Here rpeek, I made a slide for my guitar out of a piece of 3/4 in. diameter copper tubing out of our old heating system. I cut it, ground off the rough edges, and polished it, and it sounds pretty good. But pretty good to me could be anything...
That sounds like a good idea... I've got a piece of copper pipe out back.. I might saw it up and file it down and try it.. Thanks.. Why don't you play us a song with it..
We had a festival up here a few years ago where they flung a banjo from a catapult. The results weren't satisfying enough, so they made a banjo out of concrete and flung that. It exploded nicely on impact, so I hear.....
I broke the neck off an old wine bottle to make a slide (saw a tutorial video on youtube) by wrapping petrol soaked string round the neck. Works well but I can't play with the ruddy thing.
wow u r amazing with that banjo every time u play i wanna learn so no thanx 2 u im gunna tery and find me a banjo and try and learn how 2 play oh and gret dirty slide :) LOL
Cheapest slide I ever saw was when a neighbor of mine just butterflied a couple of aluminum beer cans, folded the sharp edges in, folded the whole thing to proper width, rolled it tight on a socket head with about the same girth as his finger, then welded the seam with a light touch from a plumbing torch. After he slid it off the socket, he painted it chrome & etched his initials in large script with a glass scorer. Cheap, pretty, & recycled.
I've often used Sears Craftsman sockets as slides, but never had the inclination (or the tools) to cut one up.
I also prefer glass, but I kept knocking them over and breaking them, so I put a piece of velcro on the slide and another on the back of my headstock. When I'm not using it, I just stick it on there and it's ready for my solos.
Your one amazing Banjo player! Fantastic tune!!

Hey, when is the greatest hits record coming out? :)

That's pretty far down on my list.. haha

I hadn't thought of a socket! I always remembered the bottle necks, and using a piece of copper tubing.
Wonder what a black-oxide socket would sound like?
A real deep spark plug socket would get you that extra length. Just need to find one that isn't knurled.
I've been wanting to make a brass one. The next time I put a order in for metal, I may tack on a piece!
Keep up the good work!

I just bought a bottle of Toasted Head Wine just because the neck is long and straight. Looks like it'll make a good slide.

You da man! I'm going to make me one.. haha

Hey, Rich. I have a glass slide that I have never used. I play guitar but never learned to "slide" it.
I would be happy to send it to you, no charge.
Reply to my email and I will set it up with you if you are interested.
Blessings,
George
