  • Don't degrade the dancers. 'Cause jazz is real music to dance to. Not crappy disco or that shitty house music.

  • Listen to Krupa's drum work on China Boy from the Carnegie Hall concert. Unbelievable.

  • Keep in mind that Gene was roughly 57 years old when this was filmed! Past his prime perhaps but still Damn good.

  • GROOVE INDEED. Um Travis who? Not even close to the hairs of Gene's bum.

  • this man was a legend...

travis is not a bad drummer but there's no possible comparison

  • um, is it bad that i have no idea who travis barker is......but know mr. krupa? or is this a good thing?

  • @michaelspadaro6

My excellent friend...you have an UNCLUTTERED MIND and EXCELLENT TASTE!!!!

  • @michaelspadaro6 nope its a good thing having heard travis barker i assigned him to the "who" section of my memory

  • KISS's Peter Criss was "trained" by Krupa for about 6 months...

  • k seriously, travis barker is my favorite drummer of all time but people need to realize that because someone's their favorite it in no way means that, that person is the best by any means, while i love travis there's no denying krupa is levels above him, people need to learn some common sense

  • @partyboyrocks69 hes not better than travis you dipshit retard can he play a fucking whole tour with 1 broken arm dumbass i fucking dont think so get a life noob

  • @4against1 noob?! oh my gosh! k you've been playing for probably no more than a month, you just made yourself look like an idiot in front of the entire drumming community for posting such an ignorant comment, you know the drummer from def leppard? yeah he's been playing with one arm since 84 and not because it was broken it was fucking amputated, take your "noob" ass off this page and find another video to show the world just how big an idiot you are, like i stated i love travis but krupa wins

  • Odd seeing Krupa on a gold sparkle Slingerland set.

  • Wow. On two different videos of sing sing sing, I see one top rated comment bashing travis barker, the other defends him. Barker is good. Krupa dominates.

  • Gene Krupa is the God of swing drummers, I like his style! He play with heart and amazing feeling, Rich is good but I dont like his ego on drums.

  • @edwardconway27 you havent heard Hampton then have you...check him out...

  • This is from The Dean Martin Show, you can't lay blame on the Sax player, there was a rehearsal prior to this, everything had to be ok with Mr. Krupa beforehand, also the unnecessary dancers in the background along with another drummer and flute player and additional musicians off camera were what throws it off a bit.

  • I wish you had the whole tune here...but wow!

  • Benny Goodman live at Carnegie Hall, SING SING SING

  • I ask that everybody stop responding to the Travis Barker comments. They're all made by the same dipshit kid. He has a countless number of screen names and comes on all the videos of the great jazz drummers and insults them. By responding to him, we're just giving him what he wants. He's purposely doing this to piss people off, and gets enjoyment from pissed off reactions that he gets. So please stop responding, because the more we respond, the more he'll keep at it. Don't feed the trolls!

  • ''things wouldn't be the way they are if he hadn't been around'' - Buddy Rich

  • I can't believe there are comments about Travis Barker in videos like this. I don't think he's good at all. All he does it beat the hell out of the drums like a hyperactive child. No technique, dynamics, or finesse. Please just stop, you're embarrassing yourselves.

  • there is so much finesse going on here

  • This man beat the drums like a fierce drag car taking off the line.

  • you can talk about how Rich amazing solos, how popular travis barker is but when it comes to SWING Gene would put any drummers in the whole universe into shame and misery. The God of swing , long live Krupa!

  • Words of advice for the Barker fan: There's nothing worng with digging Travis Barker, I like him, just not to the extent that i would say he is the best. Look at all the old school drummers like Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, and then move to Neil Peart & Dennis Chambers, and then to Ray Luzier of Korn and Josh Freese. You will find that the more drummers you check out, the more talent that's out there besides Barker.

  • All these stupid Travis Barker comments are made by the same dumbfuck kid. He has a bunch of different screen names like Travisbarker4prez and Travisblink4ever, and countless more. He comes on all the jazz drummer videos and insults all the great jazz drummers talking about how Travis is better and all that. He's basically just a self-esteem movement pussy who has nothing better to do with his life than spend his entire day insulting great jazz drummers. Truly a pathetic life he leads.

  • why do i hear all this shit about travis barker? he's good as fuck but he's more like the poser's poster boy. give me a break, if you think travis barker is the be all/end all of drummers, you just haven't heard enough music. plain and simple

  • dude, Gene Krupa is AWESOME!!

  • Its about TIME folks.

  • those dancers in the back are a joke...

  • Dont get me wrong, Gene Krupa is the best!!! but he is the best at big band playing along with Buddy Rich. Sadly in quartet and trio playing like this he can not be compared to the greats of this genre such as Max Roach and Tony Williams. On a lighter note, Im 13 and Jazz is the Best!!!

  • @swingdrums13 Heartening to see a 13 year old appreciates jazz. Props mate

  • The thing I really like about Gene Krupa is that he always looks like he is having a good time! He has really amazing drum fills too! I like Buddy's drumming too! He drums at the speed of lightning when he does fills. But then he gets back into the main beat with no issue. No drummer today can beat these two guys. Well so far!

  • why do you persist on posting crap about your fav on here??

  • I met Gene Krupa several times when I was a young man. He inspired me with his drumming and also the fact that he was a true gentleman. I have played drums all my life. I am still performing in a big band. I am 67 years old. If you are interested, you can check out my "Bob Pettinicchi Tribute to Gene Krupa Drum Solo" on Youtube. It is listed on the Gene Krupa Drum Solo Page. Thanks ...and may the legend of the great Gene Krupa live on forever !!

  • I like the fact he uses a small kit. Rock drummers should take note.

  • Small kit, all flavor.

  • Yeah, and not only that, he invented have the stuff on the kit to boot - - he didn't just go out and buy it with his Mommy's credit card... and he invented the way it was played...

As for this Travis and people comparing drummers - - I think we're comparing two different styles... It would like saying James Brown sucked because he didn't have enough Polkas in his repertoire... Rock is about the look, attitude and volume... Jazz is about swing... bigger is better vs. less is more...!

  • Travis is by far the most overrated drummer in the world. Al he can do is hit the drums hard, which looks spectacular, but isn't very impressive from a drummers point of view. He lacks technique & groove.

Barker isn't per sé bad, he is just 'average'. Know your drumming knowlegde beofre you post jokes as 'Barker can smoke this dude'.

And if you think Barker is the legend, post your comments on Barker videos, not here.

  • @Shitfuckerino travis is good i think, he is overrated though

  • @Shitfuckerino travis barker does NOT lack in technique & groove. take a look at his earlier times at high school, hes got a education in jazz and march drumming. i think his technique is pretty good.

ok, in blink182 he doesnt play that much of a groovy stuff, but that hasnt sth to do with his abilities to do so. everybody says you cannot compare drummers or say which one is the best, then stop argueing how bad or good he is.

im not that much of a travis barker fan, but i acknowledge his skills

  • @youfucktubenickname

I have to say that I totally disagree. 'Cause if he has technique and groove, why doesn't he put those essential drumming skills into his drumming? Everybody can keep time and do a fill, which is al he does. Musically he doesn't impress me in comparison tot other drummers.

Note: I'm not saying he's bad, he's not bad at all. There are a lot of other drummers out there being a lot worse than Barker. He is just 'average' so to say.

  • @Shitfuckerino amen. Although I'd say it's a close tie as to who's more overrated, Travis Barker or Joey Jordinson

  • @Shitfuckerino george kolias would kill travis barker any day

  • get a life you tin eared moron

  • I don't think anyone should hate on any drummer personally. Travis learned jazz from these guys too and he just developed his own style thats all. He's good in his own way and for the music he plays. Drummers know that being humble about your craft will get you further than bragging or hating on others. We all have the same love at heart as drummers, just differant styles and personalities.

  • @TRAVISBLINK4EVER dude, one notices you have no idea about drumming.... travis barker has all of his shit from this man... what most of u guys dont understand, is that all of modern music comes from jazz, specifically hard bop...

  • travis is good, but hes nothing compared to thes guys... u cant fight over taste =D

  • Travis hasn't shown me anything that has really impressed me. Most of his stuff can be duplicated by good high school drummers. Usually he hits the drums and cymbals way harder than he needs to and it tends to distract the people watching the video.

  • Nice performance...............

  • Gene is responsible for bringing drums to the forefront. Before Gene, drummers were used as a metronome for the band and were hardly noticed . He was a true showman. Even Buddy looked up to Gene as an inspiration. You kids out there stop comparing everyone to Travis Barker. He's a decent drummer but stop the madness! Just enjoy these videos and stop trying to compare drummers.

  • 100% Agree. Nobody with more Charm than this man

  • gene was so quick with the sticks i had to watch it 3 times before i even saw him switch from traditional grip to matched

  • Is it me or does he actually switch from match grip to traditional switching from the jungle beat to the cymbal snare swing beat? I have personally never seen a drummer do that, cool to see a drummer who likes both.

  • I had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Krupa being introduced to him by my father who knew him. He was a true gentleman and when i got to see him get behind a drum set he could really swing a band. Totally humble guy and I saw Buddy at Yonkers High School turn his band over to him and give a loving tribute to the man he said inspired him. A magical man. Legends who should always be studied.

  • you know, im a drummer in a thrash metal band and im metal thru and thru, but gene krupa is one of my greatest influences. the way he was able to do so much and still be able to keep time is just miraculous. he truely was the father of not just jazz drummin, but drumming...PERIOD.

  • Krupa had style and great rhythm, he was credited for the rim shot technique when playing. Krupa learned from a rudiment drummer by the name of Moeller, who came up with the Moeller drumming technique, a rudiment triplet. Krupa studied with Moeller who they claim was one of the best rudiment drummers back in the 20's. If you master this technique it improves your speed, power and control. Krupa had it down, AWESOME VIDEO!!

  • "All REAL drummers respect Krupa's contribution! Ask around!"

Very true. If you've seen me post, you'll know I'm a stickler for technical abilities. To me, Buddy was the greatest.

HOWEVER, Buddy knew what the rest of us should know: Gene Krupa is the father of modern drumming. GK conceived the drum (trap) set, and made it an integral part of the band.

And though GK would bow to BR's technical abilities, BR might never have sat on a drum throne if weren't for GK to begin with.

    ..!..

  • Makes me laugh when drummers all get together and have a go at each other on here, saying whos better than who etc. Sad, you all have your own opinions, so keep them to yourselves.

You cant say things like, _ _ _ is the 2nd best drummer of all time - bollocks, to YOU maybe, just watch the video and comment on that.

  • 1. Speed doesn't matter in judging drum talent, its all about groove.

    2. Travis is not faster than Krupa.

    3. Travis is a mediocre drummer. Not special. Average skill.

    4. Krupa is the second best drummer of all time.

  • puta que o pario... eu odeio esse estilO de som, ms qualquer baterista tem q adimitir esse baterista e muito criativo. toco muito mesmo e merece reconhecimento parebens pelo som bem feito

  • Without Gene Krupa there would be no Travis Barker or anyone else for that matter! Even the Great Buddy Rich paid homage to Krupa! All REAL drummers respect Krupa's contribution! Ask around!

  • YOU GOTTA be kiddin me.....comparing barker to Krupa.....let me save you the trouble....ask Travis and i know he will tell you....check Krupa out....he helped create the ideas Barker uses now....NO COMPARISON...Krupa is a legend and had a career that spanned 40 years....Travis maybe a little over a decade with one band and an ill fatec reality show....in twenty years people will still know Krupa and Barker will be a footnote at best. Educate youself if you dare . Its all out there ....enjoy !!!

  • Thomas Pridgen is like my idol lol other that gene krupa

  • i love this guy

  • yo send me a video of him playing something fucking good from him because i have to this date never seen or heard anything extremly impressive by him. i hear so much good shit about him from so many people so send me something that makes him better than everyone else

  • Very nice!stop comparing and enyoj!

    thank you very much!

    pusa

  • maestro que ritmo

  • maybe these idios don't undestand that KRUPA , RICH , ROACH, COBHAM are the history of music and drums.

    BARKER ?? who's he ?

    anyway......

it's really stupid compare any drummer to these heroes !!

  • Damn Fuckhead Travis is shit .

    If You Zutty&Gene&Jo ?!!

Then You Know what (jazz) Drumming is .

    Im Sorry ....

  • Comment removed

  • Those fucking dancers are what I see whenever I hear this song..........not

  • Comment removed

  • fairly trite at this point, but what a fucking showman

  • lol Barker a god? thats a laugh.

  • Gene, John, Keith. Great Names. Buddy. Also amazing. I'd also throw in Louie Belson and Ed Shaughnessy from the Jazz era, and Neil Peart and Mitch Mitchel from the rock era.

  • good list

  • .....and Clem Burke from the rock era as well. Easily in the top ten rock and roll drummers of all time.

  • That's awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • dont forget Buddy Rich. He was just fantastic

  • Krupa had a presence's about his self.A definite showman.

  • Gene Krupa, Keith Moon, and John Bonham were the greatest ever!!!

    shame they're all departed...

  • Drums= Gene Krupa = Legend !

  • didnt gene and krupa do a drum battle on this song

  • gene and krupa?...

  • what are you talking about?

the drummer's name is Gene and his last name is Krupa, he is Gene Krupa, an awesome jazz drummer...

  • I think you're reffering to Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich :p

  • ur funny dude lol

  • See folks.........what a treat instead of listening to the multitude of double bass no talent assholes on youtube.

    Gene.............we miss you!

  • Gene krupa the greatest Swing drummer.

  • Krupa makes travis look like a 3rd grader auditioning for the role of the little drummer boy in a school play

  • just cuz travis barker doesn't play jazz professionally, doesn't mean he can't. i mean, no way is he better than Gene Krupa, but Barker's still got plenty of merit.

  • Troll spotted.

  • this is from 1966

  • And at least 5 years from 1966 would take us to 1971.

  • I laugh my ass off when idiots compare Travis Barker to the late Great Gene Krupa.

  • bogota99: ... and Buddy Rich, and Ed Shaughnessy... it's sad :(

  • Belated Happy Birthday, Uncle Gene!! I know you and Benny are swingin up a storm in heaven.

  • Trollfag detected.

  • amazing.

  • Gene will always be my Drum hero, such an innovator and a legend. GO GENE !

  • He's trying to wind you up ... the best thing people can do to mindless WUMs on here is ignore them.

  • Gene may have been past his prime here ,due to ill health, but he just creates so much excitement and energy ,as always.

  • Oh God.. why, WHYYY every time someone mentions Travis Barker among these priceless videos???? WHYYY??? Who the fuck is going to remember Tra...WTF Baker, Barker, Berker, whatever, 30 years from now??? By the way, the video is nothing short of amazing.

  • this guy may not be technical as say buddy rich but for sense of timing and rhythm krupa is second to none

  • Gene Krupa is the man

  • That part where Mr. Krupa decides to switch to the Ride...oh my!You guys feel that too?

This is the case of :If only we could play even,or what?lol

    None better,Mr.Gene Krupa!Thanks for all!

    Ill "roll" to that!

  • Go, Gene, Go! The Grandmaster behind the drums. Thanks for the post.

  • Krupa was the father of trap set drumming! And people forget how well he played time. Swings his ASS off here!

  • Just incredible!!!! Thanks for posting!!!

  • すげえw

  • Yeah. He was the beginning of modern drumming. he really kicks ass here. I love jazz drummers but Krupa played with a rock and roll feel before there was such a thing.

  • You know "cogitating" what you said about Krupa playing with a rock and roll feel before there was rock and roll...YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!! Great observation!! from a (hack) drummer in seattle

  • without gene krupa there would be no buddy rich.

  • without Gene Krupa there wouldn't even be an "Animal" from the Muppet show. I bet this character was based on Gene Krupa !!

  • actually, most people think animal is based on keith moon. but the muppet creator guy says he's not based on anyone

but we all know it was keith moon.

  • ... and as far as i know, Keith Moon was a big Krupa-fan and wanted to play like him. So Animal is Moon is Krupa. ;-)

  • I think it may have been documented that it was indeed Keith Moon. I am fairly certain I read it somewhere. Anyway, it is safe to say that Keith Moon got a lot of his style and flair from Krupa, so we can say that Krupa was more or less the inspiriation behind Animal.

  • I would love to see "Sing Sing Sing" done with the Electric Mayhem. They have never done that song.

  • Love that Sing Sing Sing 80e15

  • we're playing 'sing, sing, sing' and i'm on drums...the conductor told me to look up videos of gene krupa...and OH MY GOSH! i can't believe i hadn't heard of him before now! he's AMAZING!

  • always good to see gene krupa at work but the rest of the band really really really sucked

  • moron, just because you possess tin ears dont go inflicting your warped sense of what constitutes a good band.

Carmen "the eagle" Leggio was a fine tenor sax player who made many great live airshots with Gene's quartet....this from The Dean Martin show.

  • One mustn't criticize other people on grounds where he can't stand perpendicular himself.

  • yes one friggin' can. what about litterature critics? they don't write books for the hate of God.

  • Forget John Bonham....Gene Krupa's "the Man"!

  • gene's droppin bombs

  • oh yeah.. I had to watch twice to notice how he switches stick grip.. I'll need to practise that. Love how it all seems to be so natural. Top man, great influence.

  • So cool! It makes me want to tap!! My marching band using this, In the Mood, & Zoot Suite Riot for fall 2008. If you wanna check it out, you can look at my vids of me playing it.

  • i love the sound Gene Krupa makes with his drums. its pretty amazing.

  • what make me laugh is the complete wankers who try to put down these icons down...who the hell are they kidding.who gives them the right to make negative opinions on these guy's? hampton webb krupa rich to name a few are artists who we can only in our wildest dreams hope to be able to play like..it will never happen.so just cos you got a drumkit in ya basement or bedroom in ya moms house..it don't make you a drum god like these guys.so keep ya stupid comments for the under 3's who u think care

  • I agree, drummers like Bonham, Moon & Ginger Baker took what Gene did and just added their own styles to it, they all owe something to Gene. And probably tried copying him at one time or another.

  • Gene Krupa, Bill Haley, Glenn Miller & ELVIS = TRUE!!!

  • I can't believe somebody actually..had the pure ignorance and stupidity to diss -- somebody of this much importance to the influence of todays music, and drumming in general -_-..like how, dumb can you get? LOL This guy pratically invented the drum solo--

  • I haven't had much of a chance to study Krupa's technique before-watch how he changes grips on the left hand stick.

A question-note that Krupa always had a very small cymbal right in front of him, and Buddy had the same thing in some of his later appearances-is that a homage to Krupa?

  • It has been said, and also echoed by Louie Bellson, that Buddy loved Gene so much that you used the same set-up as Gene. So, you are right. Buddy Rich did use the same drum kit and cymbal set-up as Gene Krupa.

  • i really dont know how u can say that i said somthing bad when im just speaking my mind and tat is that Buddy is better ina sence then Gene

  • krupa makes most other drummers sound like beaters for a sideshow stripper (sorry max)

  • Ok guys cool down. This was Krupa when he was already sick from leukemia, back problems and a bad heart! Let's just honor his memory and leave our difference out of it.

  • The nasty comments posted to this "ripped off clip" are entierly unwnanted, this was GENE live in 1966, and tho he makes a mess of the coda, COULD YOU BETTER?

  • The worst part about this, is you called Gene Krupa an noob. Wow you are one sad motherfucker.

  • I'll never know how the fuck can you brakatt say what you say...to dare to say such things about such great drummers...I don't know what to say more

  • Just a quick comment on brakatt. If you're a drummer then you should be ashamed. I'm sure you're not if you go around making inane comments like that. Drumming is a fraternity/sorority. Things get passed down from Krupa, Rich, Baker, Mitchell, Bonham, Smith, Glennie, Barker, to all the kids out there learning their chops. Most drummers I know support each other and share ideas. It's about expression and emotion and if you don't get that then hang up your sticks.

  • How True!!! That is the way I was taught to think of our art. I never saw negative comments on drummers until I joined YouTube and it sickens me.

  • I fully agree. Drummers somehow have a mutual appreciation for each other's inventiveness and we are truly a breed of our own. I'm amazed that people who can't play a smidgeon as well as anyone from that era think they can talk that way.

  • Hey gene Krupa was awesome!!

  • your six year old cousin could not find his ass with a map.

  • you my friend would not know music if it ran your stupid ass over. If you don't like this type of music DON'T LISTEN.

  • Hey asshole learn your fuckin music these fossils help pioneer most drumemrs today with out jazz you'ld pretty much have no other music....besides like punk... Fuckin A I highly doubt your six year old cousin can play better than a drumming LEGEND and even understands the fundamentals of jazz music. If you hate this type of music and think its garbage throw out all your cds. Cause Guys like this created and molded many drummers that are amazing today.

  • i suppose u think the clash are musical, and that nu metal rools (drools!!!), and that you really could play if u only could find the time to dedicate yrfkn(damned asshole)self to practicing...

fuck you & the gay pony you rode in on, asswipe.

    out.

  • How come I didn't hear about your six year old cousin then? Retard...

  • brakatt, gene krupa requested the hihat be raised too hip level. it used to be on the floor in the 1930's. and he was the one behind tunable rack toms, you can thank him for that, you friggin numnut.

  • Gene Krupa basically introduced the modern drumset to the first recordings of this type of music. No one had recorded with one before he did it. So, when you see someone playing a drum trap set, you can pretty much thank Mr. Krupa.

  • buddy and krupa naturaly equal

  • come on guys chihawk is right but i think krupa was a bit more influential

  • The dancers in the background really remind me of House of Fraser for some reason..

  • i liked the one at holywoood hotell better

  • shame, only 30 years earlier he was making immortal jazz history...musicians really are a product of their time.

  • Gene was a showman!

  • Oh my god, he swings so hard is insane

  • the tenor needs a better sax

  • That floor tom sings like no other.

  • gene was the only one that sounded good.

  • the tenor was awful

  • great show, exelent timeing

  • There are plenty of Chick Webb recordings available. Chick was a hunchback. His was also the greatest drummer ever. Gene always credited Chick as being his influence.
