  • cant believe they gave this nigga an oscar

  • Bancrofts glee and Poitiers breathless speech says it all. Hollywood gold.

Bancroft was a beautiful and beautifully understated actress, with that less is more intelligence, and she was (endearingly) awful and painfully shy it seemed at giving interviews- as if she couldnt stand the fawning or understand what all the fuss was about. Maybe someone has a clip of her being interviewed by Terry Wogan who ended up pretty much asking and answering the questions himself. TV gold.

  • @masterlee123 Seriously! It's 2010. That word is stupid and so are you.

  • @masterlee123

    be cool bro...be cool

  • Terrific!

  • Wonderful moment. I wish they didn't cut out what Jack Lemmon said after they walked off stage, its really sweet and genuine.

  • @yellohcards What did Jack Lemmon say after Poitier's win?

  • He never lost his Bahamian accent.

  • 1 person just had to be a dick

  • I just love Sidney Poirtier's walk it's so cool.

  • black

  • Those were the days.......alas,reminded me of him presenting the Golden globe to Morgan Freeman tday

  • @harsh36511 why because there both black u racist fuck

  • hes black

  • OMG....... i LOVE him!!! HEs one of the best actors that i ever seen. i love his charme.....hes so beautiful <3 <3 <3 <3 and i'm just only 18 years old in the year 2012. i LOVE all his movies :((

today they are not so good actors :(

i wish i would live in these days xDDD

  • This man oozes class. One of the finest talents and gentleman alive, and a well deserved Oscar. God bless this incredible man who's name I LOVE to say. : )

  • Sidney was a beautiful, graceful, and talented man. This video made me tear up. I loved Anne Bancroft's reaction, especially at the end.

  • @SpiirytStarrchild hi :) you do know he's still alive, right? he'll turn 85 in February 20th :)

  • @dreamseeker17 No, she passed away a few years ago. She was married to Mel Brooks.

  • A great what if question......... Had the JFK assassination had not happened would Poitier have won? As a result of the events of 11/22/63 the December release of DR STRANGELOVE was pushed back for 3 months - disqualifying it for the 1963 awards. Up against Peter Sellers, Poitier might not have been successful.

  • Is it wrong that I've always thought a man much much older than myself is so hot? lol

  • mi nombre es yoelyn montenegro ... el señor POITIER tiene una sorrisa muy bonita.

  • Sidney Poitier personifies talent, intelligence and class. He has deserved more than one Oscar for best performance of the year in his life time, but this one was and will always be the sweetest. You are a credit not only to your race but to mankind Mr. Poitier. God Bless.

  • My god!!!! Anne was stunning!!! So beautiful

  • Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts of those times.

  • @majesticmaniac Julia Roberts will NEVER touch Anne Bancroft.

  • What a great and wonderful person he is! Millions love him and I am so thankful for his talent and for sharing that talent to all of us.

  • The Oscars is not how it use to be...sucks now.

  • Anne Bancroft was happier for him more than she probably was when she herself got it! Haha! Great lady!

  • No dislikes. How cool is that?

  • the greatest black actor off all time.

  • sidney's smile is beautiful

  • The Oscars always were a joke. Fucking Rin Tin Tin got one.

  • Listen to her VOICE! American standard, rest in peace

  • Yeas, Anne does seem a little pretentious in her giddiness. But Sydney WAS really terrific in Lilies (it's my wife's favorite film of his) and upon his shoulders sat the dreams realized of many acting pioneers who came before him.

  • Anne Bancroft was one of the great talents, and a most beautiful woman.

  • Wonderful moment in oscar history. Anne Banroft was estastic!

  • Check out Gary Mitchell Sidney Poitier Monologue... Thnx

  • Mrs. Robinson, I think you're trying to give me an Oscar.

  • Great moment in oscar history

  • @Jlady43 Indeed.

  • Anne Bancroft; missed her turn because this dedicated actress was on broadway, and working that night; she later did a fine film with Mr. Poiter,'The Slender Thread' a fine, and two Icons of Film and Broadway,Miss Anne Bancroft, its 6 years and people still talk about her.

  • Sidney wins in 1964

    Denzel wins in 2002

So, you're telling me that in 38 years, no other black actor in a leading role gave an oscar worthy performance?

My conclusion: the Academy, & Hollywood for that matter, are oh so very full of $%^&

  • @YoungGrizzly82 Woopie Goldberg in 1990 i think

  • @captainjjb84 She won in '91 for "Ghost", but that was for best supporting role, I was solely speaking of a leading role....

  • This reminded me alot of how happy Julia Roberts was presenting Denzel

Washington with his Best Actor Oscar. Even though Julia is certainly NOT

Anne Bancroft by any stretch of the imagination.

  • Anne Bancroft reminded me of Una Merkel after Rita Moreno won RIP Anne and Una both were proud to be a part of history

  • A historic moment

  • How could anyone dislike this???

And Ms. Bancroft, as beautiful as ever. As well, as a very handsome, Sidney! Just got his biography, can't WAIT to dive right into it!!!

  • sidney is amazing, damn i miss c.c. baxter and mrs. robinsin, RIP

  • @southernbrooklyngal

the man is still alive, you know

  • Sidney deserved this oscar and I miss Anne terribly

  • RIP Anne Bancroft You're such class

  • i almost didn't reconize anne in the video she looks so much like Rita Moreno

  • Anne Bancroft? looks more like Rita Moreno

  • I ADORE Anne Bancroft...she was brillant in Torch Song Trilogy and is the most wonderful person/thespian!

  • the first black man to win an a oscar

  • usualy the annoucer said "mr.poitier is the first negro ever to win such a prestigese award'' but i guess the academy thaught it was to inapropriate

  • @smotsliner i think that's just for news reels

  • I wish Richard Harris had won and Sidney should have won or at least nominated in 'A Raisin in the Sun'

  • the fact that he is black has nothing to do with it. a brilliant performance by a great actor...period !

  • Sidney Poitier richly deserved his Academy Award for "Lillies of the Field". Anne Bancroft was so gracious in presenting the Oscar to Mr. Poitier. Ms. Bancroft was one classy lady!

  • @rickram1961 i agree and how about Greer Garson accepting Sophia Loren's Oscar on her behalf?

  • Omi Anne Bancroft is beyond beautiful...

  • Pure class all the way.

  • So deserved! Thanks for the extended clip, it's the first time I’ve seen it like this. A Patch of Blue and A Raisin in the Sun were Oscar worthy too!

  • Classic!

  • great movie. great performance. great moment at the oscars. I miss going to the movies and seeing wonderful art like this.

  • How classy and talented was Anne Bancroft? She is sorely missed. As for the win, I like Poitier but I prefer Richard Harris on this one.

  • History feels so good to see and even wonderful to repeat. So deserved his Oscar. So deserved.

  • i really, really would like to have a moment like this in my life where i can say i was the first.

  • @JordyPordyPuddinNPie

    you sound needy and vain

  • Many people have forgotten but 1:15 caused quite a stir at the time. Anne said she received hate mail and death threats for years after. She said the worst letters were the people who did not mind the kiss so much as Anne instigated it. She then said something that I don't think this site would print. Great lady!

Many people believe the first TV interracial kiss was Star Trek or Petula Clark/Harry Belafonte. But it was this one.

  • @JerseySurvivor

Anne Bancroft was gorgeous, and her reception of Poitier seemed so natural and unaffected, she was clearly thrilled for him to win. Great lady indeed, and two very talented thespians.

  • @direfranchement You can even see her saying to Poitier as they walk off the stage, "I'm so happy that you won!" I love her reaction to a well-deserved win.

  • @JerseySurvivor Actually there was one before that. In a 1964 movie (Star Trek was 1968) called 'One Potato, Two Potato' with Barbara Barrie and Bernie Hamilton. If you haven't seen this you should...great movie.

  • I was overwhelmed with emotions after watching that... Real Oscar history here.

  • What a fine actor, it's just a shame there weren't even more oscar worthy roles for him in his future. And as an asides, Newman's role in Hud was one of his best...

  • @broadjumper1

A Patch Of Blue was worthy of another OScar worthy role, so was In The Heat Of The Night.

  • @broadjumper1 I have to disagree. A Patch of Blue, In the Heat of the Night were all fine. As were many previous roles, like Something of Value and especially, the Defiant Ones. I think he and Tony Curtis should have won for that!

  • Bancroft's reaction, Poitier's giddy walk to the stage, the enthusiastic audience reaction, and his genuine laughter at the end of his speech makes this historic moment one of the best in Oscar history.

  • @MisterFezMartin

One of the most emotional wins, but Anne Bancroft looked like she was drunk or something at the time.

  • god bless u mr poitier!!!!!!

  • This is way better than the 48 second one that has been on youtube for years. Thank you! thank you! thank you!

  • He so deserved that oscar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
