Bancrofts glee and Poitiers breathless speech says it all. Hollywood gold.
Bancroft was a beautiful and beautifully understated actress, with that less is more intelligence, and she was (endearingly) awful and painfully shy it seemed at giving interviews- as if she couldnt stand the fawning or understand what all the fuss was about. Maybe someone has a clip of her being interviewed by Terry Wogan who ended up pretty much asking and answering the questions himself. TV gold.
OMG....... i LOVE him!!! HEs one of the best actors that i ever seen. i love his charme.....hes so beautiful <3 <3 <3 <3 and i'm just only 18 years old in the year 2012. i LOVE all his movies :((
This man oozes class. One of the finest talents and gentleman alive, and a well deserved Oscar. God bless this incredible man who's name I LOVE to say. : )
A great what if question......... Had the JFK assassination had not happened would Poitier have won? As a result of the events of 11/22/63 the December release of DR STRANGELOVE was pushed back for 3 months - disqualifying it for the 1963 awards. Up against Peter Sellers, Poitier might not have been successful.
Sidney Poitier personifies talent, intelligence and class. He has deserved more than one Oscar for best performance of the year in his life time, but this one was and will always be the sweetest. You are a credit not only to your race but to mankind Mr. Poitier. God Bless.
Yeas, Anne does seem a little pretentious in her giddiness. But Sydney WAS really terrific in Lilies (it's my wife's favorite film of his) and upon his shoulders sat the dreams realized of many acting pioneers who came before him.
Anne Bancroft; missed her turn because this dedicated actress was on broadway, and working that night; she later did a fine film with Mr. Poiter,'The Slender Thread' a fine, and two Icons of Film and Broadway,Miss Anne Bancroft, its 6 years and people still talk about her.
Sidney Poitier richly deserved his Academy Award for "Lillies of the Field". Anne Bancroft was so gracious in presenting the Oscar to Mr. Poitier. Ms. Bancroft was one classy lady!
Many people have forgotten but 1:15 caused quite a stir at the time. Anne said she received hate mail and death threats for years after. She said the worst letters were the people who did not mind the kiss so much as Anne instigated it. She then said something that I don't think this site would print. Great lady!
Many people believe the first TV interracial kiss was Star Trek or Petula Clark/Harry Belafonte. But it was this one.
Anne Bancroft was gorgeous, and her reception of Poitier seemed so natural and unaffected, she was clearly thrilled for him to win. Great lady indeed, and two very talented thespians.
@direfranchement You can even see her saying to Poitier as they walk off the stage, "I'm so happy that you won!" I love her reaction to a well-deserved win.
@JerseySurvivor Actually there was one before that. In a 1964 movie (Star Trek was 1968) called 'One Potato, Two Potato' with Barbara Barrie and Bernie Hamilton. If you haven't seen this you should...great movie.
What a fine actor, it's just a shame there weren't even more oscar worthy roles for him in his future. And as an asides, Newman's role in Hud was one of his best...
@broadjumper1 I have to disagree. A Patch of Blue, In the Heat of the Night were all fine. As were many previous roles, like Something of Value and especially, the Defiant Ones. I think he and Tony Curtis should have won for that!
Bancroft's reaction, Poitier's giddy walk to the stage, the enthusiastic audience reaction, and his genuine laughter at the end of his speech makes this historic moment one of the best in Oscar history.
cant believe they gave this nigga an oscar

Sidney wins in 1964
Denzel wins in 2002
So, you're telling me that in 38 years, no other black actor in a leading role gave an oscar worthy performance?
My conclusion: the Academy, & Hollywood for that matter, are oh so very full of $%^&
