  • What about minecraft?

  • What about piano players?

  • I play tenor sax but this is hilarious :D

  • Perfect example of Music as a museum piece, nothing vibrant, organic or enjoyable, just like this academic drivel.

  • he means his truth.

  • macs are not for recording

  • We trumpet players are never out of tune and always sound godly. We are God's gift to jazz.

  • @Likety I never knew you played the trumpet. Unless you're trolling of course.

  • Wynton is only speaking from a jazz perspective. Every great master clarinetist of the classical genre plays in tune, but we also all know that its the shitty clarinetists who go into jazz because... you can get away with playing like shit and still be considered good in jazz, not vice versa.

  • @clairannette Your comment is among the most ignorant I have ever read on youtube and I think it comes from your obvious lack of depth and understanding as a musician, as evidencd by your rather inexperienced playing. Young man, I'm certain those blockheaded generalizations go over big next to the Pepsi machine at the community college or with the hippie girlfriend who thinks your smooth commentaries are sexy. But in the real world, it's the best way to get your butt laughed at. Now go practice.

  • @thsmithaudition "Ignorant"? "Inexperienced playing"? "lack of depth"? "lack of understanding as a musician"? "blockheaded generalizations"? Right. No. Wrong. If you'd like to troll, you might try your hand for a day on 4chan. However, it might do you a bit of good to do your homework and actually realize whom you are addressing before resorting to such mundane commentary. 't Is not I who requires the practice. Wynton is wrong & clearly hangs around too many shitty clarinetists.

  • @thsmithaudition Furthermore, your assessment of my level of depth or experience as a musician is outright laughable, not only to me, but to the wealth of persons who are well acquainted with me as a performer, both domestically and internationally. The only thing obvious here is your own short sightedness as is evidenced by the retardedness of your remarks. And I've heard your work. You sound like shit and need to get some damn lipo on those 8 chins of yours.

  • @clairannette I honestly think that it is the saddest thing in the world that you have to make two entire paragraphs to make fun of someone. Just say what you want and then be done with it. Like if you are wanting to make fun of a percussionist, all you have to say is "You don't have any musical talent, I can do the same thing as you can with my trash can."

  • @kltt2 About like the paragraph you just wrote. Don't be so deluded.

  • @clairannette hahaha what a fool you've made of yourself. thsmithaudition is member of the Jazz Education Hall of Fame, one of the greatest music historians of his generation, one of Count Basie's fav trombonists and former conductor for Clark Terry. He was also a regular conductor for the Bucharest Phil. He has forgotten more about music than a silly little punk like you would ever know. You should be honored that Tom even took the time to make fun of you. God, what an idiot. Amazing arrogance.

  • @slamdunk9 Awww... you mad, bro? I'm just telling the truth.

  • @clairannette No I'm too busy making a living as a musician to be mad. If you learn to shut up long enough to get an actual gig of your own and stop making yourself a target for no other reason than to show your ass, then I'm betting you can be happy too. I agree with msmithjazz. The funniest part of this deal is your lack of reading comprehension. You took Wynton's idiot troll bait and attacked all jazz clarinetists. That's why people are making light of you and deservedly so.

  • @slamdunk9 Looks like you took plenty of my bait, but... like I said, you're too clouded by your own arrogance and delusions of grandeur to know the difference. Bask away, my friend.

  • Comment removed

  • @clairannette I laughed my butt off when I read this part. "Your assessment of blah blah blah is outright laughable, not only to me, but to the wealth of persons who are well acquainted with me as a performer, both domestically and internationally."

And you are again? Oh yeah, youtube guy.

Hey if you don't have thick enough skin best not initiate negative stuff. You after all had it coming when you slapped an entire genre ignorantly. Just trust me that you're waaaayyyy over your head here.

  • @MSmithjazz HAHAHAHAA... Riiiiight. I love the ridiculousness of you people. This typically American "you ain't shit" attitude, clouded by delusions of your own arrogance. If you had a clue, you might would realize that my work extends far beyond "youtube", and I'm not here attempting to pull rank. I make no apologies for calling bullshit on Wynton's remark that all clarinetists are out of tune and, thus, are allegedly "jealous". LOL. Nonsense.

  • @clairannette Hey advice to live by slick. You don't think T. Smith's aren't that a million times over? If you had a clue you'd see he wasn't slamming your opinion of Wynton but your BS regarding ALL jazz clarinetists. Learn to read man. Besides, aren't you the guy who be his own admission has blown like 30 symphony auditions and blames it on everything but himself? Maybe you ought to get off youtube and figure that out seeing as how you're arguing with guys who have regular playing jobs. Cool?

  • @MSmithjazz Hey Matt according to clairanette it's because of his nationality and the clothes he wears :D

Well we can easily see that he shares at least one of Wynton's most notable traits.

  • @slamdunk9 Hater! LOL... You guys are something else.

  • @MSmithjazz Bahahahahaa, no, I'm the guy who has won a myriad of top prizes in international soloist competitions and therefore maintains a growingly successful, teaching, performing, touring and recording career. I'm holding mine down just fine. But thanks for the laugh playing daddy defense. Never blamed anyone for my orchestral audition failures but me; and had you read far enough - and you clearly didn't - I never played a single note for most of those organizations listed.

  • @clairannette is this a joke?

  • this video is awesome. and very true.

  • As a trombonist of 40 yrs and past leader of 58 big bands, I've always run with a functioning tuner because we were always the first blamed for poor intonation. But 99.9% of the time I found the perpetrator was a trumpet aka the lazy button pusher. I've never known anyone jealous of a trumpeter. But we have had to learn that they believe themselves entitled while the rest of the world laughs at their subculture. As for this guy...I saw him around NO when he was a kid. As delusional then as now.

  • @thsmithaudition I'm a little confused - is he saying the trumpet itself will play bang in tune with a good player. Therfore a trumpet out of tune is down to the fault of the player. I would have thought the instrument (make mouthpeice etc) would play its part in intonation - it certainly does wiith saxophones.

  • PREACH IT, BROTHA!

  • What's the point of this?

  • @aWorldCitizen9 A well respected musician publicly joking around while making an educational video. Nothing serious, at all:)

  • So... Wynton played the Predator?

  • The trumpet is not perftectly in tune. There are notes that are out of tune on ALL trumpets. Low D is always sharp, that's what the third valve slide is all about. Note A right above the staff is always sharp, that's why many trumpets have a saddle or a trigger on the first valve slide. There other notes that are slightly out. I don't know if this video was made as a joke, that this is taken out of context or what,

  • I don't think Wynton is known for his out of tune trumpet playing so............?

  • @HorustheAvenger If you notice, he's talking about "the trumpet" not himself, all trumpet's need to be humored to sound in tune. It's the nature of the beast. Anyone who would disagree with that are probably trumpet players that are not familiar with this natural fact and who play out of tune and don't know it.

  • @lanco001 Wynton is no doubt aware of this wouldn't you say? Which would lead me to think that he's being cheeky. It's almost as easy as 1+1.

  • @lanco001 This is not true for guys with really developed and proper chops. If you want examples look at Mendez play, Wynton (though he does use slides for the lower key trumpets), a really good example is Bud Herseth, look at his Mahler 5, doesn't use any tuning slides on C#. I play trumpet, don't need to use slides and yes, it's in tune. Reality is the trumpet is a piece of plumbing, you need to sort of lip each note.

  • 27 people play saxophone.

  • He's right about woodwind players complaining about trumpet players. But, as a clarinet player with lots of experience in wind orchestras, I'd say he's a bit biased and incorrect in his assessment of clarinet players and their tuning. A reasonably good intermediate clarinet player with a good quality clarinet can play in tune. It does require a bit of work though, especially when playing the high pitched notes.

  • Hilarious common knowledge :)

  • Hey, you guys must not be trumpet players! He IS telling the truth. It's hard to find someone playing clarinet in tune!

  • wtf....why would he say something likes this? is he joking or being a dick?

  • Why is this guy always workin' with such a weird southern drawl. Nobody else in his family sounds like that. I guess it must be part of telling the truth.

  • LIKE A BOSS

  • why is the vid so stretchy with the images? like a weird fade rub... lol that of course a trumpet playing friend posted it. nice there SW! heheheh~

  • @Melissajoe816 Good day

...It is one of the "down sides" of DIGITAL video & sound reproduction...if any inconsistent connections ect this pic & crappy "watery" sounds follow.

  • If he could play the trumpet with as much energy that he gives to his vocal cords, he never would have had his recording contract cancelled by Columbia. Didn't mention that, did you Wynton, o my, the savior of "pure jazz" got kicked to the curb by Columbia because he couldn't sell enough albums to justify his 100K retainer. Lost the 100K retainer and lost the contract. Loser.

  • @Bravo6Whiskey man...you're either jealous or simply angry. Either way, show us your contract with Columbia or any contract for any jazz musician today ;)

  • @Bravo6Whiskey Well hmm ever thought that maybe he didn't sell those records because people are just too damn cheap or not interested. it's not like the very little people that actually enjoy jazz will go out and blow 100k he's an amazing player. he tells the truth get over it.

  • was this recorded with a toaster?

  • @utoob4227 nah man, its called a giant rock.

  • @utoob4227 Vid was recorded with a potato, aimed at a dirty mirror, reflecting off of a toaster...

There seems to be a black of focus on this picture show...

  • This is such a funny video xD

  • The only instrument that is always in tune is the guitar. If the strings are a little flat, just bend the strings a little till you have the time to simply raise the tuners.

Wynton is such a troll. But I still love him.

  • @radar10131

Why do you call him a troll? What do you mean?

  • I've always respected Wynton as a practitioner and teacher of American Art Music...until the moment he denigrated Schoenberg.

This conclusively proves that a even Juilliard trained musician is not immune from abject stupidity and artistic myopia.

  • @Easleytee He's just joking. Not everyone has a hammer shoved up there ass 24/7.

  • @Easleytee Schoenberg didn't make music that sounded good. He made music that was mathematically determined. If you made any number of random persons listen to Schoenberg, they would almost all dislike it violently. Atonal and 12 tone music was not created for people to listen to and enjoy. So you can go on and talk about how Wynton denigrated him, but the fact is that most people agree. Furthermore, being discriminant in musical taste is NOT the same as "artistic myopia."

  • @TheRaptorfiend Right on. Most "gimmick" music elicits that reaction ("Let's compose with dice, let's compose with the I-Ching, etc. ad nauseum). It typically attracts frustrated, arty types who want to differentiate themselves from "the masses" and feel intellectually superior. I know because I used to be like that until I realized that Bach and company are indisputable musical giants.

  • hell yeah they are jelous of us!!

  • Damn straight!

  • 24 Woodwinds watched this. hehehe Too Bad.

  • seriously, these are facts. Truth? You wasted 43 seconds of my life.

  • @MrScoodles A woodwind player I take it? :)

  • @DarkforceAngel lol, I'm a former trumpet player.

  • Yeah.... That's not the truth, lol

  • hahahahahahahahahaa

  • 21 people play woodwind :)

  • That's pretty funny :)

  • I For one Play 4 Instruments !!

And My Favorite is Trumpet ! I Agree with everything he says.

  • I see alot of People are getting A Lil "Upset" Because he's telling the truth !

That's why they all jealous of us.

  • He's totally trolling.

  • @EscoBeast LOLOL

  • Actually, no instrument is in tune if it is designed to play any Western genre of music because the scale itself is out of tune by design... that's why pianos have to be tuned "out of tune" to play (relatively) in tune. I'm not sure about other scales (whole-tone etc.) But in any case, he's using humor to get a point across... he undoubtedly knows about the vagaries of the musical scale(s)... he's just trying to get the players to be aware of each other and listen to each other as they play.

  • @rlholo Any instrument that does not have fixed pitches can be perfectly in tune in any system. Trombones, strings can tune to any temperament. Clarinets have quite a bit of flexibility as they are capable of glissandos. Trumpets haave lots of possibilities with alternate fingerings and slide movements, saxes have many alternate fingerings too. Pianos, well ,they're hopeless.

  • lol wow The only pompous comments on this vid are from trumpet players. Why don't we ask Branford what he would have to say in response to this? Ya see, saxophone players don't need to boast because it is just implied that we are so much more above brass players. We don't need to play loud/ shove or blast people out of our way in order to be noticed. We can just be and that is great by itself. You all enjoy your squawk fest. Have fun! lmao that's just ridiculous. Trumpets play out of tune too.

  • Hahaha, I love you Wynton

  • I play clarinet, and i always help tune with the instructor for the rest of the class...all my other friends who play clarinet are usually out of tune though :P...but i agree with about everything he says....but i certainly ain't jealous! XD

  • I play clarinet, and I agree with everything he said.

Except for the jealous part, I'm happy to be a woodwind player who plays the out-of-tune-"you're-just-copying-the-trumpet,-poser" melody. :)

  • This, Made. My. Life.

  • I've never met a woodwind player who didn't complain about reeds.

  • Hey guess what? (Fart...) ^_^

  • HAHAHA I need to show this to my band teacher. Maybe he can educate the rest of the class about us superior trumpet players.

  • "You never see a woodwind player not licking on a reed or playing around or fooling with it and complaining about brass players playing too loud." Oh, that's priceless! That never gets old. Where did clip come from?

  • what a badass!

  • lol the trumpet is only always in tune if that damn slide is pulled out... and the d's and c sharps are never in tune unless u pull it out... this guy is a god though, so im gonna listen to what he says hahaha

  • Hahahahahaha, YEAH!!!!! Marsalis is the man.

  • i play sax. sadly i agree with him. this guy is the man!

  • Amen lol

  • hahahahahah is this real????

  • @NHockerJazz Haha I love this video. Hes so serious too. Show this to all the reed players at Temple lol

  • hmmm im jealous i have to tune aaaaaalways mi guitar .....but i can play chords haha

  • "the only instrument that's always in tune is the trumpet"

    rofl.

  • y're totally right. Just talking the truth...

  • Any negative comments on this vid are from woodwind players....be jealous.....

  • "...and in rare instances, we go ahead and invite our big cousin, the tuba." Rare instances like Marcus Rojas, Dave Bargeron, John Sass, and other tuba dudes and gals who can swing.

  • I love you Wynton

  • well, technically the only instrument thats capable of always being in tune is the trombone

  • Yall don't realize that this is dry humor from Wynton....

  • the only instrument that is allways in tune is the synthesizer.

  • 'the only instrument that is always in tune is the trumpet......... yeah but what about the guy blowin' it?

  • 'the only instrument that is always in tune is the trumpet......... yeah but what about the guy blowin' it?

  • aint that the truth!

  • Wynton Marsalis - You are so full of Shit. Someone call the Milk of Magnesia Lady we've got a catastophic fecal situation goin' down here. Evacuate the area around Lincoln Center.

  • well, well, well....to tell the truth, it´s rather the other way round... playing woodwinds, even when not done with skill, never ever sounds like farting...

can you take any instrument completely seriously, whose sound is created by imitating fart-sounds? ;)

And that bloody loudness: with sax you can play both soft and loud, with trpt it´s just loud.

  • @vulvatronic at least brass doesnt sound like they are having hiccup attacks when played by an amateur.

  • Hahahah hilarious finnaly THE TRUTH =)

  • Gotta love the guys who can only play one note at a time.

  • "that's why they're always jealous of us, never forget that." lol

  • RIGHT ON BROTHER , you tell them pesky woodwind muthafuckas!!

  • Saxes Rule!!!!!! Lol but I do love the trumpet tho lok

  • oh i get it - he has his tongue in his ass cheek.

  • Uh. Drummer's rule. That is all.

  • hehehehe..... I agree, the clarinet is always out of tune..... clarinet = agony stick

  • AGREED !!! I've been preaching this for years, ever since it became clear ... trumpets do all the work and saxes get all the credit. Amen Wynton , amen!

  • @upt123 How can the saxes get all the credit when nobody can hear them because the trumpets are too loud? My trumpet player doesn't even use a mic and everyone says he's still too loud! When we're in the studio he has to play waaaaaayyyy off the mic. The engineer says "no even further back, more, more, go outside and play"

  • :O woodwinds are better! Lol the clarinet is the best!

  • he sholl know wat to say!!!!

  • this vieo used to be clear. what up? it keeps getting off track.

  • Don't let him fool yah, the woodwinds rule.

  • Anyone know where i can find this video with better quality?

  • TRUTH!

  • LMAO never seen this comedic side of wynton b4...

  • I don't think Wynton ment anything mean at all to players of woodwind instruments. I think its just a joke. This guy has an appreciation for everything musical.

  • Please somebody could write all that he says. I have trouble understanding everithing, but if i see it wrote. I will understand. i know its long but please!!

  • @gusgus80

The horns are separated into two families, the noble brass, and woodwinds.

Now brass intruments are all made of metal, and can be played very powerfully.

The woodwind instruments, with the exception of the clarinet, are also made of metal, but their sound is produced by blowing on wooden reeds.

Now you never see a woodwind player not licking on a reed or playing around and fooling with it, and complaining about brass players playing too loud.

  • @gusgus80

Now is the opportunity for us to tell them for once and for all: 'Too bad'.

Now the brass family in a big band includes the trumpets and the trombones, and in rare instances we go ahead and invite our big cousin: the tuba.

The woodwinds, the woodwinds are comprised of three types of saxophones and the clarinets, sometimes the flute is even thrown in there for good luck.

  • @gusgus80

Now lets not forget about the clarinet, they're always out of tune, and the clarinet accompanies the trumpet from above, in the higher register.

The only instrument that's always in tune, is the trumpet, let's not forget that, it's very important to realise. That's why they're all jealous of us.

  • lol the only instrument that is always in tune is the trumpet.... so great.

  • haha, subtle

  • trumpets always in tune?? pshhhh. he should speak for himself

  • @questionful

    maybie this is he's style....

  • It's the duty of every trumpet player to remind every other section of how inferior they are.

    Good job Wynton.

  • too bad woodwinds sound INFINITELY more pleasant than any trumpet

  • @nepalnt21 You best be trolling...

  • If you like the sound of quiet, soul-less buzzing as created by hundreds of ugly girls and a few gay guys...

If that's what you define as sounding pleasant, then I suppose so.

  • @nepalnt21 Ha Ha Ha That's funny!! Ha Ha Ha... etc

  • oh i remember the days of playing trumpet in the back row waiting for everyone else to tune up

  • 1)Piano can be out of tune

2)He is a trumpet player! At least he acknowledged the saxophone!

    3) Saxes are meant to add a little spice, not "give the soul and color to all other sounds".

    4) Trumpets sound better than "The most gorgeous sound".

  • Amen.

  • Funny Stuff...

  • Hahahahaha

  • That's why they are all jealous of us !!!

  • @gotstrongdotcom

he sounds like such a scared little man

  • TRUMPET HEAD WYNTON

  • GASP!!! :O Do NOT talk bad about the clarinet!! >:-(

  • Lmao I love this guy

  • heh, "They's always outta tune..."

  • @DeathBrand not all the time some of them just straight up suck

  • @DeathBrand He's clearly saying, "They are always out of tune," btw

  • @zamerican59 Actually, Wynton speaks in Ebonics, so DeathBrand is right.

  • AMEN

  • lmao woo!

  • lol, this is so funny, its true, this is something i would show 6th graders just starting

  • I FUCKING MET WYNTON MARSALIS AND I PLAY THE TRUMPET TOO!!!!!! he told me to keep playing the trumpet and that one day i might become famous if i practice. And now i practice a ton!

  • Oh, that's cute -- funny! Thanks for sharing it TrumpetLass.

  • Yes!

  • OMG THANKYOU

ive been trying to get this point across in my high school band this whole year

  • He is awesome.

  • omg this quality glich looks like some sort of censorship :D

  • It censors his awesome. It cannot be looked upon by mortal eyes.

  • THE TRUTH BROTHA!

  • Cute. He is a funny guy. Too bad he never played with Kenny Davern... Wynton might have switched to clarinet. ;-)

  • He makes us trumpet players proud to be trumpet players.

  • "Too bad" LOL! YES!!!

  • Spoken like a true trumpet player!!!

  • Haha, he's funny.

  • I wonder how Branford would comment this :D

  • I love hearing good Trumpet players talk. It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside ;-)

  • @kdods22402 that's b/c you're a fag and want Winton to shove his trumpet 10 inches up your faggot ass

  • @Wahpinga Suck my DICK you cock-ass piece of shit. Maybe you should get a degree in ANYTHING before you open your goddamn mouth, you fuckin' ass.

  • He's joking, right? (bout the intonation issues) I like his playing but Wynton kind of comes off as a douche when he opens his yap.
