starmaster191, the reason they looked like complete dumbasses is because they were just that. The "documentary" didn't tell the half of it. The Kims ignored four separate warning signs, a verbal warning at a tourist information center, a warning on the highway map, and the weather. She lied about being asleep, and about what happened when they reached the fork in the road. Too bad the fella died, but if Kati Kim is looking for someone to blame she should step in front of a mirror.
Kati Kim's story is full of holes. She and her husband took that route on purpose. They selfishly endangered themselves and their young kidds, and then she tried to cash in on his death. The idiots never should have been there to begin with. They ignored half a dozen warnings, and then she lied to investigators and the gullible TV crew that produced the shoddy "documentary" tear-jerker. People need to take responsibility for their own mistakes, starting with her.
Also just watched it on animal planet. In my opinion the way they portrayed him and his wife on the reenactment made them look like complete dumbasses. The way Kim kept talking made her see like she was dumb and stupid.
Just saw the kims story on animal planet! Such tragedy for the family! Im a father of three girls and just the feeling of not being there for my girls just kills me! James did he's best heroic effort to rescue his family and for that, in my book he will always be a hero...rest in peace +James Kim+
@Joe90289 Hey everyone don't worry about Joe. Hey Joe, I have a really good suggestion for you. Well here it is :) Have you ever fired a gun before? If you have, I highly suggest you buy a .50 cal.. Then all you have to do is point it at your head, preferably up into your neck - then pull the trigger :)
I live in Western Oregon, in the middle of two huge tragedies seperated by two weeks in December; one being James Kim, the other were the 3 Mt. Hood climbers killed about a month ago. We need to address the lack of protocol needed to keep people safe. Nobody should be climbing Mt. Hood in the Winter, it's suicide. James Kim was a hero for using every possible resource he had, and braving the elements to save his family. RIP.
seriously, when I went to CNET to check on how James was doing, when they were searching for him, I saw it says James Kim 1971-2006, I was like, "no....not him, why him? he's gone..."
Just saw the news about James Kim in the latest Newsweek. Ashamed I hadn't realized sooner...I watched quite a few of his reviews on CNET.
A good man.
People can second-guess the family's planning and decisionmaking all they want...he stayed with his family for nine days before setting out to try something else. The only thing that we can all do now is to try to learn from his example.
Nice tribute...very sad story. I hope they find out who broke the lock on those gates blocking that mountain road. Oregon needs to get their act together and do something about their roads in the winter!
I used to watch him on Tech TV years ago and was very impressed with his knowledge. Seemed like a really nice guy. I'm truly saddened by his passing....
What a tragic loss! If only he had a small, portable Ham Radio (Amateur Radio) transceiver. He could have called for help, and relayed the general area he was stuck in. Many stranded or lost people with Ham Radios have obtained help this way. A small setup with a wire antenna fits in a briefcase!
James Kim died as a hero trying to save his family. RIP.
For anyone else with a family who travels in winter, or in mountains, consider getting a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon). About the size of a deck of cards, it will sit in your glovebox for 11 years on a single battery, and when you activate it, will transmit your exact GPS coordinates via satellite to NOAA, and they will (24x7) notify the local Search and Rescue authorities with your position. 600 bucks. Google "PLB".
A beautiful, thoughtful tribute to a brave daddy and husband. We were swept up in the story of their stranding, and heartbroken when James didn't make it. Thank you for bringing him to life for us -- it's clear he had much joy in the life he lived. Condolences to all who loved him.

Too bad the guy and his wife didn't have a shred of common sense. They both deserve the Darwin Award for their backwoods stunt.
