@georgecain123 it was over two years ago but I do believe it was at least 37 inches directly centered over the snare. No more than 43 inches. Two Peluso CEMC6 SDCs. Tnx 4 your inquiries.
@crunchyballs yeah I know- it was a mono file when I posted but then Youtube changed it's formatting and it appeared as a stereo track all of a sudden. Sums to mono well though. Cheers
They did upload this two years ago, long before Youtube gave you the chance as to what quality you viewed this as. So I'm sure originally, this was mono :P
Are you using one mic? Cause that sounds fucking amazing. If it IS one, can you tell me what ind of mic it is? I'm getting one in 4 days and I want to get a really good one.
well, the Glyn Johns method of recording utilizes 4 mics. one on the snare, one on the kick, and two overheads. one overhead over the kit, and one to the side, near the floor tom. get on google and look up "the glyn johns method" you will find tons of information on this and most of the articles and write-ups have some mic suggestions. as well as other equipment you will need for a recording.
If you're doing the Glyn Johns thing, shouldn't there be a mic six-or-so inches above the floor tom, pointed at the hi-hat? Either way, this configuration has been amazing for me in the past.
If you look over my left shoulder you'll see that mic. Slightly different from the "Internet says" version b/c I'm using SDCs in a small room/low ceiling. Still the same ditance form the kit but but behind the kit instead of on the side.
These are actually the Taye heads that come stock! I was pleasantly shocked how good the stock heads were AND the heads were over a year and half old when I made this recording. Single ply coated - similar to Remo Ambassadors. The maple shells are awesome - hit you in the gut when you smack em!
Glyn Johns you can Hear His Genius in Steve Miller Band early On.

How high was your mic above the snare? did you place it directly above the snare or directly above the kick pedal? you used peluso sdc mics?

@wasteoidzombie No, it is, did you hear it when his sticks hit together on a low/high tom roll? They clicked at the same time. Mono.

Keith Moon played with The Who. John Bohnam was Zep's drummer.
Thanks for digging my drum sound - learned a lot about recording with these tests.
No mixer on these tests, just a True Systems Precision 8 into an RME Fireface 800,

Keith Moon?, don't you mean John Bonham?

For this video it was the stock heads that came with the kit. Taye single-ply coated.

i suggest putting the mic 6 inches above the drums on a pillow so it wont catch vibrations
