  • OMG! THANK YOU! I've been wanting to do a granny square and this is VERY helpful. Of course I kept pausing and replaying, but I think I've got in now.

  • everything is going to fast i cant do it

  • everytime i try to make this and get higher up in the number of rows its starts to curve and it becomes krinkly. it wont lay flat. i dont know what im doing wrong. :l

  • As usual, great video. Clear audio and visual throughout. My recommendation to people would be to check out Crochet Geek's basic tutorials if you are new to the craft. They are insanely helpful and can help you hit the ground running on things like this. Thanks for the videos!

  • what, can u not slow down and show people step by step good gosh!!!!!!

  • @Haleyhayhay12

There's this thing called a pause button. Honestly I don't know why people are complaining..I have viewed other tutorials that go much faster. This one is rather slow...if you need it to go slower you might want to invest some time in researching some slow-motion crochet tutorials. There are a bunch out there if this (already slow) explanation is not slow enough. If my memory serves me correct, crochet geek has plenty of videos with slow-mo in them. GL.

  • love to do all different squares then crochet them together. hope it comes out looking ok. lol You are one of the best teachers. You are appreciated!!

  • @MsBree707 Thank you MsBree

  • @DaysofthePhoenixxx I have posted a link to the written instructions in the video details below.

  • @DaysofthePhoenixxx On this square the chain 3 is counting as the first stitch. The stitches should be even on all sides with each round. Make sure your stitch count is correct.

  • YES! Finally a video I understand! I like that I can change colors if I want instead of their being a funky pattern. Thank you SO much!

  • @orangeswild123 You are welcome.

  • i like the video, but could u try zooming in more?

  • @dancer8164 i agree

  • Please Slow Down 1st Time Time To Learning Granny Squares

  • great video; thanks for posting this!

  • i've seen alot of people say that ms teresa is going too fast if you would just pause the video and do the section first then restart it then you wouldn't get behind i do this for all of her videos and honestly i've seen a video of her actually crochetting and she is much faster then you think. so just pause it and everything will be ok i'm pretty sure you would not sit down and watch a 5hr video so you can do stitch by stitch with the person

  • Nice video. I've been crocheting since I was 11 (now 23) ad have never learned how to do a square lol.

  • Thank you so much. I finally master the square. I found myself crochet in different colors after putting my toddler to bed.

It is so soothing listening to your voice and doing @ the same time.

This is going to be her first crochet blanket for her third birthday. I am a newbie, but with your instructions I made ton of things.

    Big hugs to you

  • Thumbs up if you got mad and snapped your crochet hook...

    Lol

  • @LAMAxFACE I have thrown my yarn across the room but never broke a crochet hook.

  • @LAMAxFACE mm lucky I got stainless steel hook just in case >=D

  • @LAMAxFACE LOL

  • hey um can you change colors while wroking on this specific project

  • @laffytaffylalala Yes you can change colors

  • hi teresa. in the beginning you say to chain 3 and do 2 double crochet and when i did that an worked on it sort of left a gap between the first three DC so then i started over and did chain one as a step up and then did 3 DC it worked out pretty good in the beginning lets see how it goes :)

  • in the beginning when you start going through the middle exactly which part do you go through im confused where to go through

  • thnx this helped a ton ^_^*

  • Very helpful, alittle confusing about the corners but after a second look, I got it. Thanks

  • i am tryen to do this ...your so awesome ty if i get any thing done i ll post...ty i ll watch them all ..

  • it's called a pause button people....

  • Great video. I enjoy all of your projects. I personally like how quick the video was... Guess you cant please everyone(: Thanks for the great tutorials.

  • This is an intermediate stitch that's great for baby afghans. I've always wanted to see how this was done. Thanks for the great tutorial. I've subscribed to watch more. hehe. Don't listen to the banter on here, most of them are beginners and trying to advance. Perhaps they should try the stitch guides in the back of crochet magazines to learn more? Just a suggestion.

  • First, I'd just like to point out a couple things. You're going too fast and you're doing the crocheting before you're saying what to do. What you should do is say the instructions first, and then do the first crocheting steps slowly so everyone can see them easily. Then you should go fast after that. Plus since you are going too fast, it is hard to see how you're holding it and which way you're pulling the threader so my square always turns into a circle.

  • @vtnangel I have taken all comments related to yours and implemented them over the past three years since this video was made. I sent you a playlist with over 35 granny squares.

  • @vtnangel If you are new to crochet, you will want to learn the beginner crochet stitches first before trying any project. Everything will make more sense.

  • @vtnangel why don't you do the video then if you know so much about everything

  • Way too fast for me I'm afraid. Even with pausing, I couldn't work out where I was. Maybe when I've learnt a bit more I'll be able to follow your tutorials as you've got some beautiful work I'd like to try.

  • The tutorial is really not that bad, it's just the angle of the camera you can't see that well. Also for those that can't follow it go to a different video then.

    .

  • @mavjification You are very disrespectful!

  • This is a great tutorial! Thank you so much! Also, your yarn just looks so soft, it would just make the best quilt to sip hot cocoa with in the winter =)

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you so much for this video! I don't have the patience to make multiple squares and join them. However using thisstraightforward tutorial and pattern has allowed me to make a baby blanket that I love!

  • omigog you lost me so many times....my wool is worn through unravelling and starting from scratch so many times...very frustrating!!!!

  • @xDavexDaviesx I sent you another version of the solid granny square

  • I didn't think it was too fast! If anyone thinks it's too fast, just pause it until you catch up with her. Not that hard!

  • You video is incredibly frustrating and hard to follow. Not everyone is as fast of a crocheter as you. Slow it down a bit.

  • Lady, you need to slow down. I was trying to keep up with you, but I just couldnt. I tried a number of your tutorials, and you lost me every time.

  • @GotBlahniks The beginner crochet list is on the way!

  • @GotBlahniks try pausing, that's what I do :-)

  • Thanks for the video but you're going too fast!!

  • Thanks love the video

  • @vbaby0207 You are welcome

  • Thanks so much for the video!!

  • @GraciaZG you are welcome!

  • Hi @tjw1963

If you do a bunch of them can you make a bed cover / trow ?? And if so , how do you put them all together..?? Crochet is still all new for me ...but I have a lot of question...

    Thank you :)

  • @tashabigstar I have a couple tutorials for sewing squares together, I will send them to you.

  • thank you! this video helped me a lot.

  • @majyk63 You are welcome!

  • thank you finnaly.

  • @TheSimba14 You are welcome!

  • this was really good me and my mum are trying to learn and we are just getting the hang of this haha

  • @I1DONT4LIKE0PIE I will send you a playlist with a lot of granny squares.

  • This was great to get instructions for, but sooo fast...I had to keep stopping it to learn.

  • @Drkffyre Thank you. Stopping and pausing the video is a great tool that YouTube provides to us for the reason you described.

  • Teresa, is there a way to close up those space holes that go diagonally in an X on this square? Thanks!

  • @cascadejacques You can try working the increase stitches in the last stitch on the corners and not using the chain. The problem you may run in to is the corners tugging and curling up.

  • hi I justed liked you on face book your really good

  • Thank you!

  • I like the look of a solid granny square more than the traditional square, you're instructions were very clear thank you =] I just learned something

  • @Amy666Kins Thank you.

  • if you wanted to make a granny square gift box to put a small dog sweater into what steps would I use? Can you please tell me or makea tutorial showing how to crochet a gift box for christmas? tank you Theresa :]

  • would it make a diffrence if i were to do one ch instead of two ch?

  • @Shemaine26 There is the possibility that your corners may curl up. You can try it and see what happens. If you find that your corners are curling, that will be the reason so you may need to go back to working 2 chains.

  • Wonderful....thanks for this video...:)

  • Thank you so much for making these videos. i cant learn from a book i need to be able to see what i have to do. by watching your videos i made four granny squares today. Thank you!!

  • @TheRds1979 You are welcome. I appreciate the comment.

  • this is not a good improvment i still dont get it u dont say anything or tell ur whe=at to do i do not like this video ur only explaining what u r useing

  • How do you close the last loop at the end?

  • @ibenzava You will slip stitch in to the beginning stitch to join. I like to wrap the yarn over making one more loop, cut the yarn, pull the tail through, then give it a good tug to make sure it is secure.

  • After the first circle of of double crochet, do you join it in the beginning chain by going in the back loop only (as if you were slip stitch joining) or do you go through both loops (aka the whole crochet stitch or V) Thanks!! :)

  • Thank you soo much for showing this..i was soo confused....this really helped me.

  • Thank you for showing the basic start of the square, but when you started the outer square, it did get confusing, as you did go pretty fast after that, please remember that we are only beginning with these fantastic crafts, and we don't want to be put off. After saying that, I did learn to do the starters of the square, but had to start again, after doing an hexagon, and a wobbly round, lol. Then I finally cracked it with a proper square

  • @bluesuew Please keep in mind that you have pause and rewind. This video was made over two years ago when I was limited to 10 minute uploads. I did the best I could at the time, with the tools I had available.

  • Thank You x Y

  • @xcrochetcrazyx You are welcome.

  • how do you do the embellment the flower on the square you made the solid granny sqaure is there a viedo how on how to do the flower for the sqaure you made and showed

  • @nycutiepie41683 I will send you a link to a video for sewing flowers to a square.

  • how did u make the flower embellishment on it !!! how come it comes out with odd numbers like you said three across then do the corner then u do the next row it like 5 across all odd numbers is it supposed to be like that.please get back to me?

  • Excellent demonstration! After a a multitude of several failed attempts (nearly 20 years); I was able to crochet a successful Granny Square. Thank you for all of your time and efforts.

  • How would you do a solid granny triangle that would match this solid granny square? I'm making a project using solid granny squares and need to make about six triangles, but I want them to match the solid look... and thank you for your videos! Great tutorials, all of them.

  • @harmonykieding Apologies! I just located your other video called 3-sided Solid Motif Triangle, so I've answered my own question.

  • @harmonykieding OK, let me know if you need help finding other videos.

  • Thanks, I finally got it. The book patern was no help.

  • @ehna22 I am glad that you got it.

  • Just what I was looking for! Thank you!

  • ok, so I have question, so first you crochet a chain then go into the chain. What is next am I going into the chain ? sorry i am a slow slow learner..

  • @cathyann3232 You are going through the center of the chain.

  • mine looked like a lopsided oval rather then a square? wonder why

  • Great. I just followed the video to make my first granny square.

  • Great. I just followed the video to make my first granny square.

  • Great. I just followed the video to make my first granny square.

  • I love it.

  • Ok... So, I made a huge blanket out of this square. But the side that was joined to start the next row ended up being longer. When I get a chance I'll take a picture of said blanket and see if someone can't help me figure out where I went wrong?

  • Thank you SO much! I've tried it a few times with a written pattern and it didn't work out. Now that I've found your video, I finally did it! Can't thank you enough!

  • @am375 You are welcome.

  • how come your DB crochet in some books called treble crochet???

  • It is the difference between American terms and UK terms. In America we call it the double crochet.

  • @madebyhandOoO Treble crochet is actually a term meaning triple crochet. Double is double. ;)

  • @peachesndreams1 Keep in mind you that the terms in the UK are different.

  • Thank You..Thank You... Thank You!!! I had to pause a couple times to catch up but your tutorial was AMAZING!!! Thank you so much I have been wanting to make granny squares for a long time....and now with your video I can!!!lol now I can't stop making them :)

  • You are welcome.

  • THANK YOU!!!

  • Love your video's! Really helped me in learning to crochet. Thank u very much and greetings from Holland!

  • Man, this video was so easy to follow. I've watched tons of videos and they all lost me :(

  • Thank you, I appreciate that.

  • Hello there, At the age of 53 I just got the urge to learn to crochet, failed until I found this, super, thanks a lot, love it to bits.

  • Thank you very much.

  • aw, you lost me at 0:56

  • can u use this type of square for a blanket?

  • Yes, you can keep making it larger.

  • thank you! i tried following from instructions from a very old book and it looked like a half circle square. lol. thank you. very easy to follow. much appreciated.

  • I am a complete beginner & your tutorial is excellent to follow I just stop video & follow. I can now crochet - so pleased with myself !!

  • See, now it's not really a problem of speed, because what I do is to stop the video at different sections, until I have caught up. I may do this several times, as I practice my stitches/patterns. I find the video's very helpful, and believe me, It takes me ages to learn something, I can't even programme the DVD or Video player. Just take your time MesaDonte, and it is so easy to stop the video when necessary. tjw, you're phonomenal as a teacher imo.

  • Thank you very much. I appreciate your comment!!.

  • From someone who is beginning on Crochetting...you are going WAAAAYYYY too fast...I understand that you are an expert but please realize when putting these videos up that not everyone is up to speed and it is very much discouraging to try to learn when you have a video going so fast that you cannot even keep up. Whats the point of teaching someone if you are not going in a slow manner.

  • The video player has pause and rewind. Maybe you should become familiar with the basic crochet stitches before working on this granny square.

  • ches. I found another video that explained it a little better! Thanks anyway!

  • Hi, your work is beautiful. I am trying to learn the granny square patter....no luck!! I have watched your videos again and again! Any advice?

  • thanks i have learned so much from watchig your videos .I cant stop lol

  • I appreciate the comment, thank you.

  • Good morning and thank you for all of your help with crochet. I was wonderinf if you have (or can suggest) a pattern for a half solid square. I love the half granny that you have but I need a solid one. Thank you in advance

  • could u still use this with red heart yarn?

  • You can use any brand yarn, any size yarn.

  • Hi...how do I keep from decreasing my goal length? Is that were I need to do the multiplication? If so how do i know how long and exactly what to multiply by what?

    Thank U

  • As long as you work your increase stitches in the corners, granny square automatically increase on each round. There is a multiple that is worked with the straight rows of crochet to figure the chain amount.

  • @tjw1963 thank u

  • I did this pattern and thanks. I added it to my baby blanket. I am 7 months pregnant and am making a blanket for her. I'm using a lot of you square patterns for it.

  • There are hundreds of ways to make granny squares.

  • I have watched your granny square videos over and over and over again. But for some reason my square is all jumbled and turns out to be a circle. I can't seem to get it. Any ideas? And then this video really freaked my frerak. It's completely different!! UGH!!!! I thought maybe using a bigger needle would make it easier. I was wrong. HELP, please.

  • ok i have a problem :( when i crochet and make the squares, they are not like square looking like the corners don't make it look like a square, what should i do???

  • You may be missing some stitches in the corner. I do have this square posted on my crochet blog. There are both written and symbol instructions. The symbol instructions will give you an idea where the stitches go.

  • ok thank you!

  • im 14 and i want to learn how to crochet better like for beginners and my grandmother or mother doesnt know how to could you please teach me ? i want to make something for the both of them for christmas well i hope you get back to me

  • I am so proud of myself!! I FINALLY got this; and its cute! Great demonstration!

  • Congratulations, it is always a great feeling when it makes sense. Thank you for the comment.

  • thank you so much, i am only in junior high but one time my grandma was crocheting and it amazed me so i asked her if i could try and she said sure so i started getting in to crocheting, my aunt just had a baby and i wanted to make her a baby blanket but i wanted it to be like cool looking so this is going to help in making a baby blanket, so thank you

  • Very easy & helpful demonstration - as always. Thank you!

  • i tried to crochet 1 time... it didnt go so well but i love to watch ppl crochet, it amazes me :)

  • Keep practicing and you will get the hang of it.

  • i love crochet and this is my first time making a granny square my cousin taught me how and i made more things than her

  • Thanks for the video! Easy to understand, I just started crocheting yesterday, and I've already made my first granny square thanks to this video!

  • I appreciate the comment.

  • Thanks!! made my first perfect granny square :D

  • thank you so much i have never even picked up a crochet hook but was dying to try granny squares and i learned so quickly because of this video. This is definitely by far the best one i have come across on youtube. Thanks so much i will be sure to check out your other videos.

  • thank you so much!!! you are the best!!!

  • i love to crochet and i was wondering , if i make a really big granny square and make it a blanket... would the sides of my square still be crisp and straight?

  • You and your crochet style will determine if your sides are crisp and straight. Sometimes it is easy to work faster as the rounds progress so the stitches become larger and more relaxed. This may create an uneven square.

  • I did exactly that! I crocheted a giant square for my son. I finished it by also crocheting shells all around. (some people call them shells, others scallops, or something like that, I just single crocheted all around, then crocheted five double crochets in each sc.

  • crochet 2 the extreme!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • thank you for this!!! i had such a hard time understanding how to make a granny square...can't tell you how many times i ripped my stitches out in frustration...finally did it YAY!

  • I am glad that you got it. Crochet is one of those things that you understand more as you practice. Some things may seem difficult but keep practicing and you will get it.

  • i had a quick question im a semi intermeadet crocheter i havent mad vary many things just a couple projects here and there and i was wandering in your oppinion what would be and easer blanket to make one with one granny square where i would just keep going around or a blankes made of multaple granny squares thanks in advance

  • The square that gets larger would be easier since you will not have to sew any squares together.

  • seems pretty simple

  • thanks i finally know how to do the granny square

  • i seriously think it would take me

atleast 20 minutes to do what you did in 6 minutes..

    x___x

  • Keep in mind that I did some editing so each square probably takes me 20 minutes in real time. It is not about the time and how fast you get it done. As you practice, you get faster.

  • Thank you!!! I decided to pick up crocheting, having only been taught double and single crochet and you made it easy for me to start on my first real project.

    Wonderful!

  • You are welcome. Write or comment any time if you need help finding something.

  • I just feel I have to thank you! I've learned to crochet from the very basics. I am now an intermediate crocheter and it's all from watching your videos! Thanks to you, my children have beautiful hand made blankies from their mama and I'm learning to do more! Thank you.

  • Thank you, I appreciate the comment. Your children will have wonderful memories to go along with the blankets you have made for them.

  • you go WAY TO FAST when teaching someone you need to go at a nice steady pace for beginners. please if you could send me a new one that would be great (a slower one). I had to go to someone else's page. thanks alot!

  • You are welcome to search the slow motion granny squares that I have had posted for several months. From what you wrote, it sounds like you have found what you needed some place else.

  • Actually she goes slowish compared to all the knitting programs ive seen on tv lol i cant follow them at all and ive been knitting for quite a while now lol
