In my youth in 1983-1995, we all rode on the sidewalk like were supposed to because riding in the street was much more dangerous.
We now have dozens of multi-million dollar bike paths, bike lanes everywhere, etc. They never abide by traffic laws, and it's open season around here. Had over 20 bike fatalites this summer alone.

@ChromiumSilver 4 deaths a year, while that IS a sad occurrence in any city...is far less than the number your city (or any, I bet) has had occur between two motor vehicle drivers. Why should someone be discouraged from commuting via bikes simply because someone decides to simply not pay attention? You can be killed riding your bike just as you could riding in your car, or a friends car. I don't advocate cyclists who do not stop at lights, run stop signs, and do not follow traffic laws.

It's simple dude. Where I live, bike lanes are actually hurting riders. This is the most progressive bike city there is in the states. Were way ahead of you on bike development for our roads and yet so many lives lost.

actually to all of you who think that bicycles aren't allowed on the "main road" then you are wrong, anybody on a bicycle riding on the road are meant to be on the edge of the road and if you are in a group of 4 or more you can take up an entire lane. SIDEWALKS are meant for people, bicycles are considered vehicles.

@TheDoogee Check the law, it says, When ridden on any roadway a bicycle rider has all of the rights and responsibilities of any vehicle (RCW 46.61.755). Unless bicycles are specifically excepted, all traffic laws and rules apply to bicycles. Bicyclists who violate traffic laws are subject to a citation.
Just like car/truck drivers cyclists have rights to ride on the roadway just like any other vehicle, motor or not.
When you strike or threaten to strike a cyclist you will receive jail time.
