fun. I enjoy the world, the visuals, the gameplay. It's just a great game.

Just to add Phil, I think a lot of people's frustration was caused by how you seemed to often blame the game for things you did wrong. I know it was just a knee-jerk reaction and all, but just sayin'. For instance, when you complained about being unable to hit an enemy and that it was the game's fault, when you just weren't using lock-on.
That said, I'm finding this entertaining so far and I don't mean to have a go. Keep 'em coming.

I never felt like I was working playing Demon's Souls (which I sank an impressive 200+ hours into) and Dark Souls. Really, once you get the hang of them they're not difficult at all. The basic concepts are to move slowly when you enter a new area, keep a lookout for traps, engage enemies 1-on-1 and be defensive. If you keep this in mind it will be a cakewalk. Most of the people complaining about difficulty seem to play these games like they're Devil May Cry.

The only time I ever enjoy watching someone else play a game instead of playing it myself, is when it's sitting with friends and watching each other play and having a good time. Every game you play you avoid every single alternative method of combat. You find a new weapon or item, use it for a second and just stick to the assault rifle. You always ignore tutorials and basic gameplay elements. Common gamers are more knowledgeble then you. Its like mvc3 without X-factor, or ryu without hadouken, you play games without thought and blame the game.
I still like your vids and ignorance. Hard game, but I've had this problem with your playthroughs before Dark souls.

DSP, your skill levels at different games types are not equal. You say you are the representation of the average gamer, but you are clearly above/below average at different games. Would you put up with the complexities of fighting games if you didn't have 10+ years of experience with those types of games? Take a few minutes online to look up things you don't understand about Dark Souls so you can do better. When you die, think of why you died and how to fix it, don't just repeat what you did.

An average gamer doesn't usually play games which are hard and complex and that you have do hours and hours of research to learn how to play the game. Like Phil and I said, a game is supossed to be fun, not work. Here are some examples of average games. Rage, Alice: Madness Returns, Dead Island, Driver: San Francissco, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and Red Dead Redemption.

... and whenever you die, you learn from whatever mistake you just made (because in these games it's almost always the player's fault when they die, not the games), be keep in mind to not do that again in similar situations in the future, and then you continue to be extra cautious in every action you take.
Now, I know that doesn't appeal to everyone, but for this particular game, the whole point is to be apprehensive of every step you take because death lurks around every corner.

For a PC game like Witcher 2, which also has a hardcore PC fanbase, I can understand everyone getting upset with him not learning and not WANTING to learn beforehand or during gameplay (looking stuff up). As a PC gamer you almost always have to look shit up for the more serious games you play, and the information is easily accessible (youre not playing on console then have to go over to computer etc..), people LIKE looking for information and that sort of stuff, that's why wikis are so popular.

A lot of people who like these kinds of games don't view it that way, at least not with a negative attitude (if you have to "work" to beat a game, or parts, that's not what a game is supposed to be like. For them they put in work and get rewarded for it, sometimes greatly). If you also put in at least a little bit of "work" to learn things at certain parts, the game will be MUCH more enjoyable.
