¡Amazing and electrifying interpretation!... I could stay here, hearing this thousand times. I have no words to describe the color and energy that irradiates this performance... it is absolutely OUT OF THIS WORLD!!
That 'change' comes straight out of 3rd movement (Rondo: Allegro) in Beethoven's Piano Concerto No 5, the "Emperor". I was surprised to hear it myself haha.
It is a great performance, but I can see why Chopin called this piece not music at all and why Schumann's piano music was not understood in its time. It comes alive only in the last section. What's missing is melody--there's something "basic"-sounding about all these pieces. It's surprising that this piece is so well-known. But maybe I'm just not able to connecdt with it. I like the mood. I like the variety, the rythms, the chords...it just doesn't SING for me...
@alexmfrankel I know how you feel, I was confused too and I used to not like Schumann. I might be wrong, but I think it's that Schumann doesn't have the harmonic richness of Chopin and Liszt. Schumann isn't always "sung" sometimes it's "spoken" and you have to listen to the story, not the quality of the sound. Does that make sense?
@werq34ac I agree with your latter point: Schumann does not always 'sing' with his piano music but he does 'speak', being the consummate musical story teller. However, I would disagree that Schumann doesn't have the harmonic richness of Chopin or Liszt; maybe Schumann is more willing to be embrace the 'vulgar' in his music (as seen in Pierrot of Carnaval) in stark contrast to the unfailing grace of Chopin? Either way, I love both Schumann and Chopin!
Arrau is in much better technical control and more majestic, and as much as I love him, Horowitz's 1980 recordings of the Carnaval are wrecks, though more viscerally exciting.
Horowitz performed this in his relative youth, and revived it for the circa 1983 season. A recording (video too) is available of the Japan performance, but as you say it is a wreck. H was on medication for a psychological disorder and he had lost control of his abilities. Some good touches remain, but I can't recommend it as representative.
I am so proud to say that I come from his lineage of technique! I met him when I was 4...I wish I would have been older to remember it better :( Always one of the most amazing pianists to me. May he RIP <3
the old horowitz recording was really good, circ. 1918, much better than the newer one, Arraus stands on it's own in every way, both musically and pianisticlly, his hands were breaking in around the time he recorded this
In 1918, Horowitz was 15 years and old living in Russia. I doubt he made an recording then, since no recording technology existed in Russia at that time.
Arrau is so much freer here than he is in the late '60s LP he made for Philips. He is also amazing in another disc he made of this in the '30s...a totally different artist from what he was later in his career when his playing could be dry, uninvolved or peculiar. Perhaps it was burnout from the huge number of concerts he continued to give. But in this video, I think he was still in his prime. His playing has color, imagination and vibrancy...the real Schumann!
I'm trying to understand the context of Aveu. I have a little experience with French, but I'm not completely sure of the meaning of this excerpt I found:
Le terme « aveu » (du latin advocare, appeler ou avoir recours) désignait, à l'époque féodale, l'acte par lequel le serviteur reconnaissait son maître et le maître son serviteur.
Does that have anything to do with the Aveu that Schumann was referring to?
Also, interesting question, to add on another one, does the Aveu have to do with the Reconnaissance in the spirit of your definition? Musically, they are connected, in intervals and the 16th note rhythms. This Ab, C, B, C also begins the Davidsbuendler, fascinating..
That was one of the best Carnvals I've ever heard (never heard Arrau play it before)! As good as Rachmaninoff's version. Too bad the synchronization is off.
This is one of the best performances of "Carnaval" ever; even if the quality of the recording isn't exactly that good. There's a 1984 Horowitz live recording of this work (n You-Tube), but Arrau does a much better job.

I completely agree; Arrau had a deeper insight of Mozart Sonatas than any other pianist that I've listened to. Anyway, he recorded a good number of them --if not all-- chez Philips in the 1980s'. (I had never appreciated very some of much these works until I heard Arrau playing them)
About Richter's Schumann, I'll not deny its merit, but I agree with ibclappin: Arrau marked the 'Carnaval', as well as the 'Kinderszenen', etc., as his own. He has never been surpassed in this repertoire (and I would add that nor in Debussy, and in several Mozart's Sonatas...)
I believe that this performance is available by PHILIPS (digitally remastered from a register of the 60s'). As far as I know, the video recording was made in Amsterdam in 9/1966. I believe both of them, along with Rubinstein, are the greatest true piano artists and "thinkers" of the 20th century. So, enjoy Richter's unlimited "fire" and energy, and Arrau's wiseness and unique feelings.
Althoug I never liked Arrau, I must recognized him, as Spectrum says that he was one of the greatest pianists from last century and deserves all our respect, as a person, as a human been, and above all as an artist, tough I keep Richter as the top performer of Shummann ever.
You are right, superandyboy,"Richter as the top performer of Shummann ever"with Arrau a close second. For performances of Schumann one needs to look elsewhere.
Many people did not like Arrau. But I've never heard such an irrespectful idiot as Vano (Besides your comment is racist, you are judging appearance!). I personally like Arrau a lot. I think you your comments reflect your total ignorance about music and piano playing, as well as a total disrespect to one of the greatest artists/pianists of all time. Arrau, for many, was and has been THE GREATEST pianist/musician of the 20th century, far surpassing his contemporaries, Rubinstein, Horowitz, Richter and Serkin. With the possible exception of Rubinstein, he had one of the longest careers in music, (over 85 years playing in public and close to 7,000+ performances).
He had the biggest repertoire of any pianist (past and present), possibly the greatest piano technique, with the most beautiful singing sound, legato and polyphonic playing; and most importantly, he had a soul and wisdom that understood and was able to project all the music he played with far greater depth than any pianist. I was very fortunate to have heard him live many times during his old age and his playing was truly magical.
