Mat great vid, and responses to others also provides more help. With tumbling, my ? is where does one stop running the tumbler? Will the gem stones wear away also when tumbling, that if you tumble a handful of gems at the same time.
@MnLare : you run it on a time schedule, usually 7 days for each grit, then polish. The gemstones do indeed wear while tumbling, so you wouldn't want to tumble anything you wanted to remain a "natural" specimen - the wearing is what removes the outer layer so we can see inside better. Tumbling a handful in a large container would be detrimental (to much breakage), by ordering a tumbler with the smaller barrels they are more readily filled to the 3/4 recommended and tumble like gemstones only.
@janisleuk : Mrs. Mattson is going to do that (and more) on another video - we were long on this video and had to drop some of what we wanted to do. We'll get to it soon though. Cheers to you!
Thanks Mat. Here in Spain we don't have any rockhound guides/gemtrail books like the ones in your video or a geological service to go to for ideas on where to start. Locally we have Palaeozoic and Mesozoic rocks. I understand you are on the other side of the world but do you have any ideas for where we might find more info on where to go prospecting here or should we just buy lots of maps? The Andalucian gold-panners association is now defunct as far as I know.
@sengmand : I think the key to success then is in study of the past: plug JSTOR The Journal of Roman Studies into your search and/or Roman Gold-Mining in North-West Spain. One of the key passages: " . . . most of the sites lie either in or close to river beds, particularly those of the Sil, Duerna, Narcea, the Narvia, and their respective tributaries . . ." I'd read all of that (since these fields supplied the bulk of Roman gold) and go from their - best of luck in your search!
Nice gold and great information. I dredge in Idaho, we have a good time doing it. I have a wetsuit heater product made for anyone who wants to dredge in cold water. The video is made by NewportStudio or type rockyjaphet in the search box.
Great resources! This would be a great article for Temerity Magazine! If you can get something together by Oct. 20th, I would be proud to have you in November's Temerity Magazine! Thanks for posting this video! Had to favorite it!
@GrizzlyGroundswell : checked it out this morning, what a great magazine you have going there, everyone reading this reply should check it out: prospecting, treasure hunting, meteorites, gems are all covered. Thanks for the invite, the 20th would be tight for the kind of quality I'd want, I used to write for Florida Grower & Rancher in the 80's. Thanks again and very best of luck with the magazine!
@flagold Hey that is great! I extended the submission deadline to Oct. 25 if that helps! It would be great if you just did a short resources list article with all the great resources you had in this video. But if life is too busy right now, Temerity Magazine will be back in 2012 with at least 4 issues, maybe more if I can add the special interest issues I am planning as well. Thanks for the great video and let's get you into Temerity Magazine either now or in the future!
Awesome video. thanks!
