Your videos inspired me to tackle this on my own. I managed to get the bulb out. Now I can't seem to get it back in place :-(. The clip seems to be getting in the way. I was able to put the clip back in place without the bulb, but when I put the bulb in the hole, the clip judt eon't get into the right postion. I've tried 2 seperate days and am now frustrated. Do you have any suggestions??
So it took me way longer than 10 minutes, but mostly because I kept getting frustrated, and had to stop....but, I did it!! I feel like a car goddess now :-)
I followed this video and changed the passenger side bulb, then a year later changed the driver side bulb on our 2008 Prius. The driver side did not require removing any shields, though I did pop off the fuse box cover. It was very hard to unscrew the access cover, but after that it went fine, no tools required. My hands are about average size, and were a tight fit.
this was so awesome i spent an hour thinking about what would happen if i needed this done and the forums said it would be like $800 - $1000 but look at this! this is fantastic. Thank you so much, now if i only knew how to buy head lights because i want to change to bright blue head lights IDK the name
Thank you so much for the video. I actually just changed both the bulbs on my prius. What just helped me place the new bulbs in was by seeing through the hole through the front cover of the headlights. That way I knew exactly where the tip of the bulb was, and avoid touching/ scraping it.
Thank you so much for this video. It worked just perfect for me.
I just changed the bulb in a 2009. The only difference was the connection on the bulb just pulled right of the bulb.It was a three prong connection like the older headlight connections from years ago.The little wire clip was a bit of a challenge to get back like it should be. Many many thanks to you Sir.
Actually I'm a righty -- just worked better for me to hold the camera with and do the job with my left hand. There was one point in there where I had to switch to right -- much easier that way!
Thanks for the vid. I watched a few of them. Not sure how the heck you did it with one hand. I bought 2 - 25K HID off ebay for 55 bucks. Install both of them in less than 30 minutes. The 25k looks really weird while driving around.
Thank you so much for saving me 600 dollars. The hardest part is getting the clip back on correctly. I had to do the right side of my 07 prius which is a little harder because the fuse box is in the way. I just took the cover off the fuse box to open the plastic valve. 50 dollars for the bulb on amazon. Dealership wanted 150 for the bulb and 200 to install. Very Very helpful video.
I am so PISSED off at Toyota...6 months ago the driver-side went out and Toyota charged me $360 for replacing the bulb... the bulb! I feel like reading them the RIOT ACT! thanks for the video! ...so last weekend the passenger side went out and I ordered one from AMAZON... $50 ... I feel like a chump... Ill see if I can replace it myselfe... if I cannot, I'll feel like a bigger chump! haha anyways, thank you!
ps...let everyone know that it is the" Philips xenon D4R" for the 2007 Prius
Thanks Jay, was able to change my passenger side HID 2008 package #6 Prius just like you showed us. Amazing you can do this with one hand while filming and talking, that is what inspired me, if you can do this one-handed then pretty much anyone should be able to. Only took me 15 min. As I was testing the passenger side the driver side blinked out. BTW: my passenger side started going out intermittently at about 55K miles, and now my driver side started blinking at 64K miles.
Thanks for the video help bro. You made changing a ridiculously difficult bulb manageable. I did need to go out and get a inspection mirror. My 2007 had a clip to release in two places. Once I looked at it in the mirror, no problem. I changed both sides and didn't need the mirror for the other side since now knew what was in there. The Toyota Prius Owners Manual description is terrible (as is the dealer cost to change the bulbs). Thanks for saving a ton of people a lot of money!
Just changed 2006 driver's side with D4R Philips (it's what Luscious Garage uses) from Amazon for $52. One snag. There was a second metal clip holding the bulb. If the bulb doesn't release when you take the clip off look for a second clip on opposite side but lower. The philips brand has a a green dot which should be orientated straight up.
Thank you!!! BTW you can see the light go into the headlight. Makes it easier to get the bulb orientation straight IMO. Also if you need the cover out the way more the little plug on the inside comes off real easy (mine came off by accident). Gives you a little more room.
Where did you get your replacement bulb? I haven't had any luck finding it locally (at least not at a reasonable price), so do you have an online resource with reasonable prices?
thank you, thank you, thank you. I did it in 15 minutes. The one thing I couldn't do which other sites and videos said to do, was remove the main cable. Pushing,m wiggling, nothing worked, but your method of not even having to remove it was a god send. Also not having to remove the washer, etc. was brilliant. So one multi scewdriver, a mirror and a flashlight later, I'm $350 ahead of the game and I still have an extra replacement bulbs as the ones I bought came in 2s. So, thanks again

Nicely done video. It took me about 1/2 hour to replace passenger side HID on my 2008 Prius - 15 minutes of it was spent looking for a small mirror to get a bead on the clips that hold the bulb. The BIGGEST PAIN for me was the 5" diameter plastic cover that unscrews slightly - moving it out of the way then putting it back was a little frustrating. By the way, my 2008 has 52K miles on it and we have the lights on day/night. This has been the only "abnormal" maintenance on the car in my mind.
Jay, you are the man! thank you so much for posting this video. It gave me the information and confidence I needed to perform this relatively simple task that looked more complex on other videos! I'm not handy with car work (software engineer), but following your instructions worked like a charm.
Just one note for the next person to see this: when inserting the new bulb, position it so that the two extrusions on the plastic cap are aligned horizontally. Also, the long glass tube should be on
great help. my wife's prius had been having headlight trouble for months. the dealership prices are outrageous and as of now there is no recall - frightening!!!!!!!!!!!
