Wow,there are way to many hat ecomments here. Everyone is just expressig there opinion and obviosly opinions are gonna differ through age group. Im 13 and personally am not intersested in this movie, yu people need to get over it.
Cant get poor little Mary out of my mind. She's been in my head for days. Keep telling myself its not real its just a film. Gerri was so distant with her. She needed to confront Mary long before about flirting like that with her son. And when it went wrong she was soo cold. Not really a proper friend to her. She could see how vulnerable she was. But some people are like that I suppose. These characters are totally real and complete. Need to see the rest of Leigh's films now!
can someone PLEASE tell me the name of the piano music that starts at :44? it is so addicting and i love it. if anyone knows the name, please tell me!!!!!
@girgurl297 It's a movie about people and their lives through the process of a year. It's actually an incredibly poignant and moving slice of life film. Just goes to show you don't need unnecessarily epic plots, unrealistically attractive actors & stupid Hollywood imagery to affect an audience and escape. But maybe you should just stick to Twilight.
@Dtisfit I don't watch or like Twilight. And I watch moving stories all the time. Somehow you thing all these things about the movies I like from one stupid comment? Nice.
@girgurl297 Well, you managed to come to your conclusion about a very highly acclaimed film by just watching a trailer. I mean seriously 'so this is a movie about old people. . . doing old people thing. Sounds boring' that's the opinion of either A) a 12 year old, or B) a very immature adult. I hope for your sake it's the first. Ever heard the phrase don't judge a book by it's cover? Well, it works for films & their trailers, too.
i used to watch all these kinds of movies...but these days I'm just not in the mood and prefer a good thriller or suspense! u have to be in a special mood to be able to watch these stuff
i think 2 hours and 10 minutes of it was too long, if it were a french or spanish film it would be much easier to take it, this way it's just about distanced friends, family centrism, alienation, too much of endless frenetic monologues by the character mary, and the aloofness of the character gerri is frightening, anyhow, i still have a major headache after watching this film, and it's been nearly 6 hours since i've seen it.. wouldn't see again
yes, i am 24. sometimes we need to take a break from the blockbusting CGI stuffed hu ha action bomblasting crap we usually prefer to watch. :D. movies like this is where the magic of cinema really is.
@whiding@lunaboy030@aleeex789 etc. Yeah, you guys are better off sticking with Transformers 4 or Twilight or whatever other shit is marketed in the 12-16 year old demographic. Mike Leigh's a filmmaker, not some brainless Hollywood executive.
i did not flinch a smiling muscle.. i yawned alot, and struggled to get through the film.. at this very moment im listening to the last 10 minutes and posting this comment
@joelstutz I wouldn't say it's a complete waste of time, but no, nothing much does happen. The title pretty much sums it up. It's just "another year" -- not a particularly eventful one -- in the life of a married couple. Just okay, I think.
this looks like an incredibly dull film. It's nominated for best original screen play (not to say its a bad screenplay), they must really be scrapping the barrel in that category
@nowhereman136 you are an idiot. mike leigh is a very good film maker. he makes movies about real people. why don't you go cue up for the double 3d re-screening of avatar and inception?
@metrodome934 i have the same problem with his other movies, they're well scripted and acted but slow and predictable. I did like Topsy-Turvey but on the whole his movies lack an entertainment value. Inception should win for best writing but the award is probably going to the King's Speech. Even that movie had unique characters and witty dialogue that made me want to keep watching.
@nowhereman136 It's almost like writing without any true gimmicks and focusing entirely on what you already have. For me, I rated this on it's merits and it cannot be the movie's fault if it preserves great acting sense and scripts, but my own personal bias for not liking the "same-old" media. It's an interesting dilemna, but a film maker's purpose is not to truly entertain at times. From this we see a perfected clash of allot of his earlier movies.
@rantersparadise Why else would you see a movie? if i told you i'm gonna make a movie that about a guy reading shakespeare for two hours, how would you respond? Yes it is well written, and the guy speaks beautifully. and this is my artistic vision to show shakespeare in this format. That movie would be very dull and no one would care. A film maker uses his art to entertain if he plans to show it to other people. Movies are a performance first and formost
@AngelofMusic04 Well the Oscars neglected her but the Baftas haven't and cross your fingers she wins. This movie hit way too close to home for me because I am that Mary character only difference is I don't drink and I'm male.
@jellybaby999 Considering the shaft Mike Leigh's movies have been getting for the last couple years, I think the Academy not doing their job right is something of an understatement.

Actors and perhaps even some movie stars who want to be "actors" can only dream of becoming a part of the Mike Leigh Repertory Company.
