Well, when asked to talk about the reputation of and mythology surrounding the White Shark, you can hardly AVOID mentioning Jaws. None of these people said it was an accurate representation.
The great white shark is considered an apex predator (together with orcas) regardless of the fact that orcas sometimes (rarely) kill them. In the most famous incident of an orca killing a great white, the shark was sub adult in any case.
"Although their diets overlap greatly, great whites do not seem to directly compete with orcas and there are few reports of encounters between them."
@ThrashRattleAndRape we dont live in the ocean though - we adpated to use boats - sharks dont need weapons to kill so i disagree just on those two basic points alone :P

@DiveMagazine or maybe large porbeagle sharks, as from same family as great white they could easily be mistaken as smaller great whites. but you are probably right as basking sharks are quite common around the UK shores due to high plankton blooms. however with great whites being so wide spread and with global warming of waters around the world i dont see it as impossible that a rogue white may be spotted in those waters.

I saw a great white a few miles off Nantucket, MA. One of them ate a seal right off a popular beach in Cape Cod last summer too.

I think it's amazing how they can propel themselves out of the water like that. Makes you realise just how fast and powerful they are.
Beautiful animal, but definitly not one I'd want to play around in the water with.
