Love the major 3rd drop in the second bar with the coorsponding melodic sequence. C maj to Ab major in the first 2 bars....very odd and not something heard that often in this bag.
As usual, a nice professional, performance by Vallee's group. Cool stuff.
THIS IS A GREAT TUNE I JUST HAD TO CHECK AGAIN HOW MUCH 395.00 DOLLARS IN 1928 WOULD BE WORTH TODAY . IN OUR MONEY IT WOULD BE 4,950.00 MY GOD . THANKS
$395 DOLLARS IN THE 20'S WAS A FORTUNE , A MODEL T CAR COST ABOUT 300.00 , SO A RACCOON COAT COST MORE THAN A CAR , WOW IT WAS REALLY A STATUS SYMBOL I CAN SEE WHY ONLY COLLEGE BOYS COULD AFFORD IT THANK YOU WONDERFUL
Billy Murray did an excellent version of this on electric Edison diamond disc, much faster with lots of banter and swagger throughout. The backup band was "The 7 Blue Babies" which I believe were the California Ramblers....
Olsen is particularly interesting instrumentally, I agree, this instrumentation being somewhat too timid; yet I don't dislike at all Vallée's vocal. I guess after I'd prefer this vocal with Olsen's instrumentation in all its beauty.
I am not American, but Austrian, which means my native language is German. I know the two songs you mentioned, but I bet many US songs weren't really more meaningful. Unlike your parents, I do not condemn this song genre as mere junk. I rather appreciate it as a typical, sometimes artistically unique period phenomenon that was obviously influenced by the 1920s Dada tide. Did you know that in Germany they even released a purposely stupid dadaistic Fox Trot?
@Stompy23 If someone's parents think this is junk they must be Victorian! This is so much better than modern pop! Modern people don't like it because it's dated, and old-minded people think it's uncivilised, etc, but anyone past their prime from 1890 think its too good and smart, plus old to listen to.
R. Vallee was one of my parents' favorite performers. My father even wore his hair in that style. I love those old college songs, including Yale's "boola-boola"--sheer nonsense-- like the racoon dance.
One of those perky "Animal Dances" of the 20's. Love these raccoon coats. the problem is: if I wore one I WILL look like a raccoon, unlike these models.
this is really a silly song but it is fun to hear is sung by the orginal band and singer. good thing you have a copy with such good sound quality. thanks for this it.
George Olsen also had a great version, I have both this and his listed on my channel

LOVE THAT 1920s music. And I was born so years later in the 1950s! They were lucky not to have animal rights fanatics in the "Roaring Twenties"!

This has got to be one of the fattest most decadent pieces I've ever heard. A camp classic! Thanks.

This seems to be an American equivalent to German 1920s nonsense songs like "In Surabaya" or "Ja bei den Hottentotten" ... really cute recording!
