  • Is this the closest shave of all methods? or no?

  • quick question... I just started shaving with a straight razor... at what point will I stop bleeding all over the place?

  • Geofatboy: Super surgical sharp straight-razor

    .......

    Well that's encouraging

  • great video, I am thinking of getting a safety razor, would you recommend oil for the skin, I have tried the lather but I have pretty sensitive skin and the oil does it for me, still need to apply a fare but of it. thank you

  • Excellent video!

Can a straight razor be used on a 5 day old beard?

    Thx

  • Man how do you have time to str8 shave your face

  • Just bought a dovo. I have a friend who is a Turkish barber (Turkish born and trained) -great guy and a master of the razor, he gave me some stuff called 'Selin' lemon colgone. It's a kinda astringent heals up minor cuts and soothes the skin as well. All the Turskish barbers (best in the world) use it. It's also cheap and smells great I'd really recommend it.

  • Just orders one a Dovo from Straight Razor Designs. Looking forward to a manly shave!

  • Can I shave my scrotum with a straight razor?

  • @austinguy23 Knowing what a straight razor can do, I would say that is HIGHLY inadvisable. I mean, yeah you could probably do it, but would you really want to take the risk?

  • @austinguy23 Shure if you want to castrate your self :-)

  • @austinguy23 damn rights you can! Get your girlfriend or a friendly neighbour to help you get into that hard to reach area!

  • cheers, great tutorial.

  • the neck shaving part kinda hurts

  • Today I got my first Dovo. :)

yep, there is a learning curve. I'm left handed and it went quite well on the left side of the face. but i mentioned some tugging - is it possible that the blade got "dull" lying around in the shop, I mean the shopkeeper showing it around and stuff? :(

soo the right side was a little bloody mess..

I also mentioned that it didn't glided smoothly all the time, do I have to change my lather? or is it because of the blade? Help me please!

  • @BlueShirt7 sounds like it needs to be honed

  • @BlueShirt7 You need a good ol' strop and hone. Lathers vary for people, but really any lather that is free of harmful perfumes and heavy oils (and vice verse) will do the trick

  • Exactly how bad of a cut can this razor give? I mean can it peel off skin? :S

  • @xCh34pShOtx Why do you think the common name for these is the "cut-throat razor"? :)

  • @xCh34pShOtx Only if you don't shave balancing the weight of the razor

  • In your Opinion, what the BEST STRAIGHT RAZOR BLADE brand & model??? Also WHAT'S THE BEST SAFETY RAZOR & BLADES Brand & Model?? thank you for the informative videos...

  • gillette for pussy, straight razor for men!!!!!

  • @MrKorbenDallas not all of us can get a straight razor

  • @cademar40 That is sad :-(.....

  • Could you please make a video where you explain how to shave with a chainsaw?

  • Thanks for the laugh at around 2:38, and for the guide of course! I just bought a Dovo Shavette (with black sleeve for their own blades) and cut myself around the chin like a hundred times - calling them battle scars. I bet your guide will make it easier, so thanks a lot.

    *subscribed*

  • Thanx for all your vids i just finished my first straight razor shave only one lil cut on the chin whatchin your vids made it easy to do

  • great vid Geo....love them all.

  • I just got my straight razor stroped it and started i cut myself a little but it was my first time :) i think its WAAAY better than any other :)

  • I have been shaving with a Barbers A1 that I found at a garage sale for the last 30 years. There is nothing like a shave with a straight razor. Oh yeah, if you take care of the razor it will last a lifetime, my razor is really old.

  • Ok i fucking get it!

  • Are those Dovo blades good for beginners?

  • First time I used a straight razor it pulled and pulled on my hairs. not enjoyable. It did cut but I figure that the razor did not come shave ready and I didn't have the strop or hone to get it that way. So in the future I'll like to try again with a better razor and have the tools needed to enjoy a razor. Way better then a disposable or electric... its an art!

  • Nice video!

  • when you say "first pass" does that mean you have to do it multiple times? what about shaving upwards?

  • Wich is best - the real old type or the new with blades you can change...?

  • Hey, first of all thanks for the videos, have helped me a lot.

I have had about 6 or so shaves with my Dovo straight razor but every time have had issues with shaving above and below my lips. The razor grabs the hair and if I was to continue the razor would jerk most likely resulting in me cutting myself. Do you have any advice for doing those areas?

  • shave master!!!

  • Hey I just got a straight razor but it's disposable ones. Is that alright an how many times can't I use it before changin the blade on it.

  • *Grammar Corrections* Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I could not afford a straight razor with a built in blade so I bought one with disposable blades...what is your take on this? Is using the brush to apply the shaving cream which I am going to purchase one, but prior to it arriving can I just lather my face with my hands and should I have a problem? Thank you for your time.

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I could not afford a straight razor with a built in blade so I bought one with disposable blades...what is your take on that..also is it using the brush to apply the shaving creme I am going to purchase one but prior to it arrive can I just lather my face with my hands and should not have a problem? Thank you for your time.

  • I found very difficult to use the left hand to do the left side. It has been three shaves so far. I've been using the right hand for both sides, the grip is a little different but i've been managing so far. Is it a normal measure, does it have a special grip for that or should i try the left hand again (with a little cuts)?

  • Just come out of the closet already.

  • nice video . i wish i could do this. i pay for someone to give a straight razor shave . my barber loves me . i plan on trying though .

  • Great Video ! Im after a Straight Razor myself although im after the 1s with the disposable blade, their great in the sense you dont have to keep honing the blade all time plus the blades are considerably cheaper than the disposables razors.

Is their a different technique that has to be applied for the disposable versions or can i just take this advice and use it accordingly ? Thanks

  • i can do this with my spyderco lol

  • If you are looking for a straight razor and you have never had on before I suggest buying a disposable straight edge razor. That way you know you like it before you waste $80.00+ on a razor and $65.00 on a strop. Disposable razors run at most $45. Make sure you know what your getting into before you invest too much in something

  • why is it you only did one pass this time as opposed to the other vids you make where you do three

  • @bloodygopher1 He is just demonstrating.

  • After dealing with safety and electric shavers all my life I wanted to give straight razors a go. The price on these things can be intimidating but I know they are an investment worth investing in. I just don't know if a real expensive one is worth investing in as my first or not.

  • @wolf3037 I'm in the market myself for my first straight razor. From what I read the razor in this video, a Dovo, Full Hollow Ground 5/8" is among the most commonly recommended First Straight Razors. You can find them 'professionally honed'(Important or won't be shave ready) online for around $80.00. Check VintagebladesLLC as they hone each razor they sell and sell them at the same price as everyone else.

Also you will then need a strop and eventually a sharpening stone.

  • @Neogatling Thanks for the feedback Neogatling. I realize that this is a beautiful razor and came to the conclusion that the blade would have to be rested properly on the hone, and that some abrasion would occur. So you are saying that it should be ok to sharpen the razor as per usual without using black tape on the spine? And regular honing and stroping WILL in fact result in minor abrasion and it is normal and to be expected?

  • i just realised i got the exact same Razor for christmas, first time using it i nearly took my upper lip off, but now using it for the 4th time i really love it !

  • What would you say to someone that wants to do this that doesn't have a smooth face i.e acne?

  • @TubazRule94 you will bleed & sting alot

  • Hey Geofatboy, great videos first off! I'm in the market to purchase my first straight razor. I've singled out the Dovo Bismarck 6/8. I'm a millwright by trade and have a lot of experience sharpening many industrial blades, shears, knives, kitchen knives, filleting knives, etc, using stones, hones and strops. My question is, is there any way to hone a straight razor properly without removing material on either side of the spine without compromising the angle of the cutting edge from the factory

  • @TonyBlah sorry if i jump in here, but no, there is no way to strop it that way, usually they make the gold plating right as far as it won´t be affected by proper stropping and the spine is thick enough to take a little abrasion, in fact a proper treated straight razor can be passed through generations.

  • @TonyBlah

You can affix one piece of black electrical tape folded over the top of the spine running lengthwise.

Use Scotch 33 as it is the best for this particular application.

It is more pliable and flexible than brands of tape.

This will protect the spine from wearing away and no worries on the angle compromise as it is very thin material.

You really only need the tape if you are doing a lot of honing on that razor.

  • @geofatboy hey hey... I posted a video; lemme know what you think.

  • I don't have to shave against the grain??? I'm thinking of buying a straight razor I need help

  • @9eric51

    With, Across, or Against...

The choice is up to you.

  • You grow razors on your face?! You've officially reached a state of manliness higher than Chuck Norris!

  • @NCWC2

    Hah!

    I wish....

No one is higher than Chuck Norris....

    Except......you know!

  • thank you. really enjoyed your vid and tips at the end. cheers

  • @rascubulous

    Thanks Mate!

  • I found that I couldn't see what I was doing when trying to shave the right side under the sideburn...or at least it was very difficult. Is this normal?

  • @ThaiGui27

    Totally normal,

It's difficult to see through your arm and hand (unless you're superman).

You need to experiment on ways to work around that.

Add another mirror to the mix, or flip the razor around and go across or against the grain at that spot.

  • Dude! Nice tutorial ^_^ arigato gozaimas ima get me a dovo!

  • @YUGOBOSS47

    Grazie!

  • Geo! Your Vids are awesome, thank you for taking all the time to post them. I just got a Dovo for Christmas from my wife and thanks to you it wasn't a total blood bath! There is something about a straight shave that made my whole day, I'm hooked!

  • @horseshoerhays1

John Wayne shaved with one.....How's that for something to aspire to!

  • Thanks dude, this was exactly what I was looking for. I want to switch from plastic kind of sh*t to a real razor... In my opinion thit is the only real male type of shaving, needs some good preparation, some knowledge and practise though. So thanks for showing me the ropes! =D

  • @Ilovegoodsongs

I couldn't have said it better myself.

  • Geo Just got my Dovo for xmas, got a few questions, I'm not getting a clean shave with it, I'm getting stubble left behind. Does this mean my razor isn't sharp enough, cause it sure is sharp enough to nick my freakin ear lol. Anyway I know there's a learning curve but just wondering if I should strop more. Thanks in advance Jason!!!!

  • @Rjasonl392

Try shaving off some arm hairs, it should be effortless....

If that's not working, strop or hone or both.

  • You have a VERY nice house.. I'm so jealous

I love your vids, keep up the good work

  • @ChrisRane

    OK....

    Thanks Chris.

  • I learnt to masterbate with my left hand. THANK YOU MUSCLE MEMORY!

  • @samjosh30

    Hah hah!!!

    I can't stop laughing!

    Props to you Sir!

  • 8 people slit their throats accidently...

  • @FATPEOPLERULE123

    Lol!

    Great moniker by the way!

  • @FATPEOPLERULE123

    Lol!

    Great moniker by the way!

  • Great film, just got the complete kit. Getting a little burn but cant lather up enough some how! No cuts yet though just not a clean shave yet... Time will tell.!!!

  • @gplambretta200

Work on your lather, you may need to add a couple of water droplets to it to reach your desired thickness.

  • Great video man, thanks so much!

  • @dylangreeney

    Thanks Dylan.

  • @dylangreeney

    Thanks Dylan.

  • Geo greaat Video,, Super Surgical Sharp Blade??? thats funny.. cant wait to get my Dovo.. Great safety tips you cant have littleones play with a blade thats that shrp..

  • @karlbuttler

Thanks, how'd you do with it?

  • whats a hollow ground blade?

  • @londonnw8

Start with a solid piece of metal, then grind off metal from one or both sides of it....

Hollowing it out so to speak.

  • damn, you just scared me from using my first straight razor. i'll just have to man up when my dovo arrives in a few days. :)

  • @ILoveMyTail

Be afraid...... Be very afraid!!! Ahhhh Just kidding!

A little practice and you'll be fine.

Nothing to be too scared of....

  • @geofatboy You scared me breathless! I, too, am waiting for my straight razor to arrive and I must say, the left hand willl be chopped off!

  • @AdamsTeinz

    Perish the thought!

    Good luck!

  • If you want to hone your razor, as a newbie what do I need? like what kind of stones should I get. Thanks in advance. I was waiting for the part where you gonna shave XTG and ATG lol.

  • @llanbull

I go XTG and ATG in a few other videos that you can check out.

A good versatile stone is the Norton 4K/8K Combo stone to keep your blades honed and ready for action! A nice leather strop as well.

    Geo.

  • Thanks for the vid. I'm getting one from the art of shaving...only thing is I can't believe you got it all in one against the grain pass. I probably have super sensitive skin with really thick hair maybe...With the gillete fusion I'm doing at least one up and one down pass on my entire face....thats with a brush, pre-shave scrub and oil.

  • @surgeyX

I have some other vids where I perform 2 and 3 passes start to finish if you want to check those out as well.

    Thanks,

    Geo.

  • @rockdove21st

    Wooooh!

    I hope you enjoyed it!

    G.

  • @HIM0G

Sounds like a nice looking razor....

Send it to me, I'll put it to work!

    Ahhh, just kidding.

Take that baby for a test drive!

    Geo.

  • Maybe I saw this a bit late, while currently nursing 6 cuts after my first day lol. And I compromised on my razor. I have a straight wth a disposable blade, if tht makes any sense. Will b investing in the correct razor soon, perhaps the Dovo. What are your thoughts on Proraso cream?

  • @MPistol 6 cuts? That's all? Just kidding. Try to improve upon that each shave you undertake. A folding razor with replaceable blades is called a shavette. The Traditional Dovo or Boker Edelweiss is a good step up from the shavette. I love me some Proraso Shaving Crem, Pre-Post Balm, Alcohol Free After Shave Balm, so on and so forth. All good and TINGLY when applied! It really is a nice wake-up call for your face! Enjoy. Geo.
  • @geofatboy why alcohol free, "all i need is buuuurn" to quote the deep purple song

  • @baronmaul

Some days I like to go for the old "Sting and Slap" method as well.

Just not every day as alcohol tends to dry the skin out.

    Geo.

  • I salute you. You're brave for instructing WHILE shaving, I was worried you would cut yourself!

  • @jsmcfly

    Nah, It's all good!

    No paramedics needed.

    Geo.

  • Thank you for making such a clear, straight forward and informative video. Very helpful.

  • @newcoyote

    That's how I roll..... :)

    Thanks.

    Geo.

  • Would you recommend a beginner use a shavette? Dovo recommends it. What do you think? I used to get straight razor shaves in Croatia. They were fantastic. Nothing else like them.

Would like to do it myself, but uncertain how to begin...

  • @joel1923

Sure, you can learn the basics on a shavette.

Then work your way up to a traditional Straight razor.

Watch the vids, practice without a blade, then with the blade.

    Geo.

  • safety blades are for pussies!

  • @nazisucksass

Tell us how you really feel!

    G.

  • great video! i was thinking about getting my partner a razor for xmas. can you recommend any razors that are still decent but more inexpensive?

  • @delilaha

Dovo 5/8 round points are around $100...

    Is that in range?

    Geo.

  • Thanks very much for taking the time to do this video. I am a beginner to this and appreciate some advice.

  • @lightinside

    My pleasure my friend.

    G.

  • I finally completed my first shave with my stainless steel 5/8 Dovo today. I had tried two weeks ago yet gave up and didn't shave at all. I shaved my beard off today. Your video is excellent and has helped me tremendously although I got confused holding the razor in the proper hand. I believe you in stating that it will take at least a good month to feel comfortable with it if not more. Thank you.

  • @USAisAntiWhite

Definitely, you're not going to master this in a day....

But if you repeat the process, you will eventually nail it.

    Geo.

  • i must be bored watching stuff like this!

  • @YorkGod1

Ahhh, there are worse things you could be doing other than watching shaving vids!

    It's cool.

    G.

  • can you really get a baby smooth shave with this kind of razor? what I hate is the dark shade I get after shaving (cartridge sensor excel) and that won't go away and I'm just 18 and even have light brown hair not dark

  • @OurBestMusicChannel

    Yes, you can!

    G.

  • "there's nothing you can't learn with a little bit of practice" very true!

  • @chidoiguan

Couldn't have said it better myself..... :)

    Geo.

  • YO GEO! I just shaved with a straight razor! Thanks to this video I didn't cut myself. I spent most of time enjoying the razor and gaining a feel for the razor. I used a bit of Truefitt & Hill shaving cream and some shave soap with my badger brush :D I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER!

  • @gujazed

    Consider yourself hooked!

    Geo.

  • I decided last night to give this a go.

Geo, you make this look so easy!!!

I now look like Freddy Krueger and only lost about a pint of blood.....

But, you've inspired me, so, as soon as my face heals i'll give it another go.

    Thanks for the video.

  • @svporter

Nice! Freddy is way scarier looking than Mike Myers!

Ah, just kidding, stick with it, progress a little at a time and you'll eventually get the hang of it.

    Geo.

  • just got a dovo today.. ohman it was a fucking mess, this will take lot of practice to do it so fast and effortless like you :S i envy you

  • @AzNAnhKhoa

    Persevere to Persevere!

Stick with it, it will come to you!

    Geo.

  • should a straight razor be so sharp you only have to lay a hair and wiggle a bit and it will cut or is that overkill

  • @baronmaul

What you are describing is known as the Hanging Hair Test or HHT.

Yes, you should be able to do that with a sharp Straight Razor.

    Geo.

  • @geofatboy i have tried to do an HHT but it just wont cut, i dont know how to get it sharper as the strop just seem to scratch the blade

  • @baronmaul

Your razor might need to be honed and then stropped.

    Geo.

  • @baronmaul yes

  • @baronmaul What I ment to say is yes your straight razor should be that sharp. A good tell sharpness of a straight razor is to cut your arm hair without touching skin..in other words move the razor threw the arm hair it should cut it in half. One smooth very light swipe of the razor should take off a good amount of wiskers without bounce or skip

  • @greenmarine5

Great comment, you nailed it perfectly.

    Thanks.

  • Comment removed

  • @hotbegreturns

    Good luck.

    G.

  • can you use like shaving cream in a can with a straight razor?

  • @camodudestrikesagain

You can, but you won't be doing your face any favors.

A brush and shaving cream from a tub or tube performs much better.

    Geo.

  • Aren't you supposed to shave against the grain?

  • @perspicacity89 wondering that too. In most 'how-to' books and some other movies they do a second pass against the grain (or at least an other direction)

  • @frietsje

View my video shaving with the Boker Edelweiss, I perform 3 passes with the straight razor.

    Geo.

  • @perspicacity89

Sure, you can go against the grain on the second or third pass after going WTG and XTG.

It's the way to a very smooth shave as long as your face doesn't become irritated.

    Geo.

  • great vid, like all the others by the way...

i'm shaving like this now for a while and i'm getting into it, and i like it!

one problem, i'm having troubles with getting a good view on the 'runways' because the razor is in front of my eyes...

  • @frietsje

    Thanks!

Get yourself a wall mounted mirror that swivels and pulls out like an accordion....

You can adjust it so that you can see all of the areas you need to navigate with your razor.

    Geo.

  • I bought a DE setup from shave nation a few weeks ago, and have decided to make the step up to a straight razor. I have decided to try the Dovo Shaverette 1st, to make sure I'm ready for the move before I invest a lot into a system. Is that a good move?

  • @Vin496

Dovo and Parker Shavettes are OK for lining up and trimming out small areas...

If you want to shave your entire face, look at the the Feather DX and RG models.

Or actual traditional Straight Razors by Boker or Dovo.

The Boker Edelweiss is a great razor.

    Geo.

  • Is it possible to reduce the beard without taking it all off with a straight razor?

  • @AznAlacran

    Not that I know of.....

Sounds like you need a corded or cordless trimmer with a number one or two trimming attachment to do what you want to do...

    Geo.

  • hey i was just wondering... where can i buy a straight razor

  • @wumbie37

I guess you're not seeing the caption in the upper left corner that reads: "Purchase your shaving products at ShaveNationdotcom?"

    Geo.

  • @geofatboy oh thanks i did not see that at all :p

  • Hey Geo im still having trouble. I dont know what else to do any suggestions?

  • Thanks so much for your advice!!!

  • you look like the white bassdrummer from the movie drumline

  • @MrRudimentality

    Hmmmm.....

I've seen that movie but don't recall what he looks like.

I'm heading over to Netflix to see if it's a watch instantly.....

I've also been told I look like Mandy Patinkin from Criminal Minds, and I sound like Jim Caviezel from The Passion of The Christ.... :)

Always fun to hear stuff like that.

    Geo.

  • Hey Geo I have been having trouble finding that 20-30 degree angle you talked about. Do you have any tips or tricks? Thanks

  • @MrBaseball9997

    No problem,

Lay the blade flat against your skin....... now with the sharp part of the blade still making contact, roll the upper part away from the skin slightly, 1/4", 3/8", etc..... it's your call what the exact distance is..... till you get to approx 30 degrees.

Keep in mind that holding the blade perpendicular to your face is 90 degrees.....

This angle is not cast in stone and will need to be changed as you navigate around your face while shaving.

    Good luck!

    G.

  • Thanks man for showing the grip! finding the proper grip has been the most annoying thing about using a straight razor.

  • @cheung1457

    No worries!

    Hope it helped you.

    Geo.

  • I am about to buy a Vulfuix # 40 Super Badger, Knot: 30mm, Loft: 60mm, Handle: 40mm and Overall: 135mm. Is that too big of a brush?

  • @USAisAntiWhite

    How big is too big?

Keep in mind that is a very large brush and will eat up a lot of cream while mixing your lather.

If you're OK with that, then it's all good!

    Geo.

  • Geo, you have a real talent. I think you could make a video about how to properly rake up leaves or watch paint dry and make it both interesting and informative. The fact that you take the time to answer everyone's questions in the comments shows you really are a genuine, helpful guy. Thanks for bringing back the 'experience' of shaving that our older generations enjoyed, and saving us from our modern, overpriced cartridge razor society! cheers!
