In the baptist church I grew up in, when you accept christ you also get baptized in front of the church. This is called a public profession of faith. I see the blasphemy challenge as the same kind of declaration.

Okay, next to this being your own personal interpretation of that verse (you know, I read it differently, and who's to say that you're more right than me in reading), there's one big flaw: The lack of belief in god.
You say it takes courage to kneel down and ask god for forgiveness. To me, it's sort of like kneeling down and asking Santa to come bring presents. I tend to sit down and say "Well, there ISN'T anyone to ask for forgiveness, I need to work on myself to become a better person."
The problem with this guys view is that it is HIS interpretation of what the bible says. Here again is the problem with Christianity. One Christian will say one thing and another will say something different. Of course, they both say the other is wrong and that if you believe the other guy, you're being misled and aren't a "true" Christian. It's a big circle in this respect with Christians and why people should really question their own beliefs.
An excellent video articulating Christian theology! I would simply add that it should be remembered that Christian understanding of God is one of a God who is absolute love and truth. To deny the Holy Spirit is to deny truth itself and I strongly suspect that this is not the motivation behind the many people who have lent support to the challenge. I'm not willing to ask forgiveness from a non-existent immaterial being, be it your god, or any of the thousands of other gods that humans have dedicated their lives to as fully as you are dedicating your life to Yahweh. But as fas as Matthew 12, the context makes it clear what Jesus was refering to when he said that blasphemy of the holy spirit would not be forgiven "in this life or in the next life".

"Blaspheming the Holy Spirit" was a reference to what the Pharisees had just done - They had witnessed a miracle of love and had attributed it to the devil.
So I think what Jesus was saying is that if your mind is so contorted that you condemn works of love, then your soul is truly in jeopardy.

His whole argument was based around the idea that we believe in the holy spirit in the first place. That we're telling God that we are sinning too much for him. That's not what we mean. Just like the phrase can be misunderstood, so can what we say. We aren't saying our sins are too big for him, we're say he doesn't exist.

Mr. Hart's video seems to be dripping with his inability to recognize what an atheist is, an atheist absolutely does not believe in his god and therefore the challenge is not to actually commit a mortal sin, since without god none exist. The purpose of the challenge is simply to voice an opinion to the world, not to offend his god so it does not matter whether or not he thinks they can be forgiven for their challenge by his god, thats just not the point.

Who gives you this context? I think your context is just what YOU want to believe. Context and interpretations always lead people to make the decision thart they are happiest with. Why are god's desires sometimes not acceptable or too hard to follow? Because they are our desires. You create your own context to interpret the scriptures in a way that you are happy to live with.

Why does religion always seem to dictate a belief in God? Does religion need to exist for God to exist? I am finding that a lot of these people deny the Holy Spirit (though it is quite useless to do) because they had some bad experience from a certain church or denomination. The bible does not teach eternal hell but a final judgment at the end of the world where our faith and belief in God will be in question. The bible is full of suggestions for a happy and fulfilling life.

There are numerous Christian sects. The only problem I have with the videos on youtube is the level of cockiness involved with apparently atheistic videos (they range from saying God doesn't exist to criticizing churches on earth)...but what can I do? right? I don't mean you don't know how to read left to right, up to down, cover to cover, I mean, when you read one passage, there will/might be other passages that can be put together that can determine what it's really trying to teach. Remember, the Bible is made up of books from different writers, not one book. So reading cover to cover is most likely useless.

For me to reject "god's" forgiveness or mercy is ridiculous because that would make me accept there were a god to have these "available gifts."

Okay, next to this being your own personal interpretation of that verse (you know, I read it differently, and who's to say that you're more right than me in reading), there's one big flaw: The lack of belief in god.
You say it takes courage to kneel down and ask god for forgiveness. To me, it's sort of like kneeling down and asking Santa to come bring presents. I tend to sit down and say "Well, there ISN'T anyone to ask for forgiveness, I need to work on myself to become a better person."

The problem with this guys view is that it is HIS interpretation of what the bible says. Here again is the problem with Christianity. One Christian will say one thing and another will say something different. Of course, they both say the other is wrong and that if you believe the other guy, you're being misled and aren't a "true" Christian. It's a big circle in this respect with Christians and why people should really question their own beliefs.

An excellent video articulating Christian theology! I would simply add that it should be remembered that Christian understanding of God is one of a God who is absolute love and truth. To deny the Holy Spirit is to deny truth itself and I strongly suspect that this is not the motivation behind the many people who have lent support to the challenge. This would mean that their honesty draws them closer to the Holy Spirit than even they can imagine!

I just wanted to say that I totally agree with you. I've been reading through the comments on this post, and it makes me really sad that people have so dramatically misinterpreted what you said.
Watching your video, it seemed to me that the main message that you wanted to get across is that we believe in a God who love us so much that He can forgive anything and heal all hurts... not that you were trying to convert people. I wish people didn't feel that they have to get so defensive.

That's right - they are not just saying what they believe. None of them are content to stop there. They all feel the need to MOCK as well. If they were so freedom loving they'd leave others the freedom to believe as THEY wish, without being mocked by atheists and unbelievers for it.
But worst of all is defiling and desecrating other people's religious items and items of worship. There is absolutely NO call for that. It is indefensible.

That takes nothing! Admitting that you are a sinner is not hard, the question is if its healthy. The reason I ask if its healthy to constantly vail in your missery about how sinfull and bad you are is because I do not agree that acting according to ones best efforts to be a good person can be considered sinfull. But He does love us, make no mistake.
I think that people don't take in consideration the evidence of the Bible. They are too afraid to have somebody bigger than them and they are unwilling to research. Do they honestly believe that the Bible would have survived for over 2000 years if it was a myth? People were VERY skeptical back then, how on earth would it survive to this day? (Because its true...)

The reason why there is hell is because Satan didn't want to be with Godand God loved him SO MUCH that he gave Satan a place that God wouldn't be. So the people who don't want to be with God can go there too, he doesn't send people to Hell. He wants them to be with him in Heaven,but if you don't want to be with him then he gives you free will to choose not too and you can go to Hell.. and in Hell thats when you know all of Gods greatness but you can never attain it.Thats why hell is so miserable

His whole argument was based around the idea that we believe in the holy spirit in the first place. That we're telling God that we are sinning too much for him. That's not what we mean. Just like the phrase can be misunderstood, so can what we say. We aren't saying our sins are too big for him, we're say he doesn't exist.

Mr. Hart's video seems to be dripping with his inability to recognize what an atheist is, an atheist absolutely does not believe in his god and therefore the challenge is not to actually commit a mortal sin, since without god none exist. The purpose of the challenge is simply to voice an opinion to the world, not to offend his god so it does not matter whether or not he thinks they can be forgiven for their challenge by his god, thats just not the point.

Who gives you this context? I think your context is just what YOU want to believe. Context and interpretations always lead people to make the decision thart they are happiest with. Why are god's desires sometimes not acceptable or too hard to follow? Because they are our desires. You create your own context to interpret the scriptures in a way that you are happy to live with.

Why does religion always seem to dictate a belief in God? Does religion need to exist for God to exist? I am finding that a lot of these people deny the Holy Spirit (though it is quite useless to do) because they had some bad experience from a certain church or denomination. The bible does not teach eternal hell but a final judgment at the end of the world where our faith and belief in God will be in question. The bible is full of suggestions for a happy and fulfilling life.

There are numerous Christian sects. The only problem I have with the videos on youtube is the level of cockiness involved with apparently atheistic videos (they range from saying God doesn't exist to criticizing churches on earth)...but what can I do? right? Also, lifeteeninc is a Catholic organization. For example, they accept evolution.

He's absolutely theologically correct, theologically. In fact, his interpretation is identical to the way the Catholic Church interprets the "Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit." I'm not sure if Mark Hart is Catholic, but he is very correct. Powerful video! I like it. God Bless you!

You make the (possibly) valid point that many people read out of the scripture what they want. My question to you is this - is this not precisely what you have spent this entire video doing? And please note that atheists aren't saying god can't forgive them - they are saying that they don't believe there is a god to save them. You can't preassume the existence of god and then attempt to understand atheism.

Exactly what I said. You don't know how to read the Bible. I don't mean you don't know how to read left to right, up to down, cover to cover, I mean, when you read one passage, there will/might be other passages that can be put together that can determine what it's really trying to teach. Remember, the Bible is made up of books from different writers, not one book. So reading cover to cover is most likely useless.
