  • Just had another one go out on me. $215 for a helicoil or $750 to remove the head.

  • This was very nicely done. Great video.

  • Love the video man ... Thanks

  • Mine 1998 4.6 had the oil leak from back of cylinder head problem...fucking Ford...never buy again.

  • Great video! Thanks! Mine 5.4l ford blew a plug yesterday. Its stripped. I was looking at buying a new truck but after seeing this video I think i will give this a shot. What exactly is this tool called?

  • This is a professional spark plug thread repair kit by TIME-SERT

  • If you put Grease on the threads wouldnt the metal shavings stick on the bit? i used that to tap my motor to run a oil line

  • Ford should have repaired all affected trucks, even out of warranty. Total BS, what a POS.

  • So glad I watched this video......I work at ozone (autozone) and a customer came in with number 3 and 4 cylinder plug blown out.... I knew exactly what to tell him :)....Truck sounded amazing

  • Thank you so much for the video reference.

  • @chris71mach im telling you becuase it happen to me it doesnt work. ford wants 4k to do a head.

  • all I can say is this, I've done dozens of these and haven't had one of them fail yet, and that's way way over 200 miles.

  • 200 miles later it blows the fuck back out then you wish you had takin it to ford to have it done right

  • @hanratty450 actually youre 100% wrong. My 5.4L motor did this same thing and was fixed the same way as he's describing, and I've got WAY over 10k miles on that fix, getting closer to 20k now. this fix holds, believe me.

  • there is a tool designed for a broken spark plug like you have. Call around to a local shop and discuss it with them. If they have the tool, they will know what you are talking about.

  • maybe by chance someone can give me advice. I have a 1997 Ford F150 4.6L v8 2V modular engine. With a stuck #4 plug. It appears to me the hex part of thee plug is totally gone. Is there anything I can do without removing the head? A ny kits I can use?

  • Does anyone know where to buy the tool kit pictured in this video?

  • screw all that Napa and Oreilly's sells a kit with a special spark plug you just thread in the insert that comes with it and screw in the plug, I've had to put 2 of these in my excursion and have over 5000 miles with no touble. so much easier with the same result.

  • that heppend to my 2000 ford lightning i just got new heads and a tune

  • Well done! thankyou for the detailed instructions!

  • This happened to my 2004 Mazda 6 V6 (Ford Engine) I searched google and youtube on how to rethread the cylinder head.. and wow... almost every video or how to, involves Ford engines... wtf?

  • The special tool cost more than the job (excluding tech's experience, labor and shop rent). Some customers never get it. ....Oh why so much? lolz ... great video!

  • Ten minute video and you charged five hours labor at $75/hour right?

Just messing, I know that their were plenty of cuts in between...

  • I`ve got this problem with the wifes car I bought it with this system repair but they had been overtightened again from original owner and the burr heli this type was blown out again i`m thinking head removal is there any other way car is a new 90 Festiva wagon 13000 km on it got it for 10 bucks car is still new .

  • what was that repair kit that was used?

  • I work at a Ford dealer. I have never seen any blown out by a "good" mechanic whether it be Ford, backyard, or otherwise. I have seen all cylinders blow out., not just certain cylinders. 5.4L and 4.6L alike. TORQUE YOUR PLUGS PEOPLE!!!. This won't happen if you do. Don't buy cheap plugs either. All rethread kits vary as well. The one I have is just 2 stages. Tap, install, torque, remove, install plug, torque, done.

  • I own a 2000 f150 115k on it. The plugs were first replaced at 95k by a dealer. After that first tune up I became a professional coil pack and spark plug changer at home. I am not sure if the 2000 is the popular one for spitting out plugs or not. I read somewhere it was the 2004-2007 models with the 3 valves/cylinder styles. What is everyone else's experience with like models?

  • where did you get the little" guide" ?

or if you know the diameter of the tool will be helpfull

    thanks..

  • 9:44 Was that Ken Kaniff From Connecticut?

  • great info repair and tools.

  • Would you happen to know the part/item number for the helicoil kit you used? Ive already had two blow out on me. one in may, and one 4 days ago. So far Ive spent about $500 in repairs. I am pretty familiar with the spark plugs and COPs since ive changed them when i bought my truck.

  • the common scenario is #1 plug loosens #2 you can hear an exhaust leak #3 ignore it and it will blow out

this happens on factory installed plugs as well not only owner installed plugs.

consumer affairs lists this as a "KNOWN design flaw"

    do a web search.

  • you know why #4 blows? its the hardest to reach. ive seen idiots cross thread plugs into that hole. people over torquingthem is the real problem tho. 12 or 13 ft/lbs or torque. play with a torque wrench on a bench to get a feel of how little effort is needed to apply that much torque.

  • @oilfield666 number 4 blows as does3 (the easiest to get to )

    5 threads not jacketed

the heads are faulty. they have been corrected from 2003 up. go check it

  • @oilfield666 the "real" problem is that the heads are junk blow out happened to factory installed heads between 97 and 2002 not JUST cars who have had their plugs done

again? do a search on it you friggin clown.

  • @oilfield666 consumer affairs... read it and weep

    "KNOWN DESIGN FLAW"

  • @ishredu you still crying over your mistakes? oooh and someone is madddd, they started looking for grammar errors. 97-99 used different heads, in 99 they switched over to performace improved heads, which corrected the problem they used to have of lack of threads. was never a problem just idiots like yourself screwed up the plug holes, no one will take blame for it. cobra heads on the aluminum side did not recieve more threads. i know they recieved a insert, same insert used to fix your fuck ups

  • @oilfield666 you seriously do not know what you're talking about

the head revision (strenghening) came in on the 2003 models

again search it..I'm not even close to the only person this happened to

do you NOT know how to search the web?

    I beginning to think not!

this happens to ford installed (duh um factory) so who screwed what up?

go away you're an asshat kid

  • @ishredu LOL look up p.i heads and non p.i heads and what years they were in production. WHY the p.i was brought out...from 99 to 04 there were no major head redesigns. 05 (mustangs, 04 for f150s) started getting 3 valve engines. i dont know where you googled this information but you are sadly mistaken mr.knowitall

  • @oilfield666 this issue wasn't resolved with the first run of pi heads

the revision was made in 2003 again learn how to search the web.

the issue is too few threads and not steel sleeved (the guy in this video is putting in a steel sleeve duh) sort of what the factory SHOULD have done in the first place

the plugs loosen because aluminum heads expand differently than steel (what spark plugs are)

boy am I tired of schooling your dumb ass

  • @ishredu you havent schooled shit. all you did was argue the fact you fucked up modular heads. get over it already

  • @oilfield666 it's obvious that I have failed in TRYING to school your stupid ass that much is blindingly apparent!

    again for the record

All pre03 modulars have 4 thread sparkplug holes all '03+ have 8 thread holes.

simple enough? or do I need to repeat it 1000 times more for you?

  • @ishredu oooh i see you're trying to compare 3 valve and 2 valve heads....you're a year off either way.... if you speak of 2 valve heads then you are AGAIN sadly mistaken old man. get your facts straight...maybe i will take you seriously.now quit your bitching and be the better man ;)

  • @oilfield666 in any event 2003 is the "safe year" if you are on here suggesting that the earlier heads are "OK" then I would seriously have to doubt your mechanical ability

  • @ishredu if you say so mr.knowitall. there were little changes done to the head after the p.i was released....nothing done to the thread cause they added more threads already. how stupid do you idiots get...go google some more while your at it. you may some some nice trick flow heads that will forever solve the problem of old bastards stripping threads

  • @oilfield666 actually the second run ( of pi heads) were beefed up around the spark plug ports but never truly fixed the issue.

so it appears that ford scrapped the heads in favor of the three valve eliminating the issue all together

in any event post 2003 mod fords are a better way to go and will prob. never blow out a plug on it's own or of it's own fault unlike the early heads.

and yep aftermarket heads for crown vics and mustangs etc prior to 2003? I can't disagree with that one.

  • @ishredu hurr durr did you spend all day researching this? do you feel you accomplished somthing? congrats you're officially an idiot. blame the heads, blame ford. this issue is installer error. end of story....get over it, move on, maybe buy a chevy and deal with their problems, chevy can listen to you bitch and whine cause YOU fucked up.

  • @ishredu hey buddy i agree, that guy is a moron , LOL, but are you talking about only mustangs or others as well, you say only 97-2002, but there is alot of people with 2003s that this has happened to !!! i got a 2003 f250 5.4 triton and im wondering ??

  • @therockkkkher you prob have a 2003 car with 2002 heads ( if your car is an early 03) nope! this is mainly crown vics in my case, but any modular engine is at risk no matter what car

  • @oilfield666 right FORD fucked up, not anyone else.

    4 threads pre 2003 8 threads post 2003.

you getting this or do you need to read it one more time?

  • @ishredu get your facts straight.

  • @oilfield666 fact the pre 2003 modular 4.6 heads are junk

buying a ford post 2003 is a safer bet against plug blowout

FACT: plugs do loosen on their own because of differen't expand/contract properties of steel v aluminum

the original ford 4.6 heads SHOULD have had more threads in them..

they corrected this problem 2003 on

    those are facts

you've admitted to all of the above in your own lil way (yeah I read all of your posts)

so there is no point in arguing with me since you do agree

  • i have a 2001 saleen with 56 k miles it has blown out a couple of spark plugs, due to racing. is it that the cylinder heads are bad or is it that i need better spark plugs?

  • You did not put tape over the PVC grommet in the valve cover.

I feel that some metal shavings have gone into the valve cover during the blow-out of the plug hole. I'm in deep shock !

  • Is it possible that this happens due to not changing the spark plugs regularly.

  • @jeepluv76 it happens because when you have them replace they are over tightened.

  • @oilfield666 yeah THAT is ONE of the reasons but a loose plug will warp the threads as well.

  • @ishredu a loose plug will eventually blow out, damaging the threads, destroying the coil where it bolts down as it blows out of the hole like a bullet...but that not very common, id still rather be under torqued then over torqued on these engines.....ive changed enough plugs on non p.i headfs and p.i heads to know what works and how these guys strip the holes. over torquing, and cross threading are the main problems. ive seen it countless times.

  • @oilfield666 in my case it worked itself loose and stripped out..I use the ol' rubber hose starting technique mine was never cross threaded and it was properly torqued..yep! even did it bone cold..6 months later it blew..just worked itself loose..these heads are junk, 5 threads..no wonder

  • @ishredu they dont just work themself loose...the ONLY time you hear of that is in cobras with smaller pulleys...runnin more boost. 5 threads is more then enough for the 12-13ft.lbs of torque requred....its impossible to strip them if installed correctly. and that IS tight enough to prevent it from backing out....you're backed out it was still mechanic/installer error. keep blaming the engine design,

  • @oilfield666 ok so my 3 plugs didn't work themselves loose..

but they did AND they were put in correctly.

    ok

  • @ishredu lol 3 plugs at once? clearly under torqued. there is no reason for them to do anything if installed correctly...ive seen 5.4l engines with 350+ thousand kilometers and never had a spark plug issue. properly maintained

  • @oilfield666 no mine is a 4.6 and no they weren't under torqued nor did they loosen all at once

  • @ishredu 4.6l and 5.4l share the same identical cylinder head...they are called a modular engine for a reason...their part interchageability. and im telling you there were under torqued. things just dont back out for no reason. in 4.6l cobras and some lightnings ppl have blown plugs out but thats due tot he fact they installed larger super chargers. high cylinder pressures......2 hour fix. boom back on the road and you will never have it happen on that hole again.

  • @oilfield666 like I said blow out can BE due to higher compression /boost etc..but so can loose plugs.

and there are BILLIONS of people who've had the same problem with plugs backing out..not a new concept for pre 2003 ford 4.6 owners just do a web search to see for yourself.

eh' cobra heads aren't the same at all btw.

  • @ishredu billions eh.....id like to see you prove that. quit trying to blame someone else...get a new mechanic and grow up. and the plug hole in 4valve cobra heads have no more threads then a P.I 2 valve head does. both made out of the same aluminum.

  • @oilfield666 millions of complaints on file (just look for christs sake) I know you aren't stupid (I think) it is a design flaw..do you work at ford or something? these triton heads are known throughout the industry for this issue..are you new?

    just go search you'll see.

btw I've owned restored cars for 30 years..never had a plug blowout till this heap of snot

  • @ishredu well gramps this isnt your typical SBF ford with crush washers on the spark plugs. its the old timers like you who usually screw our heads up.

  • @oilfield666 you're an idiot.

    do the search, you'll see.

no other problem is MORE as searched than the plug blowout issue w/ the 4.6 ford

maybe only old farts buy fords and then only fix them themselves?

    hey, that's what you're suggesting

    BRILLIANT!

  • @ishredu im suggesting you're a whiny ol fart who cant accept responcibility for his own mistakes.

  • @oilfield666 and I'm suggesting you're a stupid moron who can't even grasp spelling never mind spell check 40 cars no spark plug blowouts and THIS is MY fault?

go back to elementary school buddy or at least have your mom show you how to use sp check.

  • @oilfield666 sam aluminum different thickness..plus have more threads and are reinforced (sleeved)

    you are new lol

  • @oilfield666 5threads in the head is the issue..like I said the NON cobra 4.6 stock pre 2003 heads (they had to retool to get it right the 2nd time lol) were and remain...JUNK.

  • @oilfield666 anyhow the point is the same, loose plugs can cause strip out.

  • whats funny is my 07 ford focus did this very same thing, thankfully it was still under warranty. dealership was tryin to say it was my fault, and when it blew it it blew apart my coil boot, melted the coil pack and valve cover. cost the warranty compant 2g's to fix the problem. oh and mine was on the #1 cylinder

  • Comment removed

  • hey whats the name of that rubber tool to get the spark plug started i like it please let me know asap than ks

  • @steven212008 A hose.

  • @steven212008 rubber fuel hose...

  • Spark plug breaks in beetween thread and conical surface which is pressing and sealing on surface of head. It is fairly easy to unscrew rest of thread tube using reverse thread tap-like tool and some amount of liquid nitrogen. It takes couple of minutes and almost no effort. Conical sparkplug gasket surface torques rest of thread and when its gone, thread is hold down only by carbon residue.

  • @MrPiwo you speak of a 3 valve engine with th 2 piece plug design that breaks apart. cheap tool for that rather easy repair

  • I think this is one of those fixes where you "fix" it and then SELL it!

  • How is it that no shavings get into the bore and cause cylinder damage?

  • I have a 98 expedition with the 4.6 and with 170,000 plus miles on it, i have never had an issues with my spark plugs.

  • @fordwindsor351 did you own it all its life? been 5 months had any spark plug issues now ?

  • @therockkkkher I bought it brand new, the only miles that were on it was the test miles and the little driving here and there by tech and who ever, there was 21 miles on it when I got it. Most of the spark plug issues were in the 5.4, the 97 and 98 5.4 were not nothing good, the reason i went with the 4.6 in mine.

  • How much do you typically charge to re-do a plug?

  • I very much appreciate the thoroughness of your video.

  • THANKS FOR DOING THIS FOR US, WE REALLY APPRECIATE YA'LL....NOW I'M SHOWING MY APPRECIATION BY MAKING A DONATION TO THE CAUSE

  • I never had a blown out spark plug on my gm cars or trucks I never liked ford

  • awesome

  • awesome.....

  • holy crap my 07 focus did this last night but on cylinder 1

  • These guys, Richpin and Eric the car guy are the best ever on youtube

  • @foxdmulder scottykilmer does a good job too. he answers all my car questions through a PM!

  • My crown vic did this for the second time yesterday, its going on Craigslist and I'm buying a GM car.

  • that happen to my 2003 gt i have 75,000 miles on it was causes that. spark plug to jump out like that

  • I have a 98 lincoln with a blown 4th spark plug, any advice how to reach it?

  • Got a 2003 F150 4.6 Triton do this to my #3 cylinder at about 120,000 miles. Bought it used at 50,000, and it has given me enough problems since. This particular problem happened after I started it up randomly one time while on the job. Definitely not getting another Ford truck, that's for sure.

  • hey john this is how its done bro !

  • What has Ford done to rectify the problem in later models?

  • what about the chips that go into the hole, is alright to just leave it?

  • @dublyooteeeff

no, you must blow them out with compressed air. otherwise, you're very likely to run into problems

  • just got mine fixed today. It was cylinder 2. Cost me $208.

  • I visually checked all my COPs and all are still intact. The strange thing is no engine light came on.

  • This just happened to me two days ago. Sounds exactly the same. How do you know its 3 or 4?

  • @wardubo The dealer will tell us which one.

  • This just happened yesterday to my 2001 f-150 its got the 4.6l with 136k miles on it it was the #3 on the passenger side any idea on the price range on this getting fixed?

  • Glad I buy Chevys

  • My 1999 Ford F-150 5.4 Triton Engine Blew spark plug #4 right out of the head at 130,000 miles. The truck was always VERY well taken care of and I purchased it new. They were able to fix it for 500 dollars and I sold it the next day. I don't trust Fords anymore.

  • @joi1900 never trust A FORD

  • @bigfrankhu2l Funny, I've had the same exact thing happen to CHEVY! Only it happened to me in my motorhome. 200 miles from any civilization. Lucky for me i had a tap and die set as part of my "emergency" tool kit. And that the treads were partly salvageable (enough to get to a shop).

  • What is your average charge to the customer? I have used this kit and was curious what you charge your customers. Thanks!

  • haha. yeah. make sure its tight. ( look how long that rachet is). i dont know why he didnt say to torque the plug to probly 14-17 ft. lbs.

  • cschoening091, i have a 2003 f250 ford service manual and for this model its 11ft lbs. for the sparks, but i dont know if they (ford)have changed the specs. now because of these problems, so if anybody knows please comment!!

  • oh never torqued that spark plug so next time that does not happen

  • That kit is crap. On other tools the tool itself is self aligning in the sparkplug bore. Also the guy didnt tell you to check to make sure the valves are closed on that cylinder so the tap dont hit.

  • @daledewitt Not only that, but if the intake valve is open, your going to blast some of those metal shavings into the intake manifold which would just suck back into the engine when its started again. I like the Time Sert kit better than this one.

  • i need to know where can i get this kit ? can i rent it or i have to buy it??? or around how much can they charge to replace a blown spark plug from a 1997 f-150 5.4 triton engine???

  • Comment removed

  • What's the Name and Brand of the two kits you showed in the Video....I like the fact that you used the red little guide, so i'd like to use that to be sure i'm making the thread in the right angle....so if you could please tell me the Brand or link or some info on which the big kit is, i'd appreciate it.

  • rrraiderr, i think he said recoil was the name of the small kit, i think the big kit is from ford, man i am pissed and ford should give every owner a free kit!!! if they dont they have just lost a life customer, should have bought a old truck, this is just complete bull#@&%!!!!! PISSED!!!!!!!!!!

  • yeah i know what you mean....i already bought the kit and installed it....it works better than before....my expedition hauls my trailer at like 7 miles and hours with out stepping on the gas....that is incredible since my trailer weighs like 7000 pounds or more, but no more than 8000.

  • Comment removed

  • this happen to my 02 mustang and used a kit similer but i didnt have an air gun so i just cleaned the shreds around the head and also i didnt bang it in started it up and made same noise any ideas

  • @sick02GtVert Did your engine blew the plug out ??
