I got this with Tekken Tag on the PS2 at launch. Best 2 games you could buy on the day (and the first 2 ever to be made for it oddly). Best RR game IMHO, fuckin' hard though.

The UK version had black borders, so the screen look squashed, plus the back of the car was half missing. Cars felt a bit heavy and it didn't seem to be very challenging. After the N64 and DS versions, this is the 3rd worst version in the series.
Perfect handling? When? When you let off the gas it acted as if you hit the breaks and your back end wanted to go first. Feels like the one time I almost wrecked my truck in a snow/ice storm. There are much better racing games for the PS1, Master System, SNES and the PS2 vs this game. Rant over.
No more sequels were made on PS2 unlike how Ridge Racer went to RR Revolution to Rage Racer and then RR Type 4.
Also although I love Gran Turismo, I really hated the gaming media and gamers critisizing Ridge Racer for not being realistic when its an arcade style racing game
Just look at Namco's other progress with Soul Calibur II to SCIII and TekkenTT, Tekken 4 to Tekken 5 on PS2 basically shutting the f up on critics of PS2 tech which was great hardware 4 its time & still has great software

I also beat RR7 cannot do anything about nitrous, Fast and Furious movie overhyped it but I got 100% on RR7, I was RR8 PS3 only.
Ridge Racer V is actually a great game, better than Type 4 in some respects, you really have to play this game in hard mode with ALL of the cars to really appreaciate what namco did with this game that was technically not even taking full advantage of the PS2 since it was made as a CD-Rom format game instead of a DVD-Rom and had to make the launch schedule, had Namco not had to ship this game as a launch game and they would have made it as a DVD it would have been bigger

I'd say on the compute side it has moved on quite a bit. PC video cards from 96-06 prolly have over a 1000 fold increase in fill rate. To the observer though the shift from 2D sprites to 3D texture mapped polygons on the PlayStation has been the biggest jump in graphics in the home and I figure will always be the biggest jump in graphics.
Computers stopped getting faster though around 2002 due to power density issues but continue to become ever more functional, processing more data in parallel.
We won't see compute increases as dramatic as in the 90's until we move onto more exotic technologies.

Ratchet and Clank, God of War, Gran Turismo and Metal Gear are all game franchises exclusive to Sony I don't believe to be hype. If all you care about is the cleanest graphics you should go PC. I don't see where PS2 missed out on graphics with the games I own.

this game sux...i have it on PS2 and it stinks. Gameplay is crap and the screen is squashed down so the car looks like its been stepped on. I've tried to setup the screen but nothing works.

Play RR on the PSP, it has better gameplay, graphics and all the music from all the RR games.

2: psp is more than a gaming system, its got: music, videos, pictures, games, internet, telephone, radio, camera and gps. if you have the money that is.

i didnt say portable sux, just that when it comes to racing car games i prefer to play it through the xbox or PS. I do like portabl games but just not ridge racer, i've played ridge racer on playstation2 and it sucks balls.

Ridge Racer is all about fun in all the sides, esp. Racing game noobs.
A great alternative after playing Test Drive, Gran Turismo, or Ferrari Challenge, and loosen up the seriousness of realism to some forgiving action.

the games i like are Outrun 2, juiced, forza motorsports, thats about it i think. but i dont play these games anymore cuz i sold them.
i dont really play anything nowadays, except for Phase and sims pool for the ipod classic =)

It WOULDN'T have been one of the best arcade games, WOULDN'T have been a launch title for, let's see, the PS1, 2, 360 and PS3, and it WOULDN'T have been the best selling Japanese launch game for the PS3, if it were the "shittest raving game" you say it is.
