i think if u would've just dragged a big stick u wouldve saved yourself a shoe full of dirt plus got a straighter line..as for the deer try putting up a little fence next time around the whole thing to keep them out...look like u have pretty decent soil, tho..with mine i have clay and rock so it would need rototilling w/adding soil amendments to make it looser so it would drain well.
