Hey, is there any way I could find a way to buy one of these in Canada now? And around how much would it be? And preferably not online, or involving any sort of shipping...
can i get a random sayy...mps or akai mpk25 keyboard and will it play like a synthisizer or so i have to get a specific synthisizer keyboard? just curious i want to get into music
@coed360 No, the MG-1 have no built-in effects like reverb or delay. Radioshack did however produce a reverb/delay effect called "Realistic Electronic Reverb" and Audio Damage made a software out of it, the "Ratshack Reverb". If it sounds good or not I guess is up to oneself to decide. I use my M40 reverb from TC Electronic on my MG-1 and...yeah...I'm in space.
Hey Marc. I bought one of these Concertmates based on your very informative series of videos. I have no regrets. It has brought me hours and hours of fun in my little studio. It cost me about 940 dollars and was newly renovated. I use it for almost everything, all of my leads nowadays. Some chord stuff too and of course all those bleepy sounds. Even now when I have my own MG-1 I still check this series of videos out from time to time. Thanks for being an inspiration. :) Cheers from Sweden!
@AutomaticGainsay It's a beast! I still get somewhat dazed sometimes. I use some softwaresynth's but when I get stuck, on goes the MG-1 and it saves my day. Nothing beat's the hands-on action and sometimes the limitation is good for the creativity. The one and ONLY thing I find myself longing for is MIDI but I'm thinking about having it installed. Maby, cause to be able to use two hands to tweak those sliders would elevate the whole experience. I like to tweak a lot. :) Cheers!
I saw one of these in a pawn shop the other day; for some weird reason there was a hole melted in the last two keys. :-} I'm sure there are replacements somewhere.
Wathing this video I think I've realzed that my peak emphasis (resonance) might be faulty, it only really seems to kick in towards the very end of its max value and by then it pretty much starts self-oscillating. Does anyone know how can I fix this or get the part?
ok, i'm desperate! i've been searching for a sound for years! here it is: /watch?v=a7FVlB-3b80 right there at 0:41 of the video! it's the thing that sounds like a guitar or a bass guitar going "dao, dadao, dao!" PLEASE help me! Is it from a certain synth? a certain sampler? I've heard it a lot in music from the 80's!
i have no idea what yohr talking about but i enjoyed the vid none the less :) is this how people make dubstep tracks? their was a point in this video that had a very fimiliar sound
@Novaheart1998 It is definitely a limited synth, and I could easily see how it wouldn't meet some people's needs. You have to have a specific set of desires to find the MG-1 really useful. That being said, it's more helpful to people if you tell them HOW it sucked, otherwise they'll just think you're trolling.
@tonijn1969 Mostly, the 80 is like two synth-sections of th CS-50, you can play 8 notes at a time, it has a pitch ribbon, wooden keys, and polyphonic aftertouch. However, most of the functionality is the same (there's just more of it on the 80), the same filter and oscillators exist in both.
I love listening to synthesizers. All the goofy hums, buzzes, and otherworldly sounds that I can't get from any other instrument. Now if only I could play...
HI, I am new on synthesizers,so do answer me the question please. In the song miike snow- animal, what do they use to make the intro? please answer, thx!

I used to own a Moog Rogue. Couldn't get to grips with it at all and eventually traded it in for a 12 string accousting guitar and a five piece Premier drumkit. Seemed like a good idea at the time but years later when I searched on ebay???
I have been looking for a song for almost 10 years now and i don't know the name! please help me.i remember it was synthesizer and electric guitar or bass, and drums too please anyone has any idea of what it is? i'm pretty sure the music is from the late 80s and please send me links in youtube if you think thats the one im talking about , the one i'm looking for sounded very much like the beginning in Crockett´s Theme which is synthesizer music i found in YouTube...and then it goes with drums :(
This amazing video series led me to buy my MG-1, but I have a question about it. I plan to start a Synthesizers(dot)com modular system, and I wanted to know if the
MG-1 uses V-trig or S-trig.I know Synthesizers(dot)com systems use V-trig. I am going to use a Q104 MIDI interface to generate the CV/Gate from a midi keyboard. I want to control my MG-1 over its 5 octaves until l save the money to buy Synthesizers(dot)com VCO's, VCF's and other modules.( I am only 15 and can't get a job yet) Thanks.
i read that moog only consulted on this synth and the parts were made by radio shack-- i think it said moog lincensed his name for radio shack to use. still a nice synth though.
@teemack Not all of the parts were Moog parts, but many were, and it was manufactured by Moog. By the time the MG-1 was released, Bob Moog no longer worked for Moog.
@Barrettwoo There are two types of "knowing how to play a piano." 1, having technical piano skill. 2. having physical key-playing skill. You might need the second, but you definitely don't need the first. A lot of decent synthesists focus on synthesis more than key-playing, so technically you don't need to play the piano. The benefit of the piano is that it teaches you some music theory.
@AutomaticGainsay Thanks man, Ive really been wanting one. It was either classical piano lessons or a synthesizer. I think I'm gonna get an Alesis micron
@AutomaticGainsay Just so you know, I was watching the vid because I had a chance to pick one up pretty cheap. I did so, and then discovered the evil that is the "tar foam," that infects these things. Worth mentioning: Tar foam = pure evil. Luckily I found a source for replacing all the pots/switches and plastic knobs that had split. Thanks for making me a convert! What a fun project this will be to restore.
@KillKyleWeiss Yeah, that stuff is awful. The MG-1 in the video had that problem, too- but I ordered the replacement set of sliders and switches, and they were fantastic! Worth every penny.
@Freshboy1594 The more you know about music and instrumental technique, the more any instrument is going to work for you. Of course, you can always just have fun making noises, but you'll have a lot MORE fun if you know how to do it.
@nothinggmsc With all of the problems MG-1s have with slider-goo, it's possible that the slider for your Bell Tone just might need to be cleaned! If your MG-1 still has the black foam, you should remove it immediately. Ha ha, we know it's not junk. : ) Thanks for watching!
Has anyone used the sylenth1 vst? im trying to find a real synth that would be the equivalent of the sylenth1. not in sound but in the features. im trying to desice what my first real synth sound be, and i have loved the sylenth1
i was looking ar the korg r3 but it only has two oscillators.
This was really neat to watch. I bought one of these when I was 15. Had to spend all of the $400 or $500 I earned that summer in my grandfathers Radio Shack store! It worked perfectly until the day I GAVE IT AWAY 15 years ago. I can't believe I did that! Thanks for bringing back memories!
My aunt was going to put on a garage sale, and she was going to sell this for 10 bucks. She gave it to me, i hardly ever use it, the sound on it is really bad. I am going to try and installing some new Audio jacks(im using my guitar amplifier with it) to see if i get a better sound.
@illuminatijews Be careful installing quarter inch jacks... you could damage the value of the synth! Of course, you could also improve the value. You're not going to get a different sound, though... unless the old RCA jacks are corroded and intermittent. If you don't like the sound, you might be better off just selling it and putting the money towards something you like.
@unkellsam I don't think either the oscillators OR the filter are the same used in the Minimoog, although I'm certain the filter, at least, is the version used in some other Moog products. I'm to understand that the oscillator is not actually a Moog oscillator, despite being fully analog. I don't know more than that, though.
great video !! I have a micromoog and I'm planning to get a MG-1 (a guy is offering me one). Is this worth getting knowing that I have a micromoog? Or shall I look for another completely different synth? Thanx and cheers!
@NachinDroga They definitely have different sounds, and it's always a plus to have a multiple-osc synth with a Moog filter... plus polyphony! I say go for it... but only under two conditions... that you REALLY love the Moog filter sound, and that the MG-1 the guy is selling has clean and smooth sliders!
i bought one 10 years ago.not knowing much about synths i bought it with a broken tone source (2).i was wondering -would you suggest going to any electronic repair place or a moog certified one?
The Moog certification is too modern for this device! Anyone familiar with analog synth repair should be able to do it. Ask analog keyboard players in your city who is the best, and take it there! It'll be worth it!
Well, as much as I feel very motivated to let people know what this synth is capable of, there is a chance that the value might increase once they find out! I suggest you buy one as quickly as possible. I think it's still possible to get one for $400 or less!
I bought one of these little machines way back in 1983, and it set me on the course of analogue music synthesis and experimentation. It is a wonderful instrument, and this demonstration brings back some very fond memories indeed.
Well, keep watching... one of the six parts of this demo is about 10 minutes of the MG-1 in action with none of my blathering. : ) Thanks for watching!
In fact, this is a Norlin-Tandy-Moog synth. As Robert A. Moog had left the company a few years earlier when this synth was conceived.
BUT, it does incorporate circuits designed by him, like the famous ladder filter (although using a CA3046 chip instead of discrete transistors), and the "tempco compensated" oscillators.
Norlin engineers had assembled a great little inexpensive synth from various Moog schematics, for Radio Shack. Better than the Rogue IMHO.
Hey, is there any way I could find a way to buy one of these in Canada now? And around how much would it be? And preferably not online, or involving any sort of shipping...

I'm considering buying one. This video was helpful.

what other keyboard sounds like this and has midi capabilities? analog of course!!!

When you tune oscillator 2 in 3:04 it sounds like a bagpipe

This was really neat to watch. I bought one of these when I was 15. Had to spend all of the $400 or $500 I earned that summer in my grandfathers Radio Shack store! It worked perfectly until the day I GAVE IT AWAY 15 years ago. I can't believe I did that! Thanks for bringing back memories!

My aunt was going to put on a garage sale, and she was going to sell this for 10 bucks. She gave it to me, i hardly ever use it, the sound on it is really bad. I am going to try and installing some new Audio jacks(im using my guitar amplifier with it) to see if i get a better sound.
illuminatijews 1 year ago
@illuminatijews Be careful installing quarter inch jacks... you could damage the value of the synth! Of course, you could also improve the value. You're not going to get a different sound, though... unless the old RCA jacks are corroded and intermittent. If you don't like the sound, you might be better off just selling it and putting the money towards something you like.

I found a mint condition one at the Goodwill in Bellevue Wa a few years back for $24!

So its awesome that it has Moog oscillators and filter, but do you know if they are the SAME oscillators used in the minimoog, and the SAME filter?
unkellsam 1 year ago
@unkellsam I don't think either the oscillators OR the filter are the same used in the Minimoog, although I'm certain the filter, at least, is the version used in some other Moog products. I'm to understand that the oscillator is not actually a Moog oscillator, despite being fully analog. I don't know more than that, though.

it reminds me of the nes fm sound.

great video !! I have a micromoog and I'm planning to get a MG-1 (a guy is offering me one). Is this worth getting knowing that I have a micromoog? Or shall I look for another completely different synth? Thanx and cheers!
NachinDroga 1 year ago
@NachinDroga They definitely have different sounds, and it's always a plus to have a multiple-osc synth with a Moog filter... plus polyphony! I say go for it... but only under two conditions... that you REALLY love the Moog filter sound, and that the MG-1 the guy is selling has clean and smooth sliders!

awesome video!lots of sounds i havent used.
i bought one 10 years ago.not knowing much about synths i bought it with a broken tone source (2).i was wondering -would you suggest going to any electronic repair place or a moog certified one?
sctaerprhearna 2 years ago
The Moog certification is too modern for this device! Anyone familiar with analog synth repair should be able to do it. Ask analog keyboard players in your city who is the best, and take it there! It'll be worth it!

@AutomaticGainsay thanks!

how much does it cost nowdays? probably not cheap anymore
we5crazyperson 2 years ago
Well, as much as I feel very motivated to let people know what this synth is capable of, there is a chance that the value might increase once they find out! I suggest you buy one as quickly as possible. I think it's still possible to get one for $400 or less!

i love this synth i own three of them

I bought one of these little machines way back in 1983, and it set me on the course of analogue music synthesis and experimentation. It is a wonderful instrument, and this demonstration brings back some very fond memories indeed.
Many thanks Marc.

That is something I came up with for this video, using the drum track from another of my songs.

this was an awesome demo! i usually just want to hear the synth in action, but.. excellent explanation of MG-1's functions and potential
loren108 2 years ago
Well, keep watching... one of the six parts of this demo is about 10 minutes of the MG-1 in action with none of my blathering. : ) Thanks for watching!

Looking forward to the 5 other parts!!

Great demo! I owned one long ago...
