The same has been going on here in Germany too. The "punishment" often was that they sent the priests to other towns, provding them with unsuspecting new victims. People here know about that, and they have also heared about the cases in Ireland and America. Sadly most of them seem to feel compelled to make up excuses for the church instead leaving it. :(

Yeah, only about 1% of all priests actually did this. A person is more likely to get abused by a non-celibate person that a celibate one.
