man, really? he's not talking about god, He's talking about stars, anyone that would look up Carl Sagan Doesn't give a flying, flaming shit about your god.
Carl Sagan's early death aged just 62 was one of the greatest losses imaginable to the human race. Few men in history have ever said so clearly why we should put aside our petty. childish and self centered passions and work together, not like the Borg but as a free, united collective of individuals all pulling in the same direction. Politics, religion and ethnic division keep us in chains and anchored in all the follies of our primitive past.
Imagine living on a planet far above the disk of the Milky Way and watching that awesome scene as the galaxy rises above the horizon each night. And to think, there may be beings that get to see just that. Wow, just wow...
I dream about the spark of Carl's consciousness which has reconstituted with what i imagine to be a universal essence, that spark of life, something which is in all of us who are alive right now...watching this video and wondering, to me Carl Sagan was the universe, the cosmos talking, teaching me... His body may be long gone, but he's still with us, he is in all the stars now.
If only we hadn't lost centuries in vain wars and disputes, how far we could be now... Perhaps having outposts in all the solar system and even 1 or 2 colonies on some of the closest stars...
@Acrimonator Not to be a wet blanket, but finding ways to better kill each other helped advance technology more than peace. Improvements in physics, metallurgy, and chemistry came from a desire to improve cannons/artillery. And as distasteful as it is, analysis of the Nazi V-2 rocket was a huge shortcut for the military US and USSR space programs.
@banana1971 up to us to choose this not to be a fatality attached to mankind... The same being right about medicine wich improved largely on past battlefields...
God - a superior being that requires daily worship from another group of inferior beings, and rules the universe with an iron fist. - Pure Fiction
God - the strong emotions conjured up by magnificent experiences; or actual Universe itself along with the laws of physics and mathematics. - Plausible or Fact
He deserves to be an arrogant die. He deserves to be an asshole if u think of him as it. He deserves to be whatever he wants he is just an awesome incredibly smart person
I'm reading his biography right now for class. This man may have been an arrogant asshole, but he was also a fucking genius and he has my deepest respect.
@Astrosimi I read his biography. It's called "Carl Sagan: A Life"
He also believed in Martians when he was a teenager, and fought against nuclear testing on the moon because he thought that we might contaminate the life present on it.
He was a weird guy, actually. I still love the guy though.
Best case scenario, grammatical errors are technical flaws. Technical flaws are a result in a lack of training and standards, not intelligence. If you confuse apparent technical flaws as lack of intelligence you may loose the ability to nurture and positively influence a new generation. Carl Sagan was a master of approaching refinement of ideas through his character and open minded sentiments. A lesson that should be remembered.
Indubidably. Agree 100%. Honest mistake, no indication of intelligence.
Couldn't resist a barb, though. It was just too ironic to pass up. While we're at it, though I just have to mention: it's "lose", not "loose" in your usage above. Sorry!
Would the galaxy really be bright enough to be that visible? I mean, even on earth with all the galaxy focused in one line, it's not even visible within 5 kilometers of a town or city at night. With the light of the galaxy dispersed over a disk, it should be even less visible.
We will never know everything there is to know, and if we arrive at what we think is the bubble of ultimate truth, there is no way to know if there is a bubble of truth beyond that. Also, since everything depends on how we define it, and we all define things differently, nobody will ever know what everyone else is really talking about; all we can do is stand in awe and ponder the universe in which we live.
By that kind of logic we are all going to die so why bother to do anything to try to prolong your life? The answer is obvious because doing so will provide us with more benefit in the long run.
Flowery thinking pisses me off, there's nothing flowery and overly idealistic about what Carl Sagan says and he is still incredibly profound...
Its not flowery. Your attitude about "why bother" is a universally negative thought. The whole idea is, we don't know, and the search for truth is far greater then actually finding it.
@PJW1269 you're a perfect example of ignorance in not seeing a language evolve.''old'' people see it as getting dumber, modern science proved otherwise which means we are evolving in our language, simply adapting to our surroundings.
Dude--I completely understand language changes over time. But please explain how putting an apostrophe in a verb is an example of a language "evolving". Apostrophes separate possessive from plural; what are the new rules of engagement for putting them in a word that currently has NO REASON to be near one?
Why can't people ever admit when they've made a mistake? And why are people who point out the mistake attacked for it? By your argument, I can decide to "evolve" the traffic rules by yielding when I should stop, stopping at a green light, and turning left on red. We have grammar rules for good reasons; let's use 'em. There's a difference between "language evolution" and just a plain old error.
I just wish I knew of this man's existence when I was in school. I heard of his name but never cared until I turned 21. I questioned faith all my life but never became atheist until I studied religion in depth and its history when I was 18.
If I knew of this show's existence when I was younger, I would have been an atheist much sooner.
No, Agnostic means you don't know, not "can't prove".
Also yes, he did reject the notion of "god". He was Atheist in the Theistic sense.
If you say that God is some creature/person on a throne, pulling the strings of the cosmos, which there is no evidence to support, then Carl, like myself, reject that notion based on nothing to support it.
Now if you say that "god" is the combined laws of nature and science, then I, like Carl, believe in that "god".
I can't speak for us all, but I think we prefer "unfettered".
I can speak for myself when I say that I am, regrettably, often also unfettered by grammatical and spelling restrictions as well ;)
Lastly, I can speak utter truth when I say neither theists nor atheists can claim a monopoly on good grammar. And that flaming someone for bad grammar is one of the most obvious and petty trollings on the internet.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Was it trolling? I was simply addressing a presupposed argument by Atheists that they are intelligent, mostly in contrast to Theists who are "ignorant."
I like your proposal though, that perhaps we should address our differences "intelligently," rather than setting up straw-man adversaries and assuming delusional superlatives.
However, I think I'd rather be an obnoxious Youtube troll than to be one who, ironically, is living in a fantasy world.
yea, and do you get that my comment was that if you pick by grammatical errors for people that are writing in their second or third language you must be a genius...
