@DAVID29ification Well its usually the females that build the nests and sit on the eggs. Though they will swap dutys. But from your brief description id say that boy is a girl about to lay some eggs. ^^ However i dont suggest allowing your birds to bring the eggs to full term and hatch as its very difficult to find homes for the baby's. And there are far too many out there who need homes its a bad idea to bring more into the world. ^^;
@amylee900 Thats great to hear! Congrats on being a step-egg mommy. lol
Also a tip to help birds pass eggs (large ones or just overall) is to use mineral oil on the outside of their cloaca, or another slippery oil - like Vitamin E oil (very good also for moisturizing skin and healing) and i know there's afew others but its good to check with your vet on the oils as well. I suggest Vitamin E myself because its something ive personally used for helping my lovie. Its also good for after too!
today i was petting my bird and i touched her lower stomach and found it very soft. I then found out that she was pregnant. I live in california and its raining very hard and a bird forum said when a lovebird is pregnant it needs 12 hours of sunlight, but right now we cannot supply that. Also, it said we need to keep her warm so i put a blanket over her cage. People said to get a square tissue box and put scraps of paper so she can lay her egg but shes not sitting in it. Please help!
That is alright. Its normal we can provide boxes, nests and whatever else. But unless our darling little birds decide thats what they want to use, they will use what they want or nothing at all. Im curious as to how you found out she is pregnant because generally the stomach will swell abit (like how a humans does) then as they get closer to laying theres a lump which is the egg. I stress not to press too hard on the adomen to feel around for it as the eggs are brittle.
Its always good to talkto your vet as well and have your bird checked for her first few pregnancies with you so you can not only learn what to 'feel' for, but also what to look for when shes pregnant and overall make sure its not something else and she's healthy enough to lay the egg. Also some vets can give you added calcium to add to her diet to help in the formation of the egg and prevent egg binding. Though this may cost a small amount or (large if your unemployed x3).
As for sunlight - its upto you really. Its not a 'must have' for the birds. So dont panic! lol. And its always a good idea to make sure your birds dont get a chill, pregnant or not. Ive found electric blankets can be a handy winter time tool to keep the birds warm but also using heating pads to give them a warm spot to cuddle upto is good as well. Myself i have used blankets heated in the dryer and small heaters to heat a small 'bird room' for my flock on particularly cold days.
I hope that all helps you amylee900, if you have any more questions or concerns dont hesitate to drop me a PM! Im always happy to help a fellow person with bird troubles or bird with people troubles. lol
Oh yes any female bird can lay eggs without a male. Well watch her carefully, i do suggest if its been two days to take her immediately to the vet as she could be egg bound - which is fatal. e_e Or it could be another problem. And dont be afraid of her biting or use a thick glove to hold her then very very carefully check her abdomen. Also broccoli is a good food too. Also watch her droppings - when, the size, consistency, etc. They can be great tellers of a bird's health.
OK so that would explain that the second I've put the newly purchased fynch, that my male fynch jump on the new one 3x. What I find weird is that they seem to poke at each other. And normally, I don't mind, where I get more concern is near the eyes. Is that normal behaviour for fynches???
@Cendrinne Well it all depends if your other finch is a female or male. Its always a good idea to do research on your birds. ^_^ A handy book to have around is called the "(species of bird - in this case Finch) Handbook" i forget who its by but many large chain pet stores have them and many bookstores as well will have them. ^_^ They have them on many many types of birds and its all very useful information about birds.
Thanks Rose, sweet of you to say. Well thank god I had another bird (fynch) but since he was use to hearing my LoveBird all day (they would respond to each other) I thought I would get him another fynch since having another lovebird would be too painful. So now my fynch has company and he seems happy now.
@Cendrinne yes they're wonderful little birds. ^^ If they're zebra finches - lookout breeding is their favorite and almost only past time. x3 lol Ive got 6 baby's looking for homes with maby 5 more on the way to prove it. lmao
Hello, just to let you know, I maybe waited too long, but when I brought her to the avian vet, they told me she had a 25% of surviving the surgery, but it didn't go too well for her. She had to be put down. So, now I know, more then two days in the belly should be a warning sign. I miss her terribly and wish I've found out the signs way before. Thanks to have responded.
@dayzv83 It takes two days to develop, but its good to always have your bird checked at the vet's office for their health and safety when they begin to show signs of pregnancy. The doctor can also show you what to feel for - the egg. But its just a lump around the pelvis be very gentle so you dont break the egg inside her - or it can cause her problems.
OMG, Kiwi looks exactly like my lovebird. I'm just concern, she seems to be pregnant for a long long long time. I would say over one Month, she has a big belly and always seems to nest in one corner of the cage. She seems happy to see me, and let's me pet her and loves it when I pet her back, but is that normal that she didn't lay an egg yet?
@daysienaim well do they come out to eat normally, and drink water? how are their poops? if they change color, slow or cease eating and drinking water, and become lethargic it could be a sign they are sick and you should take them in for a checkup. but its always a good idea to check if there's eggs in the box too.
My bird has laid 18 eggs so far and none has hatched!): Well its because the male flew away and she's very very agressive! So we can't possibly get her another male coz she would bite and attack it like wat she did 2 my previous bird. Wat i'm amazed about ur bird is tt it actually allowed u to put ur hand in2 its cage. Mine doesn't even want me 2 open its cage door. Lol...FYI ur bird was openinhg its wings and tts a sign tts its trying to push the egg out. Mine does the same and makes noises.
Kiwi's favorite color is black, so i wear black gloves when messing around in her cage - otherwise i would lose my hand lol. And the opening of the wings is a mating ritual, females do that to the males when they're ready to 'make eggs' x3 to be blunt.
Im sorry for not commenting i mustve been having problems posting or i missed your comment.
hi my love birds go in and out of their nest box and making weird sounds how do i know if their mating or playing cuz if they are mating shud i get prepared
@thepowerlaugh well usually the daddy will hop on top of the mommy and do the birdy nasty, but im not sure. I couldnttell you from that desc. ^^; Sorry, but its always a good idea to make sure your birds are healthy before they have eggs and if possible get mommy a birdy birth control shot - so we dont encourage the breeding and so we dont haveto spend years trying to find good homes for our birds where they wont be neglected or worse.
well i suggest talking to your avian vet about it. I am not a trained professional and your avian vet shouldnt mind telling you or giving you the proper info and if you ask maby even some treats for your fuzz. ^^!

thank you so much! this really helped. we never thought that she would have an egg.
the male bird flew away so when she lays her egg it will be empty because it wasnt
fertilized. but she is doing well right now. we've provided her with spinach and other foods
with calcium . if the bump never becomes hard what does that mean? we havent had a chance
to see if its become harder since she wont let us touch her at the moment. thanks again! (:
