The NHS is brilliant. This clown can sit here saying all this because his pay packet is too big and he probably enjoys private health care. If we lose the NHS then that is where i will probably be looking at moving abroad because it will finally confirm we are being run by a bunch of FUCKING DICKHEADS!!!!!!!!!!! (sorry for swearing). The problem isn't with NHS, it's with funding. Socialized medicine is simply unsustainable. Private insurance will give you more quality health care because they have more of an incentive to improve. Private medical insurance isn't expensive if the insurance companies are allowed to compete. Just like car insurance here in the states... insurance companies are allowed to compete freely and it's really driven the cost of car insurance down to an affordable level.

I would disagree with it being unsustainable as it is now 60 years old. The funding is there, though it is used incorrectly and abused by immigrants and foreigners who have not paid their national insurance but will get free health here no questions asked. In the other case if we went private, an elderly person with little money will have paid their national insurance all their lives but now cannot afford to pay private with their national pension scheme and will suffer for it. too many cooks

The elderly wouldn't be hurt at all if it's phased out properly. This is the problem with socialized anything. Once you get started, it's hard to get off. Our social security is 60 years old too, but as you said, it's been abused and misused. Now it's almost bankrupt. It's like going to sea in a ship that's leaking. You have to turn back or face sinking.

When we prosper economically, everyone benefits, but they refuse to stop spending long enough to grow. Hannan is a great politician in my humble opinion. We need more like him. Our health care system is not crap. The problem is, there are people who can afford health care, but choose not to. I have no problem giving health care to those who are physically or mentally unable to support themselves. But we have a welfare state here. The more you give these people, the more they want. I have excellent health insurance. I'd put it up against any plan. I had stents put in my arteries the day my cardiologist found the problem and was back home the next day.

Hannan said "you can't spend your way out of a recession," but thats exactly what Bush did during the last recession by giving tax breaks and returns, and it seemed to work that time. Why has the conservative belief system so drastically changed in a matter of just a couple of years? The economic theories haven't changed, so what has?

First, learn the difference between a tax break and spending. Tax breaks mean that we keep money in our pockets or allow businesses to grow and profit. When businesses grow and profit, they create jobs and hire. Bush spent, no doubt. Unemployment was only 4.4% under Bush and a republican house & senate. Unemployment under a democratic house & senate skyrocketed. Obama himself says it will surpass 10% by 2010. 10% is a conservative figure. Obama has outspent any other president in just 60 days.

Obama and the democratic congress, as of yet, are not the cause of rising unemployment rates, but they are correlated because they are happening at the same time. Additionally, you are supporting my argument by stating how low the unemployment rate under Bush was, however, during the recession of 2001-2003 the unemployment rate did get as high as 6.3% (Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Lastly, you should learn how math works in a budget. Taking in less is the same as spending more as far as the deficit is concerned: both will increase it. I know Bush's deficits pale in comparison to what Obama is proposing, but I'm simply trying to bring to light the FACTS

I thought the idea behind tax breaks and such was that if people have fewer taxes to pay, then jobs will be allowed to grow, people will have more pocket money, and people will spend more with it. Therefore, the government ends up profiting anyway. So I don't think taking all our money away and pouring it into worthless enterprises is at all similar to allowing us to have more money.

True! However, Obama's stimulus package did include tax rebates, not including them would have decreased the budget deficit, so which would you have preferred?

Lowering taxes increase the money government takes in because of the economic boom that is also the result lower taxes. So lowering taxes is good for the deficit. Tax rebates are just there to create illusion you are paying less taxes. Since they did not change the tax rate you will just pay it back next year. Not to mention the increase in the corporate tax you will have to pay through what you buy and by getting laid off or a paycut.

Correct. Between '01 and '03 unemployment spiked. What significant event occurred in 2001? (9/11/01) Under Bush and his republican administration, unemployment decreased to 4.4%. Under even your definition of correlative relationships, unemployment should have at least started to decrease in 2 years. The past recession was largely due to 9/11, which was an external factor to our economy, what we are facing now is due to several internal factors, so recovery will be much more difficult and protracted. And lets get real about when our current problems started occurring, the Dow peaked in Oct. 2007 and unemployment didn't pass 5% until Mar. '08, so its been a year and a half at most.
