  • Us brits dont need to see how nuclear war would make this a shit hole. This country is already like this through moral, law and judicral destruction! this wil happen in about 2030! all because of fuckin immigrants and most brainwashed british sheeple fall for thir sob stories! even without the effects of this film, the way life here at present matches it!

  • There be evil in that thar mushroomcloud.

  • @TheWindowBeside and probably a few kilos of cannabis depending on what part of sheffield it landed on

  • I'd consider myself lucky to have been killed in the inital blast if this ever happened...there's no way I'd rather die of radiation poisoning.

  • Is that face meant to be at 7:17 in middle down?

  • No doubt Ruth recognises some of those corpses as people whom she used to know -- friends of hers, now mangled and burnt to a crisp!

  • The fact that I have the same name as one of the characters (Ruth) makes this movie ten times more disturbing to me. :[

  • Imagine coping in the confines of a cellar or some other kind of crude shelter with no running water, no power, no working toilet, no ventilation, and the symptoms of radiation poisoning- persistent thirst, nausea, vomiting and lots of diarrhoea.

  • @hill9868 and to make matters worse you end up sharing it with someone who has just had a chicken vindaloo!

  • Hey, that's the monk in Robin Hood in 03:22 !! What a great tv series!

  • Doggy : (

  • I really felt upset when they found Michael i hugged my mom after i saw that scene.

  • smoke weed errday

  • @AlchemicGnosis That episode is the reason I'm watching all this!

  • imagine bein stuck behind a door with a wife like that...i reckon i wd jus hav to strangle her and throw her outside..post-apocalyptic society would probably be a pickup artist's dream anyway-no point bein lumbered with some old baldy hag..the second she said 'i wish i were dead' i would give her a good smack on the head and then throw her out to die in the fallout..then get meself spruced up for a night on the pull with a tin of beans for bait..

  • @noclass33 lovely. i thought you only came across your type of mentality in the book TOBACCO ROAD. its nice to know that it isnt just people who look like something out of DELIVERANCE or out of a bad jeff foxworthy skit that qualify for the title of WHITE TRAILOR TRASH. cheers mate

  • @u2joshuadesireu

congratulations on mentioning that you have read a book..this doesn't give u intellectual bragging rights over me though-i have also read a book or two...here's a tip though-there's no 'o' in trailer...u eejit u-try a sense of humour transplant..

  • In this situation, make all the inner refuges you want, you're going to get sick and die of radiation sickness. I'd rather die in the blast. There's no point in living after something like this. You can't grow anything in the soil, either, the cattle who eat the vegetation that's left over will die too. There's just no winner to a nuclear war. Period.

  • @SupaBriMan26 all that for the greedy asses of government officials... love that world!

  • amen dukes amen god bless u for that thought

  • movies like this shud b a lesson to us all get rid of the weapons now,

  • 4:38 ... get a container first!

  • 7:10 - Nothing like drinking radioactive water to give you an energy boost.

  • The Swiss are much better prepared for nuclear attack than any other country; their civilian population and society would be in much better shape than Britain's.

BTW There were some in the US Government and Pentagon who believed wiping out the human race was a price worth paying for "defeating" Communism. Talk all you will about Ahmadinajed, there are plenty of nutjobs and fanatics in the Pentagon.

  • funny detail: some of them are smoking

  • it seems like this depicts the after effect of entire Nuclear Warfare in our world i tyhink if something on this scale ever took place the world, the entire world would be gone why worry aobut mother nature destroying us we should worry about ourselves destroying this planet for the greater good of god

  • @AlchemicGnosis Hmm... well there was that one episode with the bomb... that turned out to be a plane's egg.

  • i wonder why they didnt replace nukes with neutron bombs. you could kill the people and leave the city intact.

  • Wonder if the Us and soviet leaders watched this film when it was screened. I'm sure it provoked a few nightmares for many people during this period. I'm not sure i would want to hear that air attack warning, its a well scary noise. They should play Two Tribes by Frankie goes to Hollywood instead.

  • @Jimjam1212

I almost pissed my pants as a child.

Me and a friend were having a boxing match in the garden - I heard the siren!

    Momentarily, I shat myself!

It turned out to be a TV programme in the house.

But THAT sound was always in our heads - we were almost waiting for the inevitable here in the UK.

  • I heard they really did drop a nuclear bomb on Sheffield. It did £3.50's worth of damage. Only kiddin. Ive never actually been there but i'm sure it has its charms.

  • @Jimjam1212 Piss Off ;)

  • I'd like to know more about what is being said on the radios.

  • @2:44 bloody typical. All this goin on an no fags.

n.b. to Americans, fags are cigarettes.

  • @markoj34 I'd be pissed off, no use in clean living when the world is all in ashes anyway.

  • i dont think we will ever move beyond this point in our time maybe later in generations to come will realize what could possibly happen even todaay the threat is still real

  • Mankind belongs in an Insane Asylum.

  • christ... there's no point in conventional warfare, let alone nuclear

  • war rarely has a point.. will we ever move beyond this insanity?

  • @Gmancrap

    Tell that to the Rwandans.

  • In Rwanda they only had machetes and still hundreds of thousands died. You're talking crap.

  • In the holocaust MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS OF JEWS DIED, In japan a total of 80,000 even possible more died at the hands of you white men, not blacks. 400,000 people died at your hands with agent orange and 500,000 children born with birth defects still going on might I add. Its unknown how many exactly native Americans parishes due to you white men but around 112.5 million people is the current number. Check and mate I would give up if I where you because you are wrong.

  • Funny that you mention Japan, considering the destruction the Japanese wrought on their neighbours. There was a distinct lack of white men at the Rape of Nanking.

It's hilarious, not to mention racist, that you think black people are less brutal or capable of mass destruction than whites. The only thing stopping death on the same scale in Africa is the lack of technology, organisation, industrialisation and nation states needed to fight the sort of wars that 'we white men' unfortunately have.

  • cont.

I mean Christ, it isn't like they haven't tried. Countless civil wars, millions dead or maimed by landmines, children drugged and forced into battle... and it's still going. I don't see what gives you the fucking moral high ground.

  • so your saying that having technology makes you a better man? some hunk of plasic that can project images is your muse?

  • Don't know where you got that idea from. Struggling much?

  • @JaffacakeKiller99: Oh F*** off, would you? We already have enough racists here.

  • @MiracleMile90

Saying 'we're all as bad as each other' isn't racism, it's realism. I would've thought you would be more concerned with the guy implying caucasians are genocidal maniacs.

    Nice self-censoring there.

  • @JaffacakeKiller99: Sorry, guess I was a little rough with you :-/.

{I don't like what that other guy said either, TBH...............hopefully it clears things up}.

  • Christ , its what is brilliant about these documentaries , they really show the Human tradegy - there should be an international resolve , and perhaps prayer that this will never happen

  • Christ, it's a week after the attacks. I'm pretty sure that acceptance would have set in by now. Just look at the history of the survivors of the bombings in WW2.

  • Today, a typical urban area with a population of 1 million would probably receive 5-12 nukes with yields in the 200-450 kt range (through ICBM delivery). Smaller yields would only mean more dispersed targets, so you'd get a total yield in the ~2.5 megatons range.

Most naive scenarios only consider a "bullseye" hit over downtown, but in reality, with ICBMs, the whole urban area gets nuked. Typically, nukes would be dispersed so that they don't damage each other (due to current explosions).

  • @hdufort

shut th fuk up u reject on main area would get hit

  • What are you talking about? learn to spell also...

  • @hdufort what? who would bother nuking a city 12 times? i dont even think the soviets were that stupid.

  • as einstien said it best said it best he didnt know what or how world war 3 would be fought but he knew how world 4 would be fought with sticks and stones

  • At the end of the day it never happened - nor is likely to - I studied this for 4 years at uni - an this scenarios was so unlikely it was stupid.

  • OK... When did this movie become a halmark for the British & Yanks to crucify each other!?! Take it down a notch! This film and the others like it were a plea for sanity, NOT a call for random rants of national agression! (If you ask me... The world will not become a safer place until we can stop all the ultra-nationalist finger pointing & race bashing!) And to the dude that claims to be the 'USAsoldier', I pray that your niether! For your a disgrace to BOTH!

  • @dukes0916 amen iam so glad u said that my brother is in afagnistan right now and i worry something awful iam and american and i respect all ppl whether there here in the united states orfrom another country so bless u sir we need to pull together and stop this hatred ty so much pizzaman147

  • @dukes0916

i agree with you whole heartedly . These ultra-nationalist sentiments that so many people hold will be our undoing as a global society.

"Blind patriotism is the dog tag of an unwitting slave."

  • Has anyone read the Peshawar Lancers?

  • Well, I think after watching this movie, that in reality, Britain would be closer to the War Game, not necessarily reverting to medieval levels, and the US would be something like the Day After. I think that this movie is a little TOO negative about recovery. This is basically the setup from Fallout.

  • Actually the movie diod understimete the casulties, as it used the bes t case scenario.

Also the level of radiation would be much higher with new developed nuclear waepons since the 1980's.

So all in all it would be an optimitic scenario and, yes, I agree, not very realistic.

  • It would be nice if they could do a reboot of this so they could have the budget for some great special effects

  • thats not really the point.

  • Seems that the older couple that was hiding under the doors was the paragon for the older couple in "When the wind blows" ...

  • This was made in 1984. If it had been set today that town council nuclear shelter where the bloke asks for a cigarette would have been NO SMOKING!!!

  • Anyone who stocked up would find that someone came round after the attack and shot them to get their food - especially in America which is the land of the gun!

  • That is why one who stocks food should also be smart enough to stock bullets too! He who beats his sword into a plow will soon be a slave to those that didn't!

  • Sorry says the US the land of marrying ur cousins or livestock and shooting your own fucking family!

  • I recommend a docu channel film called 'World Without Humans' or a similar title. It showed how much better a place the world would be without humans.

The Bible goes on about dominion over all things. Trash! Humans are the worst kind of creature imaginable. The world would be well shot of them. Think about it: what have humans done which is of any benefit to the world?! Nothing. That's crystal clear.

  • pix - practice what you preace, you know? lead the way.

  • The bloke who said "I know it sounds callous but we should hang on to what food we've got" is fat andmay find that this is a good time to go on a diet!

  • But that fat man must of known that once all their food had run out he himself would be on menu.

  • Having lived in earthquake country for 14 years, San Francisco, I keep a weeks supply of power bars and water not only in my house, but my car and the bottom drawer of my desk at work.

We´re only three missed meals from revolution, be prepared, folks!

Catch On the Beach, 2000, complete on YouTube!

  • Of course these days in england despite a nuclear attack and high radiation levels, you would have to go outside for a smoke !

  • I was 12 when I first saw this. I didn't understand until now. How heartbreaking that all these people went through this.

  • What with nobody having lived through something such as this before, the advice about survival/recovery was most questionable to the extreme. The most sage recommendation concerning this is, "Prevention is better than cure."

  • The one guy says "A lot of people just didn't stock up" ... but earlier in the movie we hear the government telling people panic buying is unnecessary ...

  • True but no one seemed to have any supplies at all. Everyone should always keep at least a weeks worth of food and water in case of an emergency or some sort of natural disaster. When that huge blackout in the US happened a few years ago and the water wouldnt run i was the only one with any decent supply of water and lucky for some of my neighbors i did. its always good to be prepared for an emergency.

  • Comment removed

  • chris3325, you're quite right about people needing to be prepared. Most people think vaguely they'll gather a supply of stuff "when they have time" and then the emergency hits and they're caught short. I'm no shining example myself; I've got bits and pieces but nothing like the organized emergency kit you're advised to have.

  • Finnish/Scandinavian suicide rates? Americans kill each other several times more.

  • "We should nuke Russia and China tomorrow because :

    - they don't expect us to

    - the technological gap between us and them is at its high point, especially regarding China.

    - we have a 90% chance of a successful first strike."

It's frightening but in times of international crisis there are probably people high up in positions of power who may think like this. It's that sort of thinking that got us into the arms race in the first place. Fuck all the war-mongers

  • "we have a 90% chance of a successful first strike."

How naive. Russia has great nuclear forces based on triad. It's not possible to nuke Russia without their "second strike".

  • 7:15 That's horrible.

  • The incredible folly of men

  • "We should nuke Russia and China tomorrow because :

    - they don't expect us to

    - the technological gap between us and them is at its high point, especially regarding China.

    - we have a 90% chance of a successful first strike."

EVEN if you take out the silo based Russian nukes, there would still be ~1000 nukes in mobile launchers, like submarines, Bombers and mobile Topol launchers.

And many of China's ICBM's are mobile as well.

    Successful first strike? Yeah right.

  • The smart ones went to the poorer (less likely to be attacked) regions.

Also I guess this is why one day we may have to go subterranean.

  • man those lean-to shelters are useless. The dust would get in. You'd have a better chance of just covering your mouth and attempting a run out of the irradiated zone away from wind currents.

  • But run where? The whole country was bombed.

  • Lol British bureaucracy at it's best

  • Are you crazy^^ You would not win, you think, you would strike first?? Do you mean with the big, slow rockets?? No chance, no way.

-who expects a nuklear fight now?? Where do you know from, that russia isn't attacking now (or tomorrow)?

    -Russia has better Nuklear-defending systems

    -Obama doesn't want any nukes

I say, tomorrow they will let explode 10 nukes over USA in space, and you are fucked off already -.-

  • LOL... do you have any idea how deep we could fuck you Russian/slavic homos if we wanted to ???

The 90% figure is actually from a UN report and it was presented as a threat to world peace because we are now in such a dominant position we could indeed strike first if we wanted to with little or no fear of retaliation.

Russia is forever in the toilet of History, it's so sad we'll have to use state of the art nukes over rusty SS18's China however is an emerging threat and it's rising...

  • Nukes old hat. The vacuum bomb is a new more preferable weapon as it doesn't create radiation allowing quick ocupation of bombed areas. By the way the russians have the most powerful version of the vacuum bomb.

  • It's called a thermobaric weapon... it sucks the oxygen out of the atmosphere. Hardly a WMD since its kill radius is a few hundred meters at best and as you said it doesn't threaten armor or hardened structures.

Nah, if the Russians piss us off we'll just spray Mother Russia with a super high tech brand new germ weapon we developed. It kills ALL potatoe plants ! :o No potatoes -> no vodka -> the Mujiks kill themselves :)

  • "Hardly a WMD since its kill radius is a few hundred meters at best' It is equivalent to an atomic bomb (russia has replaced all most of it's small nuclear weapons with thermobaric weapons) it creates imense pressure and heat which will damage armour and structures plus this is what they are declaring they have not what they actually have. Following the end of ww2 i think they aquired the german scientists who were originally working on these as russia has been a pioneer in them since.

  • Bunkum.

  • Please start digging your hole so you and your paranoia can get down in there! We don't need ya up here anymore.

  • I'm not paranoid mate I think war is the last thing anybody needs. Just out of interest which part of what i said was "bunkum"?

  • Your notion about Russia's weaponry. God, don't people read BOOKS anymore? Google fries the brain.

  • I saw a news report both in russian and american. Books go out of date you know. I read plenty by the way.

  • INo verification for any of your claims about hyperbaric weapons. Don't use Wikipedia as a source again!

  • I didn't and I'll do what I like thankyou. The report is available on youtube look it up under Russia tests world's most powerful bomb. I'm sure Gen. Com. Alexander Rushkin or John Pike the director of the global security organistation didn't get their info from wikipedia. So come on where did you get your info you have presented no evidence to contradict anything I have stated.

  • Youtube also is not a verifiable or acceptable source of information, since no checks and balances exist on it. (Unlike a peer-reviewed publication.) Youtube is an entertainment format.

Thermobaric weapons are small and conventional chemical bombs. But nuclear weapons produce explosions several k€ilometers wide that seethe with gamma and hard X-rays.

So, yes, thermobaric wepons exist, but in no way do they approach the destructiveness of strategic nuclear weapons.

  • Whatever your obviousley the expert on everything and know all about weapons. I'm sure the kremlin, the pentagon and the whitehouse go to you for all their info. I bet you even know who jack the ripper was or who was the extra gun man on the grassy knowle. Was a television news report mate not something joe bloggs knocked up and put here. Get over it.

  • Right, TV reports are never exaggerated or sensationalized. That's not the issue, though.

The issue is that hyperbaric weapons are tiny and tactical in use. Nuclear weapons are far more destructive and deadly in their long-term effects.

We'll recall your statement: "Nukes old hat." Hardly. You're talking about little battlefield weaponry against 1-megaton city busters. Glad you're impressed by what you consider shiny new things, but you don't really know what you're talking about.

  • Far better to control a country than destroy it as our american friends will agree. To drop a nuclear weapon would be less desirable than dropping a weapon that has fewer if no serious after effects. The area can be rapidly occupied again imediately after, reconstruction of that country can begin under the order of the occupying country. Land control is more important than weapon power.

  • Oh. Which country needs your euphemistic controlling?

Wow, Hitler talked about Leningrad in much the same manner as you.

  • What? I think your getting angry no need to it's only a discussion.

  • You talk of occupying countries and genocide.

  • Yes I talked about what happened in Iraq. Do I agree with it no. Did we all benefit from it in the western world. Yes. Now there lies a true argument as to what we do about that.

  • What? I don't understand your grammar.

I don't know what benefit the western world got from attacking women and children in Iraq. And many western countries refused to take part in that effort, to no detrimental effect.

The old ways just get ... older.

  • Oil mate thats what the world runs on wake up. Those that didn't take part still use it.

  • That's what the world USED to run on, but as societies grow and become more complex, we will need new ways of living together.

That's the true wake-up call. The old tribal ways, religion, war, suspicion, just don't work anymore--if ever they did.

  • El135o:

    I totally agree

  • The US and Russia obviously believe there is some merit in this as they are both developing and testing these weapons. How do you know that they haven't developed these bombs to the point where they may rival the capability of small nuclear weapons?

  • I don't make guesses and then believe in them. That's for paranoid people.

And small nuclear weapons ... like 450 kT? Hmmm, you're talking in too may generalities here.

  • Russia has replaced some of it's small nuclear arms with thermobaric weapons. Do you understand the point I'am making? Why didn't the US just nuke Iraq? Because it would have rendered the oil eneconomical to extract. They did however use thermobaric weapons. Why do we not have huge battleships anymore? Because the art of war changed and they became obsolete no matter how powerful they were. Nukes take a lot of maintenece thermobaric weapons i'm sure would take a lot less.

  • Battleships have been decommissioned? When?

Replacing a 5-kT weapon, great. But strategic weapons are still there.

  • God, don't people read BOOKS anymore? Right I give in Im not entering any further in to this battle of wits with somebody as clearly unarmed as yourself. happy ignorance.

  • Yes, I saw on TV that US Navy is still quite in evidence.

The "art of war"--good God, is this archaic attitude still around? I thought it died out with McCarthyism.

It's not an argument, since your claims are based on WIKIPEDIA AND YOUTUBE, for God's sake.

  • Ah the tv exactly where my info came from. Hypocrisy is also an archaic word any comments on that?

  • Sure, saw visuals and a story about life on a naval BATTLESHIP.

I didn't say archaic words, I said archaic attitude, about your invocation of "the art of war." Sun Tzu was an old Chnese guy who was talking about spears and swords!

  • Read it I think you'll find it has more in it than talk about spears and swords. A lot of business men seem to have found merit in it. It has quite a bit of psycology in it.

  • Great, moneychangers learning how to take each other on as adversaries. Yeah, self-serving, greedy businessmen probably watched _Wall Street_ and got the idea there. Since when is a loan shark a paragon of human development?

  • I don't know what your on about now. The book is not archaic if it has use today. So the world doesn't run on oil anymore? Since when? What planet are you on? I give up take me to your leader oh wise one. Lol

  • Having use and someone thinking it has use are notn the same thing. Using war tactics on Wall St. is just plain STUPID. Even in 'Wall Street' you learn that.

I didn't say the world doesn't run on oil. Where did you conjure that from?

  • Early '90s with the last four Iowa-class battleships.

(though the Iowa is still maintained as part of the reserve fleet)

You get more bang for your buck with carriers. Even the Indians are building their own class of carrier.

  • Thermobaric by the way.

  • Then tell me, why aren't you wanted??^^ Because you can't risk anything, you'll die with the russians... If you trie to fuck them, they'll fuck you. too- That's it. It's like 1000 times it happened in history... You're in a dominant position?!? What about the global economial crisis?? Who's fault was it... Yeeeees, the american's.Russia's got enough energy, they don't need to sell anything, and you don't. You have to buy. But from who?

I just know, that the Chinese will be in near future theNo.1

  • We've got plenty of coal and natural gas available. The Powder River Basin of Wyoming is one of the largest coal deposits on the planet. And we've got the vast open spaces of the Great Plains for wind energy, and the Southwest for solar. The question is not so much energy, as who's going to continue lending us the money needed to finance our balance-of-trade deficits. The Chinese are already making noises about diversifying away from US Treasuries and wanting an increase in SDRs.

    cont'd:

  • The Chinese will be No. 1 as soon as they develop domestic demand. ATM, they're too dependant on exports, especially to the US.

But that may not take more than about 10-15 years. And actually, the Indians probably won't be far behind.

The Russians are relying too much on their energy reserves, and that's hurting them with the drop in both prices and demands. They can get short-term gain, but they're not building a long-term economy like China and India are.

  • "the technological gap between us and them is at its high point"

"we have a 90% chance of a successful first strike, meaning total destruction of the enemy with no retalition on U.S mainland."

You idiot sir. Seem you never hear about early warning systems, long range detection radars, recognizing satellites etc. Many of their nukes are highly mobile and ready to launch in one minute.

If you attack Russia you will be 100% fucked everywhere in USA with their massive nuclear arsenal

  • True, Russia currently has in comission the ss-18 Satan which has a massive throw weight and multiple war heads which will make it impossible to shoot down succesfully and the throw weight almost guarantees a first strike with incredible damage.

  • @gearsofwar357 Russia decommisoned a lot of their satans and a lot of em are rotting in silos outside of russian borders since the break up of the USSR, so they still have some, but no where near cold war levels.

  • How close are we now to this

  • It is unlikely we will ever face this scale of attack today because, despite belief at the time, there are very few countries with *that* amount of clout that would want a nuclear war.

  • How close did we come to this for real in the 70's and 80's.

  • I would hate to get radiation poisoning , i would rather die instantly , or be in a 10 meter thick lead bunker

  • They didn't have the budget to make graphics or huge tons of rubble for the set.

In fact if the those buildings wouldn't be standing.

  • Life after the mushroom doesn't look very interesting. :/

  • what you think it would be like mad max or something

  • It would be like nothing for many.

For the others (if possible), it would be just painful.

I doubt about the human surviving capacity. :/

  • They're not making kids watch this any more, as much as it scared the hell out of me as a lad and still does I think it should be required viewing for a long time to come.

Nothing else hits home like this, a generation with this burned into their memories is better than one without.

  • In the end hundreds of thousands survided working on farms using coal, steam powered machinery and allthe kids had shit education and used a new type of garbled english. their all back in the medeval age but with steam power.

  • go's show in a nuclear we are all in the shit

  • why should "grey haired" be an insult? Do you have a mother?

  • Wasn't intended as an insult; it was more of a way of describing who the stupid bitch was.

Also, if you watch the whole movie, you'll know that in escaping the basement shelter, Ruth survives after looters whack her "mum" and "da" and take their food.

  • When you say someones a bitch aren't you insulting them? Ruth was selfish leaving her parents alone in that basement to killed by those thugs. It would have been far better for her to have died with her parents in that basement than to have given to a mutant baby.

  • Are you serious? It was better for her to have died?

    Riiiight.

And she was selfish to choose survival over being murdered?

    Uh huh.

Her baby, by the way, wasn't a mutant, or deformed in any way. As a matter of fact her daughter had a passing resemblence to Alison Hannigan. Hardly a mutant.

Her mom *was* being a selfish bitch- "you need to stay here and die with me" instead of "I'm old, I'm gonna die. You have a chance. Go and live. At least try."

    That's a selfish bitch.

  • Very Good Docudrama, kind of hit home from hoe close weve come to this before. Still a good watch and makes you think.

  • They made me watch this a primary school in 1985, i was 10, it scared the shit out of me!!!

  • yeah funny how the ruling classes start all this shit and then hide in bomb proof bunkers and guard all the food to they can live in luxury while the poor fools who have had to tolerate these filth ie, us are left to rot

  • but they all died in the end anyway, didn't they?

  • "On a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero." -Tyler Durden.

  • I'm in Watford, about 3 miles from Northwood HQ. I'll be fucked if it all kicks off!

  • this si so much better than The Day After - those brits know how to shoot a disaster film
