Indeed "La Violetera" (the theme song for "City Lights") was not composed by Chaplin but by Jose Padilla who had to sue Charlie in order to get his name listed in the film's credits. “La Violetera” had been immensely popular thanks to Raquel Meller’s recording in the 1920s and Charlie was a big fan of hers. The song came back stronger than ever when Sarita Montiel covered it in the blockbuster film “La Violetera” (1958) and has remained her signature song ever since.
As you say Spanish colleagues, the violetera, was composed of a great twentieth-century Spanish master, D. José Padilla Sánchez (WIKIPEDIA). Born in Almería, Spain.
A Charles Chaplin liked the music of Padilla and plagiarized as their own, leading to a conflict with the great teacher, settled in court. Almeria and Valencia, have two beautiful hymns composed by the maestro Padilla, including his beloved Virgen del Mar.
La Violeta is from City Lights, one of the best Chaplin films of all time. It was a big hit before that film done by Raquel Meller who was the major star in Latin music in the early days of recording. Check out her recording too. it is quite charming.
@SweetHeatLatinJazz I'd like to say something about that: Meller was very well-known in LatinAmerica, but actually she was from Spain, where she was a star too... ;)
@CrysisAlbur Thanks for the info on Raquel Meller. "La Violetera" is a great song. we play it in our performances and hope to bring new life to this classic tune.
I love him,I saw almost ALL his movies, unfortunatly I couldn't find one :S I love his songs,it's like he put his heart on them, his soul,he can make you cry, lough, everything. With music or without it he could made magic and he still doing it. :)
Hi there. ... . Tory from Austin Texas. Singer songwriter musician. Check out my originals and subscribe if you like. Please listen to my own original of The Little Tramp..a tribute to Charlie Chaplin. Namaste.
I appreciate your slide show and this most wonderful example of the music from "City Lights." While it was undoubtedly Chaplin's suggestion that Alfred Newman develop this within the musical score, I must point out that this was not, in fact, an original Chaplin composition. As a title bears witness from the film, the song is credited to one Jose Padilla - a name with which I am not familiar, but judging from this expression I no doubt ought to be.
Merci Mauvetys.
The Kid, The Immigrant, Eric Rufus 0:23, Paulette Goddard 0:30, Great Dictator, Roscoe Arbuckle 0:50, Gold Rush, Modern Times (great), City Lights it all comes back to me. 1:37 sums him up. Charlie would be proud of this tribute I think.
Gracias por subir éste video!
