Thank you! That saved me a lot of work. When I started listening to figure it out, I couldn't even tell what were guitar chukkas and what was keyboard, except for the main melody of the riff. I watched him play it and he was just flying. This really helped me out! Hey, what's the name of the patch you're using? Closest thing I could find on my Triton was some clavicle hybrid.
Thankyou for that you are good but ive managed to get all the notes but it doesnt seem like the bit where you sped it up it was the same as what you did slowly with your finger and i cant get the right hand bit right
Great, man ! it is many video on the net about this great song but You are one of the best : pretty close, forget about darkness, this is it and it helps !
If one is in Eb Major than the G# should be called Ab..therefore the black keys in Eb are called/named Eb, Gb, Ab, Bb, Db and Eb....PLEASE pretty PLEASE.. light up the keyboard and have the CAM at an angle so all fingers/keys can be seen...like the piano guy who does the I don't like Monday...maybe you should consider a revision ..because U R very close to the record, have the groove and HAVE the funk..OVERALL thanks for putting it up!!!!!
G#, Bb, C#, Eb then Eb an octave lower. Find the set of black keys that has 3 keys, start on the middle note, and work your way up playing every black key.
Does that help? Let me know if I can help in any way. God bless!
That is a "Radio Shack" brand synth. I got it because it has a cool cp80 sound. I think it cost about 3 or 4 hundred. I actually bought it twice because the first one I had got stolen from my living room.
This is by far the best demonstration of how to play this riff in its original key of E flat minor. It also shows you've gotta get into the groove to make it sound really funky. Thanks for a great video.
I loved your lesson! But I get lost at the funky part with both hands... I don't wanna ask but, like, if you happen to have some spare time, would you pleeease consider giving us another lesson? And I really appreciate what you've already done... God Bless!!!
Hi turlteguy, I always use the onboard compression. It makes it sound that much more like a real clavinet. I think I also used to use the "comp/delay" effect too.... I can't remember for sure... it's been a long time since I had that synth. It does have cool built-in effects, though. You can adjust and customize all the parameters to suit your own personal taste.
It can be played in any key as long as it is a minor key. Minor sounds very different from major. Stevie wonder plays it in e-flat minor (or d-sharp minor, enharmonically), but since Stevie doesn't actually write his own notation, it's usually transcribed for instrumentalists in e-flat minor.
LOL yeah ...... thx man .............and it sounds really close to the original man so dont sweat it....... you did a great job figuring it out so others dont have to
I heard the original on the radio today in the car and I thought I had it figured out, came home and found a good midi and read the notes then I searched here and found your vid now I've spend the whole night getting my funk on. Love your tips man, just what I needed. I see you got a WK3700 too, that's funny cause I was trying to read your preset when I noticed it was the same, I get so caught up in the B3 sounds I forget how good the clavi is. Cheers.
dude you rock! all these pianists post awesome videos with no explanation of how to play it....but you're so nice and talented! ^^ thank you so much for sharing! God bless ya! ;) keep on rocking!
Your'e a legend. Trying to decipher the right hand part and then coordinate with the left hand seemed near impossible until I discovered this. Great explanation, great playing.
Turntapzap, just had to comment again. Man, you've got this down! The technical aspects are absolutely spot-on, and the funk 'feel' is sweet and natural. You either have it or you don't - and you've got it for real.
STOOOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPPPPPP...the real superstition has more that 4 tracks of clavi.....so just stop ok? :) but nice job though. For anybody that has to play that live?...this is the tut...peace
Thanks for this it really helped me figure out a riff that one personcan play! The original has three clavinets layered up which is impossible for one person to play of course, and all the sheets I found on the net were over simplified, this vid provided me with a good basis that I can use live on stage and not feel like theres too much depth missing. Once you get your bassist playing too it really thickens up.

In terms of technique, this is about the closest to the way Stevie plays it - which is probably the highest compliment I could pay you! - especially that left hand doing most of the primary riff with the right catching the syncopated stuff. Well done!
Thanks for your comments - those who have given your video a bad rating obviously have no idea how to play - i did mine in d (i.e. i cheated) coz it's easier - most vocalists and guitarists like it in e
Yours is amazing. I cannot believe how you can play the whole thing with only your right hand! Plus, I absolutely love what your doing on top of it with your left hand. You nailed all the subtle nuances perfectly, and you have a kind heart.
thank you so much for making this video it's really not easy to work out but you've got the sound and the feel just right. I'm forwarding this to my keyboardist! Thanks again

all that's being played is on black keys
it can be in either key really

Look for "clav" "clavi" "clavinet" or

worst-case-scenario, harpsicord.
