  • this shit ain't ska. he even said it himself. there is no genre that defines them

  • its could even be a new genre! CLASSIC SKA

  • i wanna go out right now and kick everybody in the face

  • Yo. this song just made me cry.

  • Im such a hopeless romantic

But they failed to mention what Id be fighting for

    So I fight for this:

The fact that as I pass away, Ill feel her kiss (INSERT CRYING)

When I smile, what a wonderful life

  • That's not even the same song...

  • lmao. opps. my bad my bad.

  • Comment removed

  • This is the same singer as in Streetlight Manifesto

  • It's almost entirely the same band.

  • Not really, They added like 15 more people for different parts.

  • your fucking dumb

  • Yeah, but its also all Acoustic.

  • nooooooo BOTAR is more foucused on the acoustic and classical style of ska

  • the piano part about made me cry it was so pretty.

how do i not own this cd???

  • wow you're a douche bag.

sorry that i thought the piano line, no matter how simple, was rather pretty.

What kindof asshole tells people to kill them selves for saying 'about made me cry'?

if you think that's a reason for someone to end their life, not only are you an idiot, you are ignorant to the real problems of this world.

so i suggest shutting your dumb ass up if you're just going to criticize, because it's not appreciated, and in the meantime you only make yourself look and sound stupid

  • Yeah, "simple" doesn't necessarily mean "bad." Honestly, I find that musicians often sacrifice melody and listenability for technicality. Yes, there are exceptions, but more often than not, this seems to be the case. Take Amon Amarth's "Valhal Awaits Me" for example. About 53 seconds in, they guitars, bass, and bass drums play straight 16th notes, and yet I find that to be an incredibly powerful piece of music.

But hey, these are just my opinions, so you probably don't really care.

  • it's good. But whenever i hear this stuff i feel like its just a vamp into an actual streetlight song. it almost has an empty feeling.

i guess i like the idea of BotAR better than the outcome. Even though it's still genius music.

  • the gang vocals are easier to hear. i like this version and SM's. the violins are a nice touch as well

  • Eh, they are both great versions of the song. I prefer the BotAR on for obvious reasons. I would have also preferred Catch 22 stay together long enough to official release their version.

  • IMO the lack of bass makes me prefer the Streetlight version.

  • There's an upright bass.

  • Of course, and it's not loud enough, which why I said "the lack of bass".

  • I hear plenty of bass. You just don't have an ear for upright bass.

  • Nah i figured out the problem, the bass drum drowns out the upright bass on my crappy speakers, my AKG's fixed that problem though (:

  • lol I've played upright bass for four years now and I don't hear it. XD

  • haha, ive been playing both electric and upright for a while now

IMO they should bowed the shit out of the upright for this song. its far too quiet

  • True dat man, I'd love to cover this song but I cant hear the bass!! :( I hope I can see them in concert and they play this song, I would record the bassist the whole show haha :D

  • i think unless you can hear a pin drop from a mile away, you cant hear the bass

  • ok i just completely listened to this version of the song, after only loving streetlights.... and now i dont know wich one i like more. like this is the orginal and it has soooo much music in it and its so good......but streetlights has soo much more...uum....uhh manifesto! its like a different feel to the song....i just cant choose. fuck who cares i like em both now.

  • The Streetlight version of Here's to Life is nothing compared to this version. BOTAR FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!

  • hey theres this bad ass site ALL about tomas kalnokys bands and it has videos, pictures, and forums and shit... the only problem is theres only 3 people who joined... so can you please join it would mean everything, you dont have to pay or anything....the site address is in my comments on my channel, just click "alwaysblinkin182" and go to my comments you cant miss it thank you

  • but one of my favorite songs in the world.

  • Me 2!

  • And yeah that is definitely a viola.

  • its a viola cause you cant play that low on a violin and that high on a cello, and i thought that streetlight came first, cause isnt the singer of streetlight the founder of bandits?

  • Streetlight was started as a side project to Bandits.

  • Actually, BOTAR was a side project which included members from Streetlight Manifesto, and Catch 22 as a project that was held when they were touring with Catch 22 and another band.

  • No, it wasn't. BOTAR put out their EP in 2001, Streetlight wasn't formed till 2002. Kalnoky left Catch 22 in 1999.

  • Oops, my bad, I stand corrected. Either way BOTAR, and all the Ska band in it are pretty good. I like this version better than the electronic one by Streetlight.

  • Yeah, Bandits came first with Here's To Life and then Tomas decided to rerecord it with Streetlight Manifesto on their first album.

  • dammit i'm confused bandits or catch 22 which came first, I know streetlight was the latest and I like them the best but catch and bandits are awesome as well.

  • Gimp was first, then Catch 22, then Bandits, then Streetlight.

  • is there a violin in there? sounds like it

  • I think its a viola or cello.

  • 1:35 sounds like a violin but i cant differentiate between a viola and violin with my ears. also 2:20

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah, Tomas's brother, Acilles plays the violin, and there's a viola

  • one of the greatest songs i ever heard. FANTASTIC!

  • This is probably my second favorite song off of Everything Goes Numb, and the cover is awesome.

  • In my opinion, this is way better than streetlights version. :)

  • lyrics are way more pronounced on this version

  • I love streetlight

    but this version kicks ass

  • nice :)

  • And it makes me sick when I think of it,

All my heroes could not live with this,

And I hope you rest in peace because, with us you never did.

And K.D.C. you were much too young,

    And you changed my life,

But I draw the line at suicide,

    So here's to life!!!

  • who was K.D.C.?

  • kurt donald cobain

  • Kurt David Cobain

  • dude its deffinatly donald google it

  • you're so right :D

    kurt donald cobain

    NOT david. ;-)

  • no its david

  • i think he made it sound ''rushed'' in streetlights version because thomas wanted streetlight to have a fast feel

  • lol

in an arguement for genre of this band, maybe someone should ask them

i talked to the trumpet player after the show in Toronto this year and he simply stated "My favourite type of music is the kind that crosses boundaries. We try our best to break down the barrier between ska and jazz"

    Tadaa, its Ska-Jazz.

  • Tomas says Streetlight redid Keasbey Knights because he wasn't happy with the way it sounded with Catch 22. And he felt with Streetlight they could better capture the sound he was trying to create. As for Here's To Life, I don't know why, but at least he changed it up a little.

  • I love street light but he re made sergio 3 times though thats a little lame I love the keasbay remake but why did he have to do it a 3rd time

  • The first was rough and full of energy.

The second was redone more poetic, with an added verse.

The third was kicked up a notch, redone with masterful horn work and cleaner guitar, and made to sound like the more impeccable, musical version of the song that Tomas had striven for.

  • Who's that other singer at 3:28

  • Uhh, let me check...

It's either Rachel Goldstein or Natalia Ushak. Not sure which; either way, thank you wikipedia.

  • There's no possibility of getting the file for this song or any of the other ones from the EP would there? =\

  • Download it from The Pirate Bay. if you have bit torrent the EP has like 16 seeds right now.

  • i think i like this version a little better because it is slower i dont think it was meant to be as fast as sm's version and this one was a little more creative with the instrument use and everything

  • i think the best version is SM's live version..

  • In my opinion.

They're both equally awesome, it just depends on your preferences.

  • best music in the world: slm botar c22

  • omg this song is so awesome in all its versions, al have differernt things that work :D

omg tomas kalnoky is so awesome :)

  • this song is okay by botar but the best by sm....it just sounds better from sm

  • Wrong. It so much better by BOTAR.

  • how can an opinion be wrong?

  • if you can't back it up with facts it can be very easily disproven with opposing logic/opposing facts, therefore making it wrong by definition.

  • but its his opinion thats a fact people can like whatwver they want thats another fact

  • lol imaretard great name

  • your opinion but S.M. actually sounds rushed in that song and this band actually put emotion in this song but thats my opinion

  • I don't know. I think this is too convoluted, and it sounds too .. smooth, I guess.

  • i love this song! :D

  • you should of put both the intro and this together so it would be fucking epic

  • Comment removed

  • I love BOTAR =] and catch 22 and streetlight are good also =]

  • by far their best attempt

    this has everything

  • OMG I think I just came all over my computer screen that was absolutely gorgeous I am an enormous SLM supporter but that just blew them out of the water!!!!!

  • This is totally awesome! Favorited, 5 stars.

  • Wow. Very unique song.

  • I like streetlight's better but this is still a good version

  • haha grossman81 you're my hero!

    No one else got that.

  • Sooo much better than the streetlight version and i am absolutely in love with streetlight.

I also love that piano bit.

  • I like this version so much more than streetlight's. (That's saying a lot, as I am in love with streetlight)

  • I love that piano bit.

  • me too, so much. just had to learn it =)

  • I like this version better than the Streetlight version, I think it's better slower and they changed the lyrics in the Streetlight version and took out some good lines. Also I like the piano better than the clarinet. The only thing I prefer about the Streetlight version is the ending.

  • by this man I mean yamiam

  • Gotta say, I like the Streetlight version just a little bit better, but the song kicks ass both ways!

  • Skacore

    Snowcore

    Hardcore

    Homocore

    Albacore

haha sorry. the labels make me giggle.

Imo Tomas's music is magic...no matter who he might be standing in front of!!

  • I can't take it anymore!

  • This is my favorite version of the song.

  • mine too.

  • why do people insist on putting labels on everything? cant you just enjoy the music for what it is? If you like it you like it if you don't, then you don't its as simple as that. Don't bother getting worked up about an argument that can never be won. Just sit back and let more simple minded people say its "ska" or "third wave" or whatever else they might try to do to oversimplify something so grand just....chill and let the music do its job and be pleasurable

  • this man, right here. He speaks the truth.

  • I'm a streetlight fan, but this is really great too. All good music.

  • you are all retards. streetlight isn't ska. tomas himself has said it many times. they have their own unique style, which doesn't really fit into any existing genre or subgenre. if you want to call them fourth wave, go ahead. if you wanna call em third wave go ahead, but don't come here spewing your ignorance at everyone else.

  • like it more than the version by streetlight

  • Everyone needs to chill the fuck out... Sub-genres are so flawed it makes it hard to distinct what goes where... All you people sound like is those bitches whining about whether Cradle of Filth or Children Of Bodom are Death Metal or Black Metal

  • Like streetlights vers better

  • haha this fourth wave argument is too funny, look at it this way- streetlight has a distinct style that many consider the fourth wave but in reality i think theyre still the third wave. Its a matter of opinion and how u view things you cant say concretely that they are or arent the fourth wave

  • I thought you were gonna say its all just words used to describe something that doesn't exist. Then you go and say that they are a "wave". They are a band, they don't fall into any of this bollocks. They are Kalnoky wave if anything, because they are just one of those bands that noone else in the world sounds like.

  • i concur

  • wow B.O.T.A.R's 2:51 - 3:57 I thought was a lot better then Streetlight's. it's slower and also added a female's vocals to give it a melancholy feel. incredible!!!

  • hail yea that part fuckin bows sLm out of the water!!!!

  • ha botar definately does out bow streetlight

  • dude its the same band

  • Tomas is the Shit!

  • there wont be no 4th wave if you think in that mindset. we gata bring it back

  • What mindset?

  • most people i know dont know about ska. we need to raise awareness if theres gonna be a 4th wave.

  • i thought we were still in the 3rd wave?

  • Bands like Streetlight Manifesto are considered to be the 4th wave.

  • Not true. Check wikipedia.

  • What are we supposed to be checking?

  • everybody can change wikipedia so maybe you should have an opinion for your own

  • this drummer (i think hes in catch 22 and streetlight too, i dont know) is bloody good

  • yeah all three of these bands are the same, dude

  • Streetlight manifesto!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • There is no 4th wave of ska

There are plenty of sub genres

    But no 4th wave

  • not bad... not as upbeat or fast-paced(?) as streetlights... but still freakin awesome! yeah botar!

  • wow, BOTAR's version of this is amazing

  • This "version" was the first and then Tomas used this in Streetlight Manifesto too -- isn't it an awesome song??

  • The streetlight version is different.

  • thats cause this is BOTAR, the lyrics are the same except for the refrain. this was acctually the original, A Call To Arms came out post Catch 22 but pre Streetlight Manifesto

  • I think this will just be called 4th wave Ska.

  • No, I don't think it will

  • I've actually heard this called Gypsy Punk...which makes the most sense considering the Punk/Classical/Eastern European influences

  • Yeah, that would make sense, given Kalnoky's from Chec Republic lol.

  • that just wouldnt make sence if you consider that Gipsys originate from Romenia not eastern europe itself. i'd rather call it slavic-skapunk or something like that.

  • well, i think it will

  • Nah...the 4th wave is made up of solo-ska. Guys like Dan Potthast.

  • it is decent quality

and i dont think that them doing streetlight/catch22 songs is good idea

    because they lose the intensity

they need that electric sound to keep the intensity, plus more brass.

but if the kept doing songs like "they provide the paint" theyll become successful

  • Um no.......it was done my them first and it is the same singer. He has just resung many of his song from BoTAR in Catch and Streetlight.

  • o thanks!

  • ya sure. OMG we are both 92's. Is that when you were born???

  • lol yeah

    you?

  • yup. memories of the 90s are so much better then the 2000's. Plus Ska became popular again in the 90's.

  • lol another 92, and yeah ur right bout botar, they were one of the 1st bands from kalnoky ^^ + they pwn this song better than SM

  • Actually BOTAR is Kalnoky's third band. First was Gimp which was a three part punk band that released one EP when Kalnoky was 15, the second Catch 22 which he released an EP an album(Keasbey Nights) with before leaving the band. In 2001 Kalnoky went on to release this. The song Here's to life was re-worked and re-released on the Streetlight Manifesto EP and there first album( Everything Went Numb).

  • yeahm i know, i just meant that it was before SM mate...note the wording

  • woah this is really good. i thought it would be pretty shitty quality or sound weired but this is great. great song.

  • Why would it be bad quality?

  • idk like i thought BOTAR was like be4 catch 22 and on cassettes but then i reallized i was thinking of gimp. but yeah this came after catch and be4 streetlight.

  • I just went to look for the lyrics to this... And everything Kalnoky has ever been involved in has had real meaning to it. I love him for it.

  • wow, i thought BOTAR was just a little band that led Kalnoky into joining catch and eventually Streetlight. man i gotta brush up on my history. hahah, hey, does anyone know if he recorded this with another of his bands beside BOTAR and Streetlight? Thanks

  • Nah.. GIMP led him to catch, which he left for College, then he started BOTAR, and Streetlight as a side project.

  • oh, thanks for clearin that up, man. appreciate it

  • I love this version of this song....its waaaayyy better than streetlight's

  • I like them both the same.

  • Hey, Tomas Kalnoky (A God of ska) was behind both of them. I hope you feel like an asshole, waving around your ska-poser opinions.

  • haha seriously <3

  • You go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • DO YOU NOT KNOW ANYTHING?!?!?!?!?!? These "schmucks" include tomas kalnoky! I bet your not even a big enough streetlight fan to even know who he is!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, appearently, he decided to do it with BOTAR too. So, basicly, your criticizing streetlight!!!!

  • hehe what a douche, but actually he decided to do it with Streetlight, BOTAR was first.

  • You know this pretty much IS streetlight right? Streetlight was this bands sideproject.

  • Steve knows nothing...

  • "Hemingway never seemed to mind the banality of a normal life

and I find, it gets harder every time

So he aimed the shotgun into the blue

Placed his face in between the two

    and sighed, "Here's To Life!"

    amazing song, lyrics and music

  • ..2..3..4!! Three went down!

I fuckin love that fill right after the interlude man, simple but fucking beautiful yo!

  • this is good but i still like SM better

  • wait i thought this was streetlight manifesto?

  • Its originally by BOTAR, but Kalnoky is in both bands.

  • kalnoky has recorded this song in every band he's been in

  • wow... the lead sounds like the lead singer from SLM. SLM is the best ska band ever though!! Along with RBF!! Love those two! These guys are good aswell though :P

  • the lead singer is Tomas Kalnoky, ex Singer of Catch 22, and current singer of BOTAR and SLM.
