I am a guy too and while I wouldn't say it affected me *quite* that profoundly, I join you in saluting any Molly Gibsons. :-) I was also quite moved by her principles, love, and self-sacrificing spirit. This was a great drama and, in my opinion, one of the last truly great ones from the BBC. (Though I am aware some will disagree.)
@peymaania Judging by the first couple minutes (I've never seen this) it looks like the 1810's, when corsets were actually unusually soft and more comfortable. These women are more lucky than their daughters and granddaughters.
@MekoHewley, if you're talking about the mini-series than yes, it's excellently acted, paced and cast. Mrs. Gaskell's book, I found, was very much an excercise in (superb) character studies, and marvelloous vignettes.

I am a guy and watched this for the first time in 2009 summer. My entire outlook on love changed. I salute all the Molly Gibsons of the world.

Terrific relationship acting between Justine Waddell and Bill Paterson.
