  • Do you mind giving me a link to where you ordered that keyboard from? I tried looking on dell's site but couldn't find anything. thanks

  • @cscrignaro

No link on their site is provided. I had to call their support directly and ask for the part, they then transferred me to their parts department and asked for my laptop serial number and then made the order over the phone.

  • thanks a lot , i fix up my xps in 5 min after that i have saw the video :D

  • nice belly

  • @IFalker Why is there so many people like you that feel the need to try to hurt people.

  • Sorry but you shouldn't use a screwdriver or anything metal as you will mark the edge.. Use an old credit or debit card.

  • nice video man

  • I want to buy one for my 702x, I live in the Netherlands, but where to buy.. any suggestions/links? Thanks already :)

  • @LekkerPilsjeMan

You might want to try contacting Dell support to make sure they produce backlit keyboards in your region first. If they do, they probably can sell it to you directly or at least give you the part number of it so you can search the internet for other sellers.

  • @CapinJakSparo Thanks :)

  • @LekkerPilsjeMan Bij replacedirect.nl zijn ze te koop, al zijn ze daar niet echt goedkoop!

  • Thanks for the video! I was actually trying to figure out where my wireless card was and while watching this video, found out that it was under the keyboard. So, with this video I was able to locate and install my better wireless card (when I ordered my laptop, they didn't allow the option to add the upgraded on). Thanks again!!!

  • @MrSF247

That's cool! Glad the video helped in other ways!

  • Hi where would I find a keyboard like this but for the 15" model. I don't know where to buy the keyboard? thanks

  • thanks for this!

  • TY very helpfull, the only thing I would add is that it is very easy to put the power strip to the keyboard on backwards since the traces on the ribbon are hard to see.

So if it does not work first time try turning the ribbon around so that the white strip is facing outward.

  • @claudebo

LOL! good point! Kind of what happened to me the first time I tried installing it, except I had the ribbon for the keyboard flipped. I had to "retake" that section of the video and do it correctly.

  • this is awesome.. Is there a backlit keyboard for a N4010 laptop. It an Inspiron 14R I've looking everywhere and can't find it. Is there a website that sells custom laptop keyboards?? Thanks

  • @Hector1657

I don't know if there is one, but if you are having a hard time finding one it may be due to the motherboard not having the capability to power a backlit keyboard. Quickest way to find out is asking Dell support. If there is one available they should be able to tell you.

  • Thanks so much for this. Typing from my new backlit keyboard, installed with your help.

  • Doesn't look like it will. Google "n7010 service manual" and you will find a link on the Dell site that shows pictures of the laptop keyboard and connectors. The process of disassembly is completely different than the L702X.

  • will this work on the 17r (n7010)??

  • thank you so much for this tutorial :]

bought my one without backlight and its horrible :P

  • I ordered a refurb l702x laptop with a backlit keyboard, when i got it i was very dissapointed to find there was none, but the retailer refunded me the amount the backlit keyboard costed and this video saved the day! thanks alot

  • Is it the same on the L701 ?

  • @wilteduk007

The removal/replacement process is similar, but the keyboard dimensions may not be the same. You will have to call Dell to double check. Google "l701x service manual" if you want the printed version of the process. I'd paste the URL, but keep getting errors trying to post this.

  • this one differs from the l502x, right? thanks.

  • @thuhoan

Yes, very different. Google "L502X service manual" and there will be link to a page that shows how.

  • Excellent DIY Video, Very Easy To Follow.

  • is the replacement process the same in the XPS L502x?

  • @viethomeboiii

No, very different. Google "L502X service manual" and there will be link to a page that shows how.

  • Thanks bro :D

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Saved me about a hundred bucks.

  • where did you get the screw drivers, and what size are they?

  • @frannyj2344

They were just your typical phillips head and flat head screw drivers. Nothing fancy.

  • Hi, thanks for uploading this video, fantastic job. I have 2 questions for you. First will this keyboard work with the Dell XPS 17 L701X (first model)? Second, I am living in Ireland & need to know if there is a € symbol on the backlit keyboard? Many thanks for your help, Tom.

  • @tomcrobe

From what I've read from other sites, this keyboard will not work with the L702X - something to do with dimensions of the keyboard. Also, Dell only made U.S. layout version for the backlit feature, thus no euro symbol.

  • @tomcrobe We get screwed every which way they can in Ireland. I'm expecting my new XPS soon, and I'm just sickened at how dell screws us over everytime, we pay twice as much for everything.

  • does it have any "weak" parts or spots that might brake when they're opened?

and another thing, about warranty, I know that opening the Keyboard on some Asus laptops voids the warranty; is it the case with Dell's XPS 17 L702X ?

  • Where can I buy this keyboard? The Dell does not have the option to buy separately. : (

  • @davido31

It isn't offered on their website. You will need to call Dell support directly and ask for the part. If outside the United States, you may find them on Ebay or an online reseller of Dell parts, but be aware that as far as I know the backlit keyboards are only offered for U.S. English layout version.

  • @CapinJakSparo The French site of Dell also offers the backlit keyboard via their configuration tool on the website.

  • First of all thank you so much for posting this video. I have the exact model. The CTRL key stopped functioning so I called Dell and had them dispatch a service tech (laptop still under warranty). He came out, replaced the keyboard, and everything seemed fine until I noticed that the keyboard wasn't seated properly. By that time, of course, the tech already left. So I decided to see if I can do it. After a little searching I found your video and the problem was fixed within 15 min. Thank you!!!

  • Very thanks! Much better than Dell manual

  • I made the same mistake in missing the backlit keyboard as an additional option. I think the narrative is misleading on Dell's website. However, many thanks for this video. It made the installation a piece of cake. Everything went smoothly and was a complete success. Thanks.

  • wtff im so pissed i ordered an i5 xps l702x laptop and the backlit keyboard isnt even installed when i ordered one. assholes....

  • I just followed this and it worked excellently. The little ribbon wasn't so bad either!

  • I'm considering buying this laptop for college and the only problem I could find with it is the weight; do you think 3.6kg + charger and mouse is too much for carrying around (i.e: from lectures/class rooms to dorms)

  • @dedu15

It's not so much the weight that is the problem for mobility, but the size. You'll need to find a satchel or backpack that can accommodate the width. It covers quite a bit of surface space as well. This would mostly be ideal for going to locations where you'll be there for more than an hour at a time, but not to pick up and go class to class in my opinion.

  • DOES THIS VOID WARRANTY?

  • @Biguuns The topic never came up in my conversation with Dell reps on the phone, but then I can't see why it would, as long as you use the parts ordered from Dell. They allow you to do upgrades on your own system. Dell provides the service manuals for this, and this is just the video version of the steps right out of the service manual, with exception of one step that wasn't necessary, and added another like putting back the "L" shaped panel before flipping the laptop back over.

  • Very good vid, thanks. Just replaced mine and this helped a lot.

    Thanks.

  • Hi there - Thanks for the great Vid - It will (hopefully) be very helpful.

Do you have the Model numbers etc of the Backlit KB so that I can order one from Dell?

    Thanks in advance - Geoff

  • @geoffcraig

The emailed order confirmation I got only indicates "Keyboard,102,United States,English,C12NB". It would be better to tell them you want that backlit keyboard for the "model L702X" instead just to avoid confusion. Even better, if you can give them the service tag number on the bottom of your laptop, that should ensure they know exactly what model laptop you have and that you get the correct backlit keyboard part sent to you.

  • well done!!! After watching you do it i think I am going to order it with the backlight... i know my limitations..

  • Thanks a lot for this! Was really disappointed when mine arrived and it didn't have a backlit keyboard! I didn't get the choice so i just assumed it was standard! Hopefully if i get in contact they'll let me buy one! I live in Ireland though so might not be so lucky! Thanks again! :)

  • @911jaz

You're welcome! If Dell won't sell you one (I think only US versions are given backlit keyboard options), I've seen plenty of them on Ebay and even on some European online retail sites through google searches.

  • Also where did you purchase your keyboard?

  • @Sonnera

I bought it directly from Dell. Just call them and tell them you need to order a part and they'll forward you to their parts dept. I basically told them I forgot to add the backlit keyboard during configuration and wanted to buy one. They'll ask for your service tag number on the bottom of the laptop, then quote you a price. They shipped mine fast.

  • I was going to have a computer repair store do this ( i may do it myself), but one of the technicians said not all computers accept backlit keyboards. Is that not an issue for any Dell L702x models?

  • @Sonnera

I configured mine starting from the most basic setup, not from one of the pre-configured models (didn't want Studio version, or 3D and 3GB version of video card, etc. etc.) According to the Dell official service manual for the L702X, this is how to change out the keyboard. Here is the link -
