The total population is about 886 million, of whom 300 million live in the U.S. It seems reasonable to argue that the United States really needs a better demonym than "American" since American can refer to anyone from those 35 countries.
I think the most reasonable demonym for the U.S. could be "Usonian" and it sounds cool too!
