WOW thanks for this post, I never dreamed I'd hear that on a squeeze-box, but boy-howdy I like Jo-El so I gave it a shot and glad I did. Thanks a bunch! - BCOR Radio
Is he touring again? I wasn't sure if he was making music since his wife passed away. I was a teenager working in radio when "Tear Stained Letter" came out, and I've always loved that song. This is great! Thanks for sharing!
Jo-EL never stopped touring or recording. Yes, he did lose his first wife almost 20 years ago but he used his music to get through the pain of the loss. He has just released his 30th. cd. "The Real Deal".
You better do some research on his music because he started recording Country music in 1974 for Mercury records and he had the first recording of "I've Been Around Enough To Know" long before John Schneider even came along. Ernest did love Jo-EL and he knew him well in the 70's.
Well, I had never heard of Jo-El Sonnier before 1989. The Cajun musicians i was most familiar with were Jimmy C. Newman and Doug Kershaw (Kershaw more so than Newman, really). From what I was told about Sonnier when I first heard "Tear-Stained Letter", what you say makes sense. I just didn't know it before.
That's ok, allot of people never knew that Jo-EL had a major record deal in the 70's. With the help of XM Radio and Willie's Place, he is being discovered by a whole new audience. If you like traditional country music, you might want to give it a listen, it's some great old stuff. Doug and Jimmy did come first and Jo-EL has great respect for them both for they opened the doors to Country music for him and all who will follow in the future.

I remember Ernest Tubb commenting on this fella's music. ET really liked him alot.

When did Ernest Tubb have anything to say about Jo-el Sonnier? ET died in 1984. Jo-el Sonnier didn't start making hits until 1989.
