I think Clarkson is a man who knows that he's got to live up to his perception by the public. Most of the time, he's playing up to a personna, put on for the media. He knows that the general public percieve him as a pompus, stuck-up, don't-give-a-(insert rude word here)-what-happens-as-long-as-it-doen't-affect-me kind of bloke, and he absolutley plays up to that. Like Simon Cowell, Jeremy Paxman and others, I doubt that his media personna is what he's like in real life.
Clarkson is an unbearable cunt, but I do really enjoy him! Top Gear, I think, is amazing! However, he does need to stop living upon that tiny little mountain of his and face reality
It's so easy to bash Clarkson, but I still quite like the man. It's sort of like the relationship I have with my dad.... I utterly disagree with him on most points, but at least he's an angry, middle-aged white guy in a funny way. There are people more deserving of my hatred out there. I'm not going to get riled up by TV presenter; it amuses me to no end when other people do.
I'm british and like any human I will think my way the best and others wrong until proven right, an impossibility. the whole argument is automatically nullified by the fact it started with a comment which was obviously ridiculously bias and closed minded in it's conception. i've met many nice americans and many pricks, just like i have the french, germans, and the list continues to every nationality i have met. their views are there own and formed from their ideals which differ cross culturally.
The thing that amuses me about Clarkson is that he does go on quite a bit about Americans and his utter contempt for them, yet out of the many brit tv presenters I've seen Clarkson is the most like the worst aspects of my countrymen. He's boorish, rude, thinks he's smarter than he is, thinks he's better than he is, and thinks everything and everyone can fuck off as long as he gets his big, fast, gas guzzling car. Ironically Top Gear is wicked popular here and people are shocked that I hate it
@BentonRox tbh- i agree with you, i like top gear, but i cant watch repeats of it. because half of the time its just clarkson in a car saying that its like something, usually something shit...
True brit? I hate my country cause it's full of bigots who think, 'we're the best fuck everyone else' but I expected better from Europe. No one can say that's harsh he's one of those conservative pricks who thinks he has so much money that he doesn't need to give a shit about those who don't and that transfers into all aspects of life.
I heartily disagree. MOST people are arseholes regardless of how much money they have. If one is in full possession of one's faculties and decent faculties at that, it is entirely possible to be well-off and understand/ implement ethics, i.e.: Howard Dean and Marcus Brigstocke.
At least, your country recognises that there IS a class divide. Americans like to pretend that there isn't one at all and then spout nonsense about how the U.S. is the only true democracy in the world, &c. when it clearly is not; even the Constitution refers to it as a republic and it's a sucky one at that.
@phytoalexa We need to address class more, but I'll take that over the obsession with it in the UK. It's a constant topic of conversation in the shows I watch, and Brits I worked with in Europe were always analyzing accents for indicators of class. The flip side is that they admired US social mobility. And pls don't feed stereotypes abt us. Only some pple say that BS about democracy, etc. Most don't. Just like there are a lot of lovely people in the UK, and then there's the BNP.
And there's the KKK. And there's CPAC. And there's Rush Limbaugh. And there's Fox News. And there's conservative thinktanks. For every Rachel Maddow, there are ten score Bill O'Reillys.
I've lived in this very flawed country my entire life and I've seen how wonderful (and differently flawed) other countries can be, so I should think I'd be able to justifiably point out American horridness when I see it, which I do. Every waking moment of every fucking day.
@Tracymmo: Three different thoughts. Read them separately. Related, but separate. Besides, the rest of you fuckers are just as much to blame for eight hellish years of "dubya" as texas is. So no matter how vegetative texans become, the rest of you can't be too much better.
You can dress it up anyway you like. There is a reason Prop 8 got passed and there is a reason Fox News still exists. Even if "most Americans" as you call them aren't de facto right-wingers, they're complacent as hell and therefore just as to blame. Silence is acquiescence.
Hugh's thinking regarding Arthur is "hold on this is my Mr Strange character (Milky, Milky)".

I will say that everytime I read a clarkson book I can almost hear his voice saying the words in my head. Kinda makes them even funnier I think.
