Look at the kids in these residential schools and compare them to the Indian children running around the streets of our cities today. The Indian kids in the residential schools are very well feed and taken care off. Each one of them had a bed to sleep on, they wore clean cloths, they were disciplined they attended classes and got an education. Indian kids today and back then, lived in over cowed dirty houses, without heat and adults drunk or stoned 24/7.
Indians never had a family structure, in most cases it was the grandmother or great grandmother who looked after the children because the mother was too young to raise children and she was still playing with dolls. Indians never did have father, grandfathers or great grandfathers because the mother was too young when she first had sex and she had sex with a lot of different men not boys because it was the older men who molested little girls and got them pregnant.
I'm Asian but I have the utmost respect for native peoples and support the Indian struggle for justice and sovereignty. My grandparents were interned in camps by the us govt. during WW2. What happened to these people was far more tragic but I can feel for u 100%

I'm from the Turtle Mountain Reservation in North Dakota. I heard about this film through Where the Spirit Lives which brought me here. It reminded me of asking my Grandfather. He was a quiet man who had been in the war. That didn't bother him. When I asked him about boarding school he started crying. My Grandma told me he still had trouble talking about it. this is extremely sad..the first time I watched in my history class, it made me feel so depressed honestly..it was hard to bear watching a grown man cry in this manner.

Look at the kids in these residential schools and compare them to the Indian children running around the streets of our cities today. The Indian kids in the residential schools are very well feed and taken care off. Each one of them had a bed to sleep on, they wore clean cloths, they were disciplined they attended classes and got an education. Indian kids today and back then, lived in over cowed dirty houses, without heat and adults drunk or stoned 24/7.

I knew these things happened in the boarding schools---this, and worse. I did not know it went on into the sixties and seventies.
Odawa friends speak very bitterly of not only the schools, but the things that happened to the children when they were sent out to the farms to work during the summer.
This is a tragedy that needs to be addressed. An apology is the very least that should be done.

I'm from the Turtle Mountain Reservation in North Dakota. I heard about this film through Where the Spirit Lives which brought me here. It reminded me of asking my Grandfather. He was a quiet man who had been in the war. That didn't bother him. When I asked him about boarding school he started crying. My Grandma told me he still had trouble talking about it. I was born with the gift of healing and seeing and communicating with spirits. Like my mother and grandmother. I also can see that at least one of my kids will have the same gift. While having the intrinsic gift I had to practice spiritual healing and learn about healing powers of herbs. Once I saved an oldtimer from dying. He had had two nitro pills but no help to his cardiac pain. I healed him and in five to ten minutes he was up and fine again. (He couldn't understand it...)

This breaks my heart! My great Grandmother was Native American. I wish I would have known her. My Grandmother was Half Native American. I wish that she would have taught me more about her heritage. I have always been fascinated with the TRUE AMERICANS!

It was extreme ignorance and arrogance that caused this situation. These qualities still exist in abundance and if you look at the political situation, you can see it. It is a terrible shame. I hope the people who endured these hardships will be able to find themselves and connect with their spirits again. There is still a lot of absence of love in the world but there is more love than lack of it.

My momma was raised in her young years on the Quinault Reservation. I remember my momma saying I hate white eyes...and I grew to hate white mans ways.

It amazes me how conveniently this part of history was hidden from so many for so long. So much bad has come out in the name of God, as they use him to cloak such violence against people. It is easy to see how mean man can be that has no knowledge or heritage to call their own. You and many of your people had to endure more than any man should and yet there is a kindness in your voice. May your pain fade with the knowledge that no one escapes the judgment day. I am British, and, (because they aint no better than america) Im ashamed to be! I wish i was anything but british, american or canadian. I didnt watch the Royal Wedding niether. I had a bath! Out of respect for those in iraq in this terrible war, being blown to bits, while we are all drooling over some bit of a frock, some interbred might be wearing on her wedding day. Why they couldnt find it in their hearts out of sheer respect to just hold on for their big day i dont know?

This makes me sad..... The boarding school era always reminds me of Matthew 7:15. I think it angers Wa.ko^.da for what those people did to our Native ancestors. Wa.ko^.da gave us our culture & language as gifts! Like Sitting Bull said, "God made me an Indian." I'll be praying for Mr. Windyboy....

I don't even see anger in this man.. Only sadness. It doesn't seem like he wants people to pay a price for what he went through, he just wants back what he lost or what was taken away from him.
